I'm still so upset they removed that from the anime. Bertholdt's motive aside from going home was to save Annie (all the way back in season 3) and he died not knowing if she was alive or not. It would of been a perfect ending to his story that ended abruptly, let's be honest, if his final action was to do the one thing he wasn't able to do in life, protect Annie like he wanted to like he did in the manga.
