This was an excellent interview. In 1993, I'm 15 and reading an article about Digable Planets at the Salina Free Library (once the wilderness in Wizard of Oz author Frank Baum's backyard). I had the cassette single in the cardboard sleeve for "Rebirth of Slick" and it was time to commit to the album. I saw Cee Know (Doodlebug) in 1999 with The Cosmic Funk Orchestra at a Syracuse venue. He was warm and welcoming as we conversed. A few years back I was in Philly and was able to catch a Shabazz Palaces set at a place called Boot and Saddle on Broad Street. The music was mindblowing; completely unique from Digable Planets, but in no way disappointing. Ishmael Butler gave me a handshake and a hug as it was ending, and told me to "Be safe out there" as I walked out onto Broad Then I had a ticket to see the reunited Planets, with a short list of other well-respected artists, but that was unfortunately cancelled. Finally my 45th birthday rolled around last week. I teach Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream to 8th graders, then drive 4+ hours to arrive at the Ardmore Music Hall in time for the Digable Planets' performance. It was an unbelievably great time. I was able to chill with Ladybug and Butterfly. It wlukd have to be one of my favorite birthdays ever. This interview is well done and I learned a lot from it. Congrats! Peace.
That's awesome my man, he is one of the greatest and really one of the greatest artists of at least my lifetime to make music. I unfortunately have never gotten a chance to see him in any of his groups, and my only problem with him, is a just wish i had more music from him 😆. I just started this interview, so not sure if he mentions the album he did under the name cherrywine that was between digable and shabazz, but always try to make sure fans of his work know about that album, because i rarely hear it mentioned and was amazing, as was the solo album, by fellow digable planet, ladybug mecca made, called "trip the light fantastic", which i thought was fantastic myself.
MPC in the back, I see you Ish. Add Ishmael Butler to that pantheon of legends for sure. Still inventive pushing the genre forward. Love it. “I’m Purple Tape Nate, seal a corny n@&&a’s fate, I pull up wearing diamonds at the Pearly Gates, told my n@&&a’s, I’m sorry that I’m laaaaaaaaaaaate 😎🔥🔥🔥
Damn I’ve been a digable fan since 93-94 and never knew Ish was from Seattle!!! Repped BKNY so hard too! All love and respect to the whole Digable Planets!!! Thank you for making two of the best hip hop albums ever. Two of my personal favorite albums til this day. Both albums have aged well because they are both timeless CLASSICS!!! Blowout Comb is the best an album could possibly be, no exaggeration. It is a true masterpiece. And the crazy part for me is that I was not really feeling DPs when they first came out. All I heard at first was Rebirth of Slick and it was blowing up so fast and seemed gimicky with the whole jazz rap theme, like some US3 biddy biddy bop type stuff lol respectfully! But when I did the knowledge to the whole album there was no denying that it was dope!!! Peace!
