@@LuizAlexPhoenix Oh man Hakim's channel. I guess a lot of us are watching similar channels, probably because we have shared values. Like Lindsay Ellis, Philosophy Tube, etc. They all collaborate and comment on each other's channels too.
not sure, i don't think Hbomb agrees as much with the message now. i think he is a lot more understanding when it comes to consumers and what they buy, and i don't think he's as critical of game companies as he is towards the system itself fueling it. could be wrong.
"...you wont miss the prettier water of the new fallout 4 which i guarantee you is in the works right now". Yep, he was right all along. Fallout 76 was a fallout 4 reskin, but shittier
You can’t even convince gamers to not partake in the micro-transactions they hate- convince them to stop buying games they think sound epic from trash publishers? I mean, I admire the effort- it would be great if the gamer community would start taking this stuff into consideration. But on the one hand you have the fact that gamers are like pack a day + smokers of a decade or krokadil addicts or something... They may hate it, they may be miserable, but they cannot help but keep going back to the thing that makes them miserable and is wearing them down day after day. And on the other hand, gamers are one of the least woke demographics. Again, I respect this effort to stage an intervention; most important causes for the left are severely uphill battles, and if we just decide not to fight them because they’re unlikely to succeed then the future will be very dark and hopeless indeed. And just like debating fascists or conservatives or right-libertarians, while you won’t be able to get through to most, it is still worth while if you get through to some... But ugh, based on /r/gaming and “gamer gate,” if you want to get most gamers’ ire up about these legitimate issues, you’d have to repackage this issue as being the fault of women, female games journalists, and Bethesda being a cucked PC radical left-wing SJW game developer owned by secret communists (like Google and Twitter LOL). They certainly have their priorities... That much cannot be denied. Their priorities are just dumb as hell and based on misinformation and a bandwagon of idiocy. Jokes aside though, I do think it’s worthwhile to inject some rationality and a genuine lefty perspective into the mix, rather than completely forfeit the discourse to the most reactionary elements (in the same way I want radical leftists to vote rather than letting the worst, most right-wing demographics be the ones who vote disproportionately and create the worst of all possible worlds within the existing system. I’ve been gaming since I was a wee little baby with an N64, so while I don’t really think of “gamer” as a significant part of my identity, I do poke fun affectionately. Naturally, not all gamers are reactionary 4chan Nazis and gamergaters... It’s just a disturbingly large share of the online community in gamer-oriented circles. Just like incels; just like people who are “anti-establishment” but just have a very confused idea of who is the establishment, what motivates them, and who is against them; gamers are s big demographic who we can hypothetically appeal to if we approach them the right way and appeal to them properly- people who, by and large, have a direct interest in anti-capitalist politics, or at least challenging corporate power in particular spheres (a principle which can then be generalized to their workplaces for instance). So much respect Hbomberguy- you’re doing the dirty work of crawling down into the frey- the gaping maw of the beast, the line of fire of gamer-chuds everywhere who will claim you’re only doing this to virtue signal because you think it’ll get you laid by... Someone, somehow? Because of course self-interest is the only possible thing to ever motivate anyone. Nobody has higher values, it’s literally all just indirect plays to get more for me... Lol. It’s no different from racists assuming “Everyone else must think the same things, but they’re just afraid to be honest about it, because PC police.” It’s just projection from people who want to assume that their ideological pathologies are normal and in some way admirable and there’s no reason to question them or change.
Fallout 3: “How dare speak ill of Bethesda!!!” Fallout 4: “Ok it was just ok but Bethesda is still a great company.” Fallout 76: “I’m here to sit and listen and take notes on all the ways you have been right and I have been wrong.”
Sorry to necro this, but you should see the amount of fanboyism over the wastelannders update. People are defending them and saying all criticism should stop because the update has made 76 a lot more like a fallout game. They're getting praise. For 'fixing' (making less shit) a game over a year after release.
@@Dedfaction Um... to be fair, they SHOULD be getting credit for fixing their game. They botched the release and it was trash at the time, but it's good that they put the work in to make it better. And it is. Fallout 76 is not an amazing game by any stretch, but it is worth $40 if you want to loot, craft, build, and level up with friends in the Fallout universe. I would prefer that games be released in a solid state, but I'm also open to games being patched and made better when that isn't the case due to publisher/investor demands for a quicker release. Otherwise, we wouldn't have Rainbow 6 Siege, Warframe, and countless other games. No one is saying criticism should stop, but credit should be given when due. If the devs put in a lot of work over the course of a year, I don't see the point in shitting on them for something that was out of their control in the first place.
@@usernamesareforidiot no, sorry that doesn't wash. If they'd out effort into making an expansion pack or dlc, fair enough. But they've out effort into attempting to fix the game. They've out effort into aspects of the game that should have been there from the start. If I seek you a car with no windscreen or bonnet, you're not going to say thank you when I get around to putting them on a year later. And the cherry on top, it's STILL buggy. Still. It's not acceptable and they've been getting away with it for years now.
@@Dedfaction They DID put effort into making an expansion pack. Hours of NPC quests, along with bug fixes and QOL improvements, for free. I don't disagree that they should've been there from the beginning, but I disagree that when someone does something right, we should tell them to go fuck themselves and they shouldn't have a career. Fuck Zenimax and Bethesda, but not the devs and their work. Your car analogy is terrible. Developers were working on this game. Their money daddy demanded the game be released before it was finished. EVERYONE was trashing Fallout 76 when it first released, and rightfully so. There's a reason people are turning around, and it's because they've improved the game and it's worth playing if you're into the genre.
@Reg Eric hopefully that's sarcasm, but he thought all the idiots who whined about Anita Sarkeesian were either triggered anti-SJWs or alt-right freaks using dog whistles, which they were. He's definitely not a gamergater
@@megamage911 you were an Angry Jack! youtube search "an autopsy on gamergate" and things might make more sense about how you were involved in gamergate. It's a 20-min video, and part of a longer series on the Angry Jack and what makes him tick, which is a great series, but that video is the one specifically relevant to the dudes who genuinely believed the ethics story and their relationship to the dudes who just wanted to harass women. (Also, you said "identified" past tense, so I'm going to hope that you won't take the series' analysis as personal attacks.)
Growing up, my parents always made me think about whether I really wanted to have something before I was allowed to buy it, and would often read the reviews of the product (usually a video game) to me before they entered any payment details. To this day, I always wait at least a few weeks after a game's release and check the reviews before deciding to buy it, and the only game I ever pre-ordered was an HD remaster of a game I already liked. As a result, I've made sure that every game I own is at least of decent quality, and I don't regret buying any of them.
@@LordOfLemon I wonder what the HD remaster he talked about was...As for my experience with them: RE1 and RE0 got very good ones, Spyro is great (never played the original though) and Okami HD has become one of my favorite games ever so there are definitely good ones out there. To be fair, I haven't bothered with many remasters and all those mentions (Spyro excluded) were originally platform-exclusive for a platform I did not own and their remasters were thankfully released without such restrictions. A good rule is to never fully trust a new release. That's a bit disappointing now :/
My son has made me proud. I don't mind waiting 12 months to get the game on sale or used. It's rubbed off on my son. Even when he has the option he'd rather buy a crap load of games on sale. I had to literally argue him into paying £15 for Nier Automata.
My first exposure to you was a few months ago, UA-cam suggested your 90 minute Fallout 3 video. My initial reaction was "why would I watch a goddamn NINETY MINUTE video about a guy trashing a game I love?" FO3 was my first introduction to the series and I spent 125 hours loving it. But now, after randomly coming across another video of yours (Flat Earth) and falling in love with your style, I watched that video, and damn if you weren't right about everything. I guess my point is, you can enjoy things and still find a lot of valid criticism about them. And understanding those perspectives is only going to help things be better in the future. I might still be able to turn my brain off and enjoy the current equivalent of FO3, but if there's even the slightest chance that I might be able to discern when a game could have been a lot better, I'm going to consider my life improved for it. Thanks for all your hard work, and keep it up!
Feels my dude. UA-cam was throwing the FO3 retrospective at me for weeks and I avoided it as it was my introduction to the series too (after which I bought the first two in a Steam bundle). When I eventually watched it I found myself nodding along, even remembering those moments during my first playthrough when I found myself thinking... "Wat? This shit makes no sense". The thing is, I will play it again, and I'll enjoy playing it. But the next playthrough will be modded right out and basically ignoring the main quest, discovering all the cool side quests and NPC encounters that I missed the first time because I was running back and forth across capital wasteland looking for the guy that the actual story was happening to. It's going to be great, and I have Harris to thank for that. :)
Fallout 1: Find water Fallout 2: Find a GECK to save your village Fallout 3: Find your dad and use a GECK to bring water to the wastes Fallout New Vegas: Find the guy who shot you Fallout 4: Finding Nemo, but with humans Fallout 76: Find your refund
The "buy little games that seem weird and are cheap" is actually my favourite bit of advice i've ever received - I recently bought heart and slash on a whim and aside from crashing every two minutes and the outside sections looking just like hot voxel garbage its actually really cute and quirky, I really had fun with it and it was nice to play a game that was more than just a product; something that felt like a passion project.
“Don’t support developers who do bad business practices” Me, looking at months-long 6-day-week “crunch time” enforcers CD Projekt Red: 👀 EDIT: Me, looking at how shit C2077 turned out: 🐸☕️
thats not even bringing up the fact that hbomb mentions how bethesda stunted the reviews of skyrim SE by calling out the exact same things cdpr did to c2077
All these companies are trash lol even the indie scene is turning into trash with developers getting greedy and shoving 69 useless dlc that add nothing to core game.
@@jasper_the_ghost But Bethesda also doesn‘t overpromise on stories. They never claim to have great stories. While CDPR did claim to have an amazing story and only delivered a decent one.
yeah, there is that problem. And the games industry works very hard to encourage its consumers to never, ever grow up or mature in the way they think about their games. Games cannot be art as long as consumers aren't willing to also be critics.
Or at least reverse engineer consumerism so we're not just getting spigotted by publishers/shareholders/late capitalist structures - we're actively controlling the tap. We collectively need to agree that *we say when* they get to take our £40.
At least the corporation controlling Deus Ex is doing better with it- *trips and falls over a hundred NPCs awkwardly calling fears of robot genocide "racist"*
Go Buy Wasteland 2! The sequel to the original inspiration for the fallout series. DO IT NOW, or you will regret not having experienced it in all of it's isometric glory.
Ways to fix the games industry that Hbomb couldn't tell you but he actually meant Step 1: Pirate games from companies you don't like. Step 2: Support Devs that give power to their workers Step 3: End capitalism :)
I'd honestly say don't pirate games from companies you don't like. It's not just about spending your money carefully, but also your time imo. Spend that time, like hbomb mentioned, looking into smaller indie projects that get no love. You might find the next Undertale, Superhot, Stardew Valley etc etc and that's much more valuable than wasting your time grinding in whatever AAA garbage you pirated
Piracy sends the wrong message to these companies. Instead of "there's no place for practices like this in the games industry," it's "these people like what we're doing, they just don't want to pay for it."
This is such a bizarre watch after the 2019 E3 conference, it feels like such a prediction of how Bethesda's shitty attitude would continue until they literally paid other people to cheer for them,
I would say the developers unionize and send the publishers to the gulags, but I guess this will have to do for now. I actually would like to say something serious though. I will have to admit I'm a bit skeptical on whether or not refraining from buying video games from bad companies will ultimately change anything. Not saying there isn't a possibility, but my problem is more along the lines of whether or not people on a mass scale will be willing to do so instead of a few people looking for a chance to stroke their egos.
Developers and many employees in the game industry need to form strong, vast and outreaching unions to avoid getting the worst the industry has to offer.
I was thinking the same thing. Developers unionizing would help a bunch, although it would have to be at a massive scale in order to change anything. Plus, most computer programmers are part of the libertarian crowd, so I wonder if that would get in the way of unionizing.
@@FarhadHakimov Well... Before 76 it was more like: "Aw, look at the guys with the bugs and horse armor, aren't they adorably silly?" After 76 it was: "This is trash."
On the one hand, I feel good that I have almost entirely stopped backing the Triple-A gaming industry in favor of indie PC games. On the other hand, I feel bad for acting like I actually make a difference.
@@ninjagirl889 While I _might_ lightly disagree because too many people think it's okay to stop at "feeling good" (myself included), I still want to thank you. Not only for typing a nice comment in response to mine, but for reminding me about this video. Ironically, I just pre-ordered my first video game, for what I feel are reasons hbomberguy might still approve of: the Untitled Goose Game Lovely Edition that's made out of 100% post-consumer materials (and thus fully recyclable as well). It was a game I already played and highly enjoyed, made by a very small (indie) team, and they obviously put a lot of thought and effort into making this be as impactful as possible (or, to put another way, how to impart the least impact on the environment).
drops, waterfalls, apes together strong. sure, on our own, we're not doing much, but if millions of people do what they can, that is absolutely making a difference. and honestly, it might be idealistic but I believe that it even if it were just you, that one person choosing better is making a different
I respect your willingness to call out youtubers on their crap, especially when they have legions of psycho fans who might attempt to ruin your life over a "Far Cry" Commercial. You have integrity. I respect that.
There's nothing inherently wrong with the youtubers who just really enjoy a company's product and make videos about how excited they are about them. They'd likely make extremely similar videos even without sponsorship. The issue is companies sending those enthusiasts advance copies, paying them, and not letting anyone else who might have a negative view anywhere near the game. Of course there's definitely a conflict of interest factor once the youtubers realize that next time they might not get money or advance copies if they point out something bad about the game, but that doesn't make them villainous, it just means they realize they're sort of trapped between revenue and ethics.
Lurdiak saying "they would have made it anyway" is a lame excuse most of the time. JonTron never makes videos like that just because he wants to and even if he did make it himself, he most likely would not have made it the same way as when the publisher is paying them for good press.
I guess there's also nothing wrong with a journalist or blogger who uncritically parrots the party line of the government for cash, if they were already probably going to shill anyway. Look - it falls upon each of us to behave ethically, and to not let ourselves be used as tools, to what extent we can, by an uncaring, monstrous system. These people are letting themselves be used, whether they realize it or not. The best outcome is that one or two would-be shills accidentally stumble on this video and realize they can make another choice.
The worst part is that there were aspects of GamerGate that had some legitimate concerns about the status of ethics within gaming journalism. The problem is it was all drowned out by people who wanted to make the issue about their own sexist philosophies.
Jugal the very notion of social justice gets some people in a Witch Hunt sort of mood. I just don't ignore it because we happen to share the same end goal. I've been ostracized and called an explainer and apologist simply for saying "this isn't the right way to pursue the goal of diversity." There are often nuggets of truths behind stereotypes. Overly aggressive and zealous snowflake cry bullies are the truth behind the "SJW" stereotype, and it drags everyone down just as much as the "I'm such a nice guy, why won't these sluts fuck me" MRA. Long argument made short: GG was a joke, and the arguments held therein would've been much more effective from someone else, but we're equally guilty of going too far at times

2 years later, still a great list. It's a shame that Squad won't be making KSP2. Not gonna lie though, I'm probably going to break my self-imposed rule and preorder it even though the franchise is now owned by Take Two. The Star Theory dev team sounds really dedicated to making a worthy sequel, the concept/features sound amazing. I just hope they can keep it isolated from too much TTI fuckery. Also really keen to see what Justin and Matthew at Subset Games do next, I loved FTL and Into The Breach.

-sob- I feel so bad seeing Clare here because she’s such a sweetheart that doesn’t know better. She just genuinely loves playing games and avoids drama
I hate peoples that "wants to avoid drama"... I understand them, it's very demanding to stay critic about what you love, but I still think this is unhealthy behaviour. I try not to be rude to them anyway, they choosed to avoid harsh feelings so I wont put my WoKeNeSs down their throat, but that's still a missed opportunity to be a better consumer for them. I don't like being profited from, so I really don't understand how peoples are still willing to be used like that, but forcing people to change usually doesn't work, you have to be more subtle, almost manipulative, and I don't like to do that. (also I'm not suble, as seen with the begining of my comment haha...)
I agree! For me, 1 is watchable crap, with some genuinely excellent choreography in the Darth Maul fight, 3 is interesting to a degree with Palpantine's scheming and the destruction of the Jedi, and 2... 2 is just terrible. That's also my order for the Star Wars prequels - 1, 3, 2. (Overall, I'd rank them 5, 4, 7, 6, 1, 3, 2) Still, even though I'd disagree they were any good, I'd love to hear why he likes them!
I liked them A LOT as a kid, but as I've grown I've woken up to how bad they are. I still think they had some good scenes and introduced some good things to the universe as a whole that ended up being great in the EU. I think they're still watchable, though. My overall ranking for the films would have to be 5, 4, 6, 7, 3, 2, 1 (with 1 and 2 being extremely close.)
Honestly with Hbomb's sense of humour and sensibilities it would probably be just a slightly less uncomfortable but more British version of Mr Plinkett's prequel reviews.
Friendly reminder that this video is 7 years old. Friendly reminder that this video came out before Starfield and Fallout 76. Friendly reminder that Bethesda will never change. Friendly reminder to give up hope for TESVI.
And then when someone pointed out maybe that wasn't a pro move he had himself a little baby cry about how everyone thinks he's the worst person in the world for giving an interview.
Can you do a video where you explain why you like the _Star Wars_ prequels, please? I even italicised the series title in this comment because I am keen to see that.
Thanks, guy(s) - if we can get this comment thumbs'd-upped to _one hundred_ thumbs-ups, I might even *embolden* (which should be the verb for that) some of my next comment.
kitredKitredson So lets start from the begining. Episode 1 I was seven years old in 1999 so it was obvious I would like kid friendly film. I was suprised how different movie it was from the originals. From the first moment there was much more melancholy and then... lightsabers... it's star wars!!! But years later the first scene makes me wonder. How would survive such warrior monks in huge civilisation? Seeing them as major players in galactic diplomacy is something fresh. But now the reaction from trade federation. Far more interesting. They are scared!!! People we used to know as merciful are seen as scary. There is tons of forshadowing here. It shows that Jedi without the evil on contrast are seen as powerful mindbenders and tough opponents. No wonder trade federation is scared. They think republic has send someone to crush their minds or murder them. Not very jedi way huh? Another fun fact. Battle droids are seen with much more respect here than Stormtroopers in the future (especially Rogue One). They make their job done without much problem... Unless this problem are jedi but this is is how it was showed awesomeness of trained body and mind. Here's the something I would like to change. I wish Padme Amidala was main hero just to make whole movie her story arc of the guilt which supports her actions in future films. She's belived to be guilty of starting war with Trade Federation so seeing young girl feeling terrible for fate of other citizens of Naboo is heartwarming but later when we know that she belives she is responsible for all those bad things that happend here. Also interesting fact young Anakin is far better written than his son Luke when he was farmer on Tatooine. Anakin is a dreamer, he works hard and looks forward to better future in the world which seems forgotten by "good guys". He's the only person who makes fantasy speeches in this movie. All Jedi are staying hard on the ground with Qui-Gon being master negotiator and Obi-Wan being just a student who looks at thing in very stricked way. There are many YT videos which can explain why anakin should be trained by Qui-Gon but I'm gonna say this; if Qui-Gon has seen Anakin having trouble with his emotions because of other gender... I could imagine him taking Anakin on the mission to strip bar :D. So yes. Anakin. Person who turned Jedi into fantasy warriors who always shows up to save the day. Just like many of us imagined Jedi... however reality is harsh. Jedi Council avoids thinking in the same way. Soon they turned wonderus boy Anakin to another of their kind... and the whole trilogy tells the story of sturggle if anything Jedi did was really good. End of chapter one.
anyone else fucking love this channel? he is one of the most insightful and critical UA-camrs currently active and to top it off, you're honest. keep up the good work.
I think his arguments are consistently good and his humour is on point, but he can come across as quite condescending at times and I personally think he holds most things to a very high standard. Most forms of entertainment have deep flaws. This doesn't necessarily make them worthless. I don't think he believes that either, but at times that is the impression I get.
are yall implying he made a video about fallout 4? or that he's made indication that he's definitely not going to? bc i haven't seen anything either way
To be honest...there aren't any core points he made towards FO3 that can't be applied to FO4. Not saying I don't want to see him tear FO4 apart, but at least for the time being we can just....pretend...
I think it's time to address the elephant in the room Hbomberguy. We're going to need another hour long video on why THE HELL YOU LIKE THE STAR WARS PREQUELS !?
The basic premise of a peaceful, democratic, liberal civilisation falling into a fascist state due partly to the arrogant, elitist and ignorant bureaucracy draws some interesting parallels. Just a pity the films are terribly made.
Oh man... Star Wars prequels is much more dangerous topic than PC culture and 2016 in general... I don't call prequels good movies (all 4 of them) but there are things which I enjoy. It is hard to blame movie for raping someone imagination like some people does. It's kinda wierd that people love to blame wrong things... like Mass Effect 3 ending to the game which was mostly bad shooter.
I don't get why people dickride The Force Awakens so hard, it was basically just a rehash of A New Hope, just with better special effects and worse writing.
Just freaking pirate it to demo it. If it's actually good and worth your money THEN buy it. Lots of people freak the hell out at the mere mention of piracy but pirated content is probably how the majority of the world experiences content, because the majority of the world does not have enough money to be willing to spend it on things that they might end up not liking.
Voting with your wallet is a great way to tell these developers who keep releasing the same bull how you feel. They dont care about your words, they care about how much money they get.
The problem with "voting with your wallet" is that companies can't ask *why* you choose not to buy their product. They may assume RPGs just aren't popular anymore, or that political themes are a turn off for gamers, or that single player games are dead and everyone wants Fortnite, or that the market is tanking and people don't have money to spend on video games on the whole. Not buying a video game teaches the company nothing they can use to improve their practices.
@@LadyDoomsinger I mean, I find the video a bit too overly optimistic, and there are fundamental problems with "voting with your wallet", but wouldn't everyone being a critic, and voicing why they're not buying these games prevent this?
@@zephyr6927 Not when they can just up the marketing budget, implement gambling mechanics, or just run with IPs proven to make a ton of cash regardless of quality.
Nah, I never bought Fallout 4. Watching somebody else play it for a couple of hours was more than enough to see they've gone even further down the more action less RPG route.
Unless they develop something themselves that isn't a bug filled mess that's greatest feature is how much pointless side shit there is to do, I don't think I will.
Heck, even those things that they don't develop are bug filled because Zenimax fucks over the small dev teams and buys them afterwards. It happened before and it almost happened to Obsidian, that's why they had to crowd found for their next game.
Probably the wrong video to make this comment on, but IMO there's a gap between "fun" and "good" in context of video games(or anything now that I think about it). Using Skyrim's broken as shit stealth skill to sneak around and pick people off one by one is extremely "fun", but I think it's garbage game design. In contrast, your Bloodborne video mentions that a lot of people didn't have fun with the souls games, despite them being good games. Obviously the best games will be widely praised as "fun" and "good", but companies like Bethesda will continue to be popular and successful due to their cocktease design philosophy of "lets make a game that's like 8 small changes away from being fucking amazing". Honestly though, I don't think any of what I just said matters in the slightest, since we don't have unified terms for talking about games, so "fun" might be a criteria for what some people consider to be "good" and vice versa.
This is exactly what Gamergate was about as well. People giving favours to others as a "gift" and expecting a favorable return. It can be between indie devs and "journalists" and between huge AAA companies and youtube creators. It's the same principle of conflicts of interest.
Except this time, we're not going to pull up bullshit lies and slander about some random woman. There was zero evidence she got anything in return after dating a games journalist, her game wasn't reviewed or promoted by him or anyone from Kotaku. It was bullshit, malicious slander against women and feminists in specific and you know it.
Ethical consumption won't save capitalism from its short comings. This goes for important shit like child and slave labor and petty stuff like video games.
Use the model of a Social Economy, As practised in Rojava, as well as elements of central planning to allocate resources to those who need them most, rather than a "free market" where bread rots and people starve.
If your response to "we don't know how to deal with child and slave labour", things that Western high street brands still indirectly use, is "but cheap goods", there's some serious moral problems you have there.
The indie games market on steam is a pretty spooky thing. If you want to see what a flooded market looks like, go on steamspy and look at a list of indie games, and their sales figures. Youll find a large number of really nice, well made games by tiny teams of passionate folks with less than a thousand sales after months and months of release. Making indie games nowadays is a big gamble, and the bigger the game, the bigger the gamble. Even if you do everything right, if you dont have an existing fanbase core to launch the word of mouth and excitement, there is a big risk your game goes unnoticed, and your months and months of work get you nothing more than a few weeks' worth of salary. To many smaller devs who want to remain independent, things like Patreon might become a necessary safety net they just cant go without.
The fact I get so much hate for saying how disappointing Starfield is just shows just how well Bethesda have done at convincing people they put out great games. And I say this as someone who is STILL playing Fallout 4, though heavily modded.
I take it one step further and won't buy any game with microtransactions in it. This means every single EA game with Ultimate Team or anything like it. I really wanted to play EA UFC 3, but the presence of Ultimate Team meant I never bought it, and never will. Hell, I still haven't even bought Overwatch because of the loot boxes ("BUT IT'S JUST COSMETIC!" Don't care. Costumes are part of the reward loop. I'd rather just buy costumes I want like in Street Fighter instead of opening boxes and hoping I get the one I want.) I do play some f2p mobile games, but I don't feel as bad because I didn't spend $60 to start the game first.
Hey there. Not to be needy, but when you make a list of things (like reviewers you like) could you put them in the description, so we dont have to interurpt the video with pausing and finding a pen? That would help us to follow your serial recommendations more quickly and ultimately make them more effective.
he means the website www.actionbutton.net, which has a lot of great reviews that differ a lot from other mainstream opinions. However, the site is currently down, and has been for a while due to unknown reasons, though it's most likely unintentional since the site founder Tim Rogers was surprised one day to find it down. He plans to fix and revive the website in a big way but right now his current life for the past few years (working on Videoball and being a video producer at Kotaku) has kept him too busy from doing so. You can still find all those great reviews if you use the Wayback Machine, however. I'd highly recommend doing so.
Relying on gamers to make smart decisions is never going to work. These are the same people when discovering Konami's mistreatment of Kojima decided to make a big boycott of their products... except for Phantom Pain because dat shit look tight yo.

I think somebody needs to put together a list of all of the "Bethesda approved critics" so that we can collectively decide to ignore them. If I was a youtuber and was given a Bethesda game early I would be incredibly ashamed of myself after learning this.
And as it always seems to be, the SJW Spenglers are the ones actually concerned about ethics in video game journalism, not just how big some virtual tiddies are. I like how while criticizing the practise of big companies only letting big-name fans on UA-cam who will only say nice things play their games, you don't yell at the UA-camrs themselves who are probably just legitimately excited to be playing a game they like early. And also in the interest of promoting Indie devs, Shrouded in Sanity is a really good game I played this year. It's one of those 'It's like Dark Souls but-' games but with lots of weird unexplained horror and clear influence from Silent Hill, the first Resident Evil, and Eternal Darkness. It has an extremely challenging difficulty curve but the gameplay is rewarding and it's on sale for £2.79 right now.
I was always shocked that Bethesda “made” the recent doom games. I didn’t know they were just publishing and didn’t develop it themselves. That makes sooooo much more sense
im watching this years later, obviously. ive been binge watching your content and loving it. that being said, i find it funny how absolutely correct your points are. with the release of fallout 76 coming out, and now watching your video, and its laughable seeing the obviously targeted press releases bethesda has concentrated on since its announcement. though its still rampant. it is nice seeing the backlash that has been coming from the community. the blatant extreme capitalism within the industry is as bad as ever, but it is nice to see the outrage from the community. its only unfortunate that people, if they want to play these games, still have to (in a sense) support the company by buying the games.
If anyone is reading this in the future PLEASE NEVER PRE-ORDER ANY GAMES, EVER, YOU’RE DISINCENTIVISING PUBLISHERS RELEASING A GOOD/FINISHED GAME! YOU CAN WAIT A FEW MORE WEEKS TO PLAY A GAME, PLUS IT WILL BE CHEAPER AND HOPEFULLY PATCHED! Phew, I do miss the days of it being a multi-million dollar logistical nightmare to update a game, sure helped the publishers stay honest with making sure their bugs were squished before release.
The best way to solve the problem: Stop buying games day 1. It's OK to buy a game later. Like even day 5. Or day 9. Or even 2 years later, it's OK if you do. Let the people who like wasting their money on bad games continue to do so. You can't stop them anyhow. And then you have plenty of time to find out if the game is good or not, from critics and users alike. Even if it's good, you might even get a discount, or avoid problems (like bugs that get fixed), by getting it later. Problem solved. Maybe goes for lots of other products, too.

Thank you, you have touched upon the aspect pundits so often neglect when defining problems with games industry: consumers. Publishers/developers get away with underhanded practices because people with their wallets are saying: it's ok.
I haven't purchased a game from a major developer in ages. All my games are from indy developers. My current favorites are "The Forest", and "Sir You are Being Hunted" (I REALLY recommend those games. Check them out!) and "Minecraft" is something that's been on my computer since it's early beta days and I've never gotten bored of it and still play it regularly with my friends and family.
I have Terraria. I actually don't really enjoy it. I think it's the fact that it feels kind of like a "side scrolling platformer" and I don't really enjoy side scrolling platformers. I know it's a sandbox game, but I've tried and I just can't get into it. The mechanics of it aren't something I enjoy.
I play "Sir" quite often and I always customize the hell out of the terrain and the bots because that makes for a lot of fun and interesting features. It's one of those games that I just keep coming back to that will probably never leave my hard drive. It's one of those games that I feel gets everything right that I want in a game. I think that this game is a gem that not enough people are aware of.

Fallout 3 should have the same thing fallout 4 and fallout 4 should be this game was boring but atleast it wasn't horrible

In hindsight, even HD remasters can't be trusted nowadays. Look at what they've done to Warcraft 3. Look at my poor boy! ;-;
Your parents taught you a real good habit, wow.

Ways to fix the games industry that Hbomb couldn't tell you but he actually meant
Step 1: Pirate games from companies you don't like.
Step 2: Support Devs that give power to their workers
Step 3: End capitalism :)
You know the last place I thought I'd see this decade lead to is pirate communists, but
YARR ME COMRADE I BE UP FOR IT
I'd honestly say don't pirate games from companies you don't like.
Step 2 should be the only step...
telling people to be more discerning in how they spend their money is the exact opposite of ending capitalism

Did you just unironically compare enthusiast press to state run media?
We do live in a corporate oligarchy. Uncritically spouting the sales line kind of is like touting the party line.
So basically: if we want games to be treated like art, we have to treat them like art

Finally some talking about real ethics in the game industry , btw i'm sure you'll like super bunny hop
The worst part is that there were aspects of GamerGate that had some legitimate concerns about the status of ethics within gaming journalism. The problem is it was all drowned out by people who wanted to make the issue about their own sexist philosophies.
Dakota Gillmore You don't join a witch hunt if you really want to fight for social justice.
Jugal the very notion of social justice gets some people in a Witch Hunt sort of mood. I just don't ignore it because we happen to share the same end goal. I've been ostracized and called an explainer and apologist simply for saying "this isn't the right way to pursue the goal of diversity."
There are often nuggets of truths behind stereotypes.

Also really keen to see what Justin and Matthew at Subset Games do next, I loved FTL and Into The Breach.
no Toby fox ? And there's a lot of missing comas, not great to know if I'm reading just a long game title or if it's actually two or three games. Please use ponctuation in your youtube comments, that the single most missused thing down here and it needs to stop.
Pixel Pushers Union 512 made Tonight We Riot, one of the few overtly leftist games I've played
Colestia makes some amazing games too, like They Came From A Communist Planet, A Bewitching Revolution, and POST/CAPITALISM and a lot more, their games are a great educational resource while also being a lot of fun to play
Yai Gameworks- My Hole is a Mouth of Dirt (played this recently, very punchy and unique and affecting experience), Red Haze

Hey past future man. Bethesda is still pretty trash.
Hello past future peoplez, Bethesda's officially obsolete and Obsidian took its place like it should've a long time ago.
I really want to see a prequels video from Hbomb.
(Overall, I'd rank them 5, 4, 7, 6, 1, 3, 2)
Still, even though I'd disagree they were any good, I'd love to hear why he likes them!
Me too! I really don't like them but I would love to see his take on them. If anyone could make a good case for them i think it's hbomb.
Honestly with Hbomb's sense of humour and sensibilities it would probably be just a slightly less uncomfortable but more British version of Mr Plinkett's prequel reviews.
Not to mention the kinda racist stereotypes characterized by Watto and Gungans. Wonder how he got around that one.

Yes: please do; it's always nice to hear opinions on art.
kitredKitredson So lets start from the begining.
Episode 1
I was seven years old in 1999 so it was obvious I would like kid friendly film.
He tried to warn them.
But they didn't listen

No one listened to hbomberguy, and we got Starfield.
So an appreciation for fan wank over quality which stands for itself, got it.
Nope, I think you just don't understand the concept of fan wank and independent quality.
Just freaking pirate it to demo it. If it's actually good and worth your money THEN buy it.
Lots of people freak the hell out at the mere mention of piracy but pirated content is probably how the majority of the world experiences content, because the majority of the world does not have enough money to be willing to spend it on things that they might end up not liking.
i freak out at the mention of piracy because im really bad at it and my last computer died from tor
@@zephyr6927 Only if you assume game companies are actually in touch with/listens to/cares about their player base.
@@LadyDoomsinger Yeah they would be? Companies put making money first, so why wouldn't they find out why they're losing money?
@@zephyr6927 Not when they can just up the marketing budget, implement gambling mechanics, or just run with IPs proven to make a ton of cash regardless of quality.
Bethesda is full of shit, I lost what little respect I had for them now.
The man with the baby hands but I guarantee you that you'll buy their next game
Nah, I never bought Fallout 4. Watching somebody else play it for a couple of hours was more than enough to see they've gone even further down the more action less RPG route.
Unless they develop something themselves that isn't a bug filled mess that's greatest feature is how much pointless side shit there is to do, I don't think I will.
Heck, even those things that they don't develop are bug filled because Zenimax fucks over the small dev teams and buys them afterwards.
It happened before and it almost happened to Obsidian, that's why they had to crowd found for their next game.
After what they did to obsidian i don't why people would like them , i know it was their parent company but still
Probably the wrong video to make this comment on, but IMO there's a gap between "fun" and "good" in context of video games(or anything now that I think about it).
The amusement in watching this in 2018 with the fallout 76 launch reviews and criticisms.
Ethics in game journalism
Dnt Wry ethics in game capitalism
Ethics in late-capitalist media production
dan _ No ethical consumption under capitalism.
Meep-Meh H&M and Primark are great because they're really cheap.
or we could not save capitalism at all. lets face it, capitalism is dying and we should help push it over the edge.
And replace it with what? Everyone rants about wanting change, but they also want cheap goods.
Starfield… Todd learned nothing.

Then become paranoid that people are following you for being a bad person and get into a fight trying to live with your shit life.
To many smaller devs who want to remain independent, things like Patreon might become a necessary safety net they just cant go without.

no we need to force people to not buy EA games.
Or rather, become a billionaire and buy EA Games. And take a hammer and shatter it into the million good pieces it always needed to be.
I'd rather just buy costumes I want like in Street Fighter instead of opening boxes and hoping I get the one I want.) that quick list of reviewers they are: MrBtongue, shaymay, waypoint, joseph Anderson, giant bomb, and, jimquisition.
he means the website www.actionbutton.net, which has a lot of great reviews that differ a lot from other mainstream opinions.

Okay, I just have to ask...what IS a Spengler? Is it related to Egon (who was my second favorite Ghostbuster behind Ray)? What does it mean?

im watching this years later, obviously. ive been binge watching your content and loving it. that being said, i find it funny how absolutely correct your points are. with the release of fallout 76 coming out, and now watching your video, and its laughable seeing the obviously targeted press releases bethesda has concentrated on since its announcement. though its still rampant. it is nice seeing the backlash that has been coming from the community. the blatant extreme capitalism within the industry is as bad as ever, but it is nice to see the outrage from the community. its only unfortunate that people, if they want to play these games, still have to (in a sense) support the company by buying the games.
I just pre-orderer new assaianr creeep
It’s interesting watching this nearly 6 years after you made it. Perfect video.
This certainly is a strange video to be watching right now
Still relevant, even more so today.

BlackburnBigdragon You should check out Terraria if you havent heard of it. Its a wonderful game thats only 10 dollars!
BlackburnBigdragon ah, well to each his own. Have you tried Subnautica? Its pretty awesome too.
Literally no one plays Sir, you are Being Hunted and it's one of those games that I just turn and play when I want to do something I know I'll enjoy.
"If more of us are less like this because we think about this stuff and try and communicate about it with each other effectively. Everything can and will get better." This just the second of your videos I've seen so far but I think I might have just fallen in love.
Things you should also for game improvement:
- Support unionization of game devs related workers.
- demand regulation of consumer support for digital midia/ games
-also against crunch.
Veganism shows that no amount of individual responsibility is capable of changing a systemic problem, it's just so you feel okay
I love how us SJW's do a better job pointing out the bad business practices of the games industry than FUCKING GAMERGATE!
We have to do everything around here
Almost as if it had nothing to do with ethics at all
Funny that
tz64nk41 To Gamergaters, "ethics" means "Keep feminists away from my vidya games!!!!!"
and not only feminist but also people with other cultures or tones of skin. i always like to think that gamersgaters were just a lousy minority but when the champion of 4chan is the next president, well... i wish i have something constructive to say, but i don't u.u
Got any evidence of hbomberguy being an SJW besides retards in the comment section calling him one and you being one and wanting some credit by association?
That plug for Joseph Anderson! His video on The Witness was a masterpiece
A slog? At 23 minutes? Hbomb, if only he coudl see his future
"Harris Bomberguy"? Historical reference, maybe?
Tom McDonald i think his first name is actually Harris. i'd be interested in what historical moment he could be referencing though :)
dan _ In WWII, the head of British Bomber Command, in charge of the bombing campaign over Europe, was Sir Arthur Harris. He was a big proponent of all-out bombing of Germany, including civilian targets--or at least with no regard for civilian casualties. He was given the nickname of Bomber Harris. Bomber Harris/Harris Bomber. :-) But Hbomberguy's real first name may well be Harris.
Tom McDonald ahh, that'd be very clever.
Not really. All it will result in is some nasty Ad Homeniem quip in the upcoming Sargon video.
Lol jks, hes not brave enough after the logical trashing he got
LostStudent muh ad hominem
There's only one solution to this problem:
*S M A S H C A P I T A L I S M*
HELICOPTER MICRSOFT’S BASE TO *SIBERIA*
Dude, the more I watch your videos the more hooked on your channel I get. You have a great perspective on things, please don't stop making this great content!
But seriously, do you really like the Star Wars Prequels? I won't judge.
He does, I've seen him post about it on a movie forum.
It's so embarrassing.
He likes the prequels, he hates Evangelion.
You make it hard for me to love you, Harris Bomberguy.
It's sad. If George Lucas made the Prequels right they would have far surpassed the Originals. Sadly he didn't.
No I meant Lucas writing a better script too so we could tell Anakin's and Palpatine's Arcs better.
If I'm remembering right he made the prequels after his divorce and I remember in interviews and stuff his wife would call him out on the weird stuff he would try to do. Like maybe not have almost every scene filmed on a green screen.
