  • This is my review of the Antop AT-400B Big Boy Antenna. It claims to have have up to 80 miles of range. Features include a low profile design, 4G LTE filter, and smart pass amplifier but how well does it pick up VHF and UHF TV frequencies?

    I liked the video. I have the AT-400BV now for two years and it seems to work well. Could you make a read-only spreadsheet on *_Google Sheets_* and add your current and future antennas tests on the worksheet? You can add a link to the worksheet in your video descriptions. It would make it much easier for all of us who want to shop for a new antenna.

    This video finally clued me in that the channels I'm always having an issue picking up are VHF broadcasts, and none of my antennas have a VHF element - amazing how all these manufacturer websites and guides gloss over that bit. Thanks!

    Thanks for calling out the antenna manufacturers. You think they'd know. As a Ham radio operator, I know you have to have the correct antenna for a specific band. Sometimes the wrong antenna will receive, but atmospheric conditions determine how well.

    I agree with you about the VHF problem with antennas today. I had a VHF only antenna from the analog days and really wish I hadn't got rid of it. But I see there are alternatives by buying a little larger VHF/UHF antenna such as the channel master you had mentioned,and a few other models but most definitely,antenna manufacturers should be paying more attention to the VHF frequencies especially if you buy an antenna such as the high end clearstream outdoor antenna that only has one element and is designed,at least for the VHF side of it, for higher VHF frequencies only.

    Love your content and agree 100% with your advice to manufacturers. What antenna do you recommend for those of us living in a metropolitan area? I have many stations in the area, but some are in the VHF range. I prefer the flat types, since they're easy to keep out of the way, but I do want to get the most out of them when I'm using them.

    I agree 100% with the idea that antenna manufacturers MUST be clear that an antenna does or does not receive BOTH UHF and VHF signals.
    I will admit that I have never checked on the internet to find out exactly which channels are broadcasting in my area, but having tried 3 different antennas, and looking at the list of channels when I scan them for reception...it is obvious that I am only able to get UHF. If I still lived within 10-20 miles of tv stations I know from experience that I would get both bands, but then again, most VHF signals can be received with just a coat hanger.
    BTW, I know you live near the Scranton and W-B area, from past reviews, but it is great to hear from a (former) "neighbor"....as I am originally from Bradford County and get the stations you receive, though by necessity with cable.

      That circle was probably a loop UHF antenna, very basic, will get close-by strong UHF signals. Then there is the bowtie shaped UHF antenna, a step above the loop. If close enough, a UHF antenna will pick up strong VHF signals and vice versa aka better than no antenna for the band it wasn't designed for. As far as the 2 wires, would need more info. If you connected a wire or 2 wires to the screw type VHF terminals, the wire(s) would act as a simple antenna.

      It depends. Being that distance you may want a slightly larger antenna. This is one of the smaller low VHF capable antennas about the same size as the ClearStream models minus the large VHF element. I can send you some others if you are looking for a larger model. amzn.to/2mf7TGs

    I suspect that in 90% of the markets there is at least one station still broadcasting in the VHF band. Looking forward to your review on the big Channelmaster antenna, from the looks of it I think that one would fall into the "deep fringe reception" category. AND it is fully VHF capable.
    Something that you might have tried with this one is rotate it 90 degrees so the long axis is horizontal. Remember that TV broadcast signals are horizontally polarized, so that's the way you want your elements oriented.

    Last year I bought the ANTOP Paper Thin AT-133B Indoor HDTV Antenna | Smartpass Amplified with 2 ANTOP AT-705 2-Way RF Splitter 2GHz. I live in NYC (Queens County) and reception is not bad since most the stations are in Manhattan etc. Early on with the digital changes there was this one channel I used to get and then subsequently I was no longer able to get it. Looking at tvfool I found that Channel: 4 (34.1) only has a max ERP of 0.3KW which seems low. I can't get it with the antenna I have and I was wondering if I should get this one from you're video or the ANTOP “Big Boy” AT-400BV Outdoor/Indoor(Attic) HDTV Antenna | Smartpass Amplified since it has that VHF element that I'm guessing would receive a station like that with low power. Or perhaps the one you mentioned is good enough since I'm relatively near the station. Fell free to correct me if I made any mistakes in my understanding of RF signals. BTW do you have a forum?

    Not sure why you did the non-VHS version as it would have been good to see the full results to compare. I've had this in my attic for the past few years and can pick up all available stations on VHF and UHF. To me, this is a key antenna have on your list of recommendations because of the aesthetics. Lots of people do not like the look of an antenna outside their house but would likely not object to this. The mounting options are also pretty great and easy to use. Super simply to attach to my truss and aim.
    One thing to note on this is that if I turn on the amplification switch it comes with, all my reception gets worse. Not sure if that is because signals are too hot or the amplification circuitry isn't the best. Looks like they have a new version of this that might be even better.

    Quite a bit of money to spend on an antenna that doesn't pick up VHF frequencies! I have the Clearstream 2Max which does the whole job for half the price. The Antop is better looking, so may be more suitable if you must use your antenna indoors, but most will have to get the one with the VHF element.

It's a small and very simple indoor unit but, I'm experiencing unexpectedly high performance from mine and would love to know if this is anomalous or if they have a remarkable design. They're on Amazon for ~$14 or directly from Antop's website on sale for $10. I've been playing around with a wide variety of indoor and small outdoor antennas for comparison and so far the only better performance has come from the Clearstream 2V.

    I live in a 2nd story apartment in Jacksonville, FL and currently have a RCA Basic Indoor Antenna Model: ANT111, your basic old fashion rabbit ears. Only you have to screw all the pieces together. It gets in most stations, including VHF. Recently I had to rescan for PBS because of the required change. This cause me to start looking for a new antenna, but as you said, most of the flat screen ones don't get VHF. Also, my TV is not by a window and the cheap cable that is attached to my RCA rabbit ears antenna isn't very long. I can't put up an outdoor TV antenna because it's not allowed in my apartment complex. I'm not looking for miracles, just an improvement on my current situation. hard for me to conceive of a VHF only antenna. but if you have one and can not get UHF signals, simply take a pair of old apple ear buds and slap them on the VHF antenna. no hammer, nails, or glue involved. wad it up in a ball or drape it across- any way you want. it seems the quality copper in the skinny wires is what picks up the ultra high frequencies. doesn't have to be apple ear buds, but i find they're all i need.

    • @dksta2346
      @dksta2346 4 роки тому

      Hi I'm a ham radio operator. Some of us (me) like to design and build our own antennas. You have two key words in you question. Shallow and valley. Broadcast TV that you would receive on an antenna generally uses 2 ranges of frequencies. They are VHF and UHF. Both of these bands are line of sight receivable. That means if you could visibly see the broadcast antenna at least with an instrument you could pick up the TV signal with an antenna.
      Now you need to know what TV signals are available in your area. At Antenna Man's sight you can find links for this information. Another thing you may have is repeaters. I have the towers for those visible in my back yard. I can get all of those with couple pieces of aluminum tubing. Not you. You are for some stations in your area about 60 miles. If you can get your antenna high enough you want a good old fashioned Yagi TV antenna with pre amps and amplifier. Try using two pieces of 52 inch wires hooked to a coax cable to see if you and rotate it to get any kind of reception before buying expensive antennas.

    Connected the piece of RG6 coaxial cable (about 12 inches long) to the VHF in.

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  3 роки тому

      It varies depending on many factors including the type of cable used, the antenna, and how strong or weak the signals are. In general I'd consider any cable over 30 feet to be long. However, if the signals are weak 15 feet could be a "long cable that kills your signal." If you are in the market for an antenna consider a custom antenna recommendation from me at the link below: www.antennamanpa.com/index.html

    What would you recommend for 12865 area? We have a RCA yagi and only have two channels. We’re aiming at Albany which is 53 miles away with hills in between. We also have a splinter that’s amplified. But I’m really considering buying the channel master amplifier with lte filter included. Before considering larger directional.

    • @cdavidhord
      @cdavidhord 4 роки тому

      @@jamesvw769 Hi James-that is incorrect. "Radiation" is a term used to represent the emission or reception of an antenna. It is often charted on a polar coordinate system showing the gain of the various lobes of the field at various angles and azimuths depending of the geometry of the antenna in question. You can see such patterns-look at the Channel Master website where they publish such diagrams for their antennas. This is important so if you want to optimize gain, or use the nulls in the antenna's radiation pattern to reject an undesired signal, or minimize gain in an unneeded direction, applying that gain to a more helpful direction. Yagis being highly directional sacrifice gain on the side lobes to achieve the large frontal directional gain. Using these diagrams helps in determining if you best need a "bow tie", two bow ties stacked vertically, an array of bow ties in the horizontal and vertical direction, or various types of more directional Yagis. Pick the one that best achieves your specific need in your situation.

      I have not tired that model yet but it has no VHF elements so it's unlikely to pick up stations on that band. If you are looking for the most channels possible there's no other way to get them other than to purchase a large antenna. Small antennas do not have as much gain and you may have to adjust them in order to pick up as many channels as possible.

I would like to know what you think is the best to purchase value for money for an outside antenna that picks up stations (UHF and VHF) ranging from 30 to 70 miles away with hills in between. One thing he did mention or you did that I did not know about was the included amplifier built into the antenna which of course is specific for this antenna. Others do not come with amplifiers. Thanks for the useful info on over the air antennas and how to info. It is nice to see someone caring about helping the public and not just thinking about making money.

      AT-400v is the model without the preamp. I have this model with the excellent KitzTexh 500 model 0-35db variable gain preamp and a Channelmaster inline LTE filter. Excellent results. Has hiVHF rods. The kitzTech amp has an fm trap and the lte filter eliminates interferrance from both the low end and high end of the vhf and uhf frequencies.
      The AT-400BV is the "smartpass" model with a fixed 18db preamp and I would skip that model. Has highVHF rods. Amp is either on or off and depending on your cable runs and signal strength this can be too weak or can overload your stations.
      The SBS800 is the model with the 7db to 22db gain preamp. It also works with fm signals. If you decide to go with this model and will do FM signals I recommend getting a fm/tv diplexer if you intend on uaing this with fm radio. It does not appear that this antenna can pull in AM stations.
      For am/fm I chose the excellent Pixel Technologies af-hd4 omni directional antenna. I get perfect 5 bars for pretty much any station in the Detroit market. Bought a Sangaaen hd radio and works awesome.

(800 also comes some some adapters for FM radio) The 400 just has a switch that does 10 or 33db. The 800 is 7-22db. That box also had a splitter built in to output to two coax instead of the one that the 400's box does.

      Antop UFO at-720 would work well. 70 mile omni directional and wont require aiming or adjustments. This would have to be roof mounted or put on some sort of mast.
      Now if you want the best reception then the Winguard RV specific directional models with rotor would be ideal. You will have to run a channel scan more often with this method and of course use the Antenna aim app to find your towers.
      Lastly if you want to not do either of the above and want the minimal amount of effort then I have seen the Antop UFO at-416b which is a small omni directional model. It has the same mounting threada as small security cameras and could possible be mounted to the big rig mirror, like some of those SiriusXM antennas can be.
      A good combination would be to get the HDHome run extend, a lte router with ethernet ports and a roku ultra or nVidis shield. Perfect for streaming, wifi connectivity and over the air.

    The reason why a lot of manufacturers on the higher end like Channel Master and the like, offer a"UHF only"antenna is because the circuitry is dedicated, this means that you're going to get every drop of forward gain that you can possibly get on one band,this is very important for people that are in the know like myself,I'm a ham radio CB enthusiasts and we build antennas that are dedicated to only one band,monoband if you will. Anytime that you start building antennas incorporate more than one band,you start compromising performance and if you don't believe me get that same antenna that you just made a video about as the VHF version with the UHF,then compare it with its twin brother that's a dedicated monobander and you'll see what I mean,there's a slight degradation of quality in the UHF side of the antenna and more than likely VHF side too.
