  • What defines the Republican Party today? And what are the animating forces galvanizing conservative voters in 2024? The spectrum of the political right is broad-social conservatives, libertarians, MAGA supporters, populists, and RINOs-and the issues prioritized by each group vary widely. Led by senior editor Rebecca Rosen, Atlantic journalists Helen Lewis and David Frum explore the evolution of our political parties and the future of American conservatism.

I strongly disagree that cats don’t love others and that they can in any way be a metaphor for Trump.

What did Churchill say about Americans? I may be paraphrasing here: They can be counted on to do the right thing but after they have exhausted every alternative.

In other republics, the president is the head of state, but the leader of the legislature is head of government - as prime minister.

It’s only radical revolutions that are spearheaded by the young or the poor. Reactionary revolutions are not, of which three examples are the Confederacy, the Franco revolt, and the Soviet coup.

As a Canadian I would look forward to 4 years of Trump.
He's as entertaining as anyone. As a candidate he doesn't disappoint. As President...holy...best America has? .. hardly, but reality is everyone duck. In Canada we will be laughing and ducking when he brings trade to stop. With Canada, not China.

Frum asks why run for President if you're afraid of the campaign and the job, when there are so many other things to do? Running for President makes people more likely to remember who you are so if you need to borrow money or solicit donations - for anything - from them, they will. A professor who has run for President is more likely to get tenure. A CEO planning an IPO can count on larger bids if he has run for President.
Frum cannot be unaware of this.

But then again he despises all 3rd party candidates along with any candidate who’s running as a democrat against Biden even though they are ppl who were not afraid of the campaign or the job. So he doesn’t really mean what he’s says.

I agree with David that a rout of the Republicans in’24 will mark the end of Trumpism in the GOP. The courts and his age will render him obsolete for 2028.

If only we could bet on that in 2024 for Trump and the GOP as well as Biden and all the neoliberals.

When Trump is gone his base will still be here. No quick fixes. We really need to have a round of reforms and updates to or system of government.

@@chuckhall5347 No his failure to get reelected, convictions on several or more felonies, and barred from doing business in NY (bankruptcy) will tarnish him so badly that not many will want to stick with that sunk ship. The GOP will try and claim he was never their choice, but was a tag-a-long to their wonderful conservative party.

At least with a Canadian and a Brit involved there is some level of objectivity in this discussion of American politics.

I left 2 comments this morning that were critical of David Fromm’s ideas but had no profanity or anything of the sort, and they have now been censored and removed. Is The Atlantic afraid of diversity of thought?

Arent conservatism and the GOP two completely different concepts? The GOP is all about money and power, conservatism is basically a regressive type of thought. And thats where America is going, backwards. Its in its nature, id like to think.

Yeah, I'd say the modern GOP is much more about populism and Demagoguery than conservatism. They are taking advantage of a poorly educated electorate, especially the old and mentally declining who are exposing themselves to hours of propaganda over the radio and TV.
