  • Let's paint watercolor portraits in procreate! This method is a really simpleand reliablewa for painting portraits from photos in procreate.
    I used a combination of brushes and a paper texture for this project:
    - Little pine brush (in the Drawing tab/Procreate Brush Library)
    -Fineliner Pen/Abstract Round/Water Blender (Amazing watercolor for procreate kit)
    -Blacksands paper texture
    The watercolor brushes and the paper texture are products I sell on my etsy store to support the channel. These tools help you create organic looking watercolor-textures in Procreate. This is not a critical thing and you can follow this video with any brushes or textures you might already have.
    - Amazing watercolor for Procreate (brushes):
    drifterstudio.etsy.com/listin...
    - Blacksands Paper texture:
    drifterstudio.etsy.com/listin...
    All of these brushes/kits/textures come with very clear UA-cam tutorials and you can also contact me directly if you need anything.
    If you cannot afford the brushes/texture, please message me on my Etsy store in the links above and I can help you. I love to teach art and help traditional artists try out digital painting. The income from the Etsy store helps this project be financially sustainable.
    I can earn money from UA-cam ads, but I turn most of them off and it's only about $100 a month. I wanted to turn off ads entirely but UA-cam is penalizing creators for that because it reduces youtube's revenue.
    The background music is called 'Yestalgia' and I have a license from Artlist 🙏

    Your tutorials are amazing and so inspiring! For your artwork on procreate what size canvas and what DPI do you use? I see you are able to use so many layers.

    • @calvinatdrifterstudio8438
      @calvinatdrifterstudio8438  10 місяців тому +1

      Aww thank you so much 😊 you can set the dpi to anything, it's really just a setting for the rulers and won't effect the print quality. For the resolution, I recommend using at least 3000px by 4000px. This will give you a lot of layers. In this video I was using 4000px by 5000px.
      The amount of layers will depend on the resolution of the file and the ipad model. usually the pro models have more ram, but all the newer ipads can have a bazillion layers. my iPad is old so it can make about 25 layers when my canvas is4000px by 5000

    a better way to get the white layer behind that’s supposed to mask the background color..just duplicate the layer, then add a clipping mask layer on top of that. fill the shape with white then merge those two layers. place that under your original drawing. that will completely block out anything

    Hi. Made a little self portrait. It was fun. I thought I used the Blacksands paper but turns out I used the one that came with the brushes (with the watermelon example), is the effect very different?

    • @calvinatdrifterstudio8438
      @calvinatdrifterstudio8438  6 місяців тому

      I'd love to see it 😱 blacksands is similar to the regular paper, I'd say it's has a somewhat stronger and finer/grainier texture. Both or great though for painting people ☺️

  • @odetteblomberg7517
    @odetteblomberg7517 11 місяців тому +1

    Hi Calvin, I have you’re brushes and almost all your paper texture, I love it! il would really like to do some printing, which printer and paper would you recommend?

    • @calvinatdrifterstudio8438
      @calvinatdrifterstudio8438  11 місяців тому

      😱 thank you so much for your incredible support! I went back and forth for awhile but what I realized that I cared more about the paper and the vibrant colors/dark blacks. I cared less about super high resolution printing. So this means I can use a color laser printer.
      I use a Canon imageless color laser printer and this machine can print on any kinds of paper unless it's super thick or has extreme texture. I can even print on many types of watercolor paper. Obviously since it's a laser printer, it cannot print super fine stuff. It's slightly lower quality than the iPad screen itself but I think that is absolutely fine for my uses.

      hi! Thank you so much. I'm using an app called Procreate. It's an application/program you can buy for your iPad. It will work with any iPad. I think the best iPad right now is the iPad Air 5th Generation. You will also need an Apple Pencil. This is the white pen I am using. It has a lot of amazing features inside and it feels like the most amazing paintbrush ever!

    How do I get the colour to say consistently the same , with the skin tone I brush along and keep the same pressure but it makes the dark patches like I have released the brush when I haven’t ?…..

    • @calvinatdrifterstudio8438
      @calvinatdrifterstudio8438  10 місяців тому +1

      Hi! This can be happening for several reasons. First, it could be inconsistency in the pressure. Either your are Changing pressure or the pencil is glitching and making stuttering strokes. You will notice that if you get a sort of broken line when you make one long stroke.
      Another thing could be the paper texture. Some of the textures might be too rough for people and this can make them look blotchy too.

    When you do the freehand select for the shading, how do you keep it from going onto the background?

    • @calvinatdrifterstudio8438
      @calvinatdrifterstudio8438  6 місяців тому +1

      Do you mean the white/blank area around the artwork? In most of my videos, the background is on another layer, so the selection tool wouldn't affect it. Usually I keep one element per layer and shade them individually

    • @sondramarie7867
      @sondramarie7867 6 місяців тому

      @calvinatdrifterstudio8438 yes. So when I add shading and try to feather. It goes on top of whatever background I have. Do you erase it? Because the shading is the top layer it overlaps, even with a seperate layer. Thanks for the reply!

    That background noise of people talking etc - is that part of the music? If not, why didn't you edit it out? Only music without that background noise would make the video more comfortable to watch.

    • @calvinatdrifterstudio8438
      @calvinatdrifterstudio8438  27 днів тому +1

      Yeah, you are right. I stopped using that track. My newer videos have better audio. Honestly the audio side of things has been the hardest thing to perfect because it sounds so differently on different devices. On some of my videos I can't even understand my voice because the bass is too boosted on my TV... but it sounds normal on the iPad 🤣 Originally I liked the background talking track because it hid some of the ambient noise in my house (kids yelling). Now I have a better recording booth and I learned a few tricks to eliminate background noises.
