    I really like the fact you have this improvement and left the rest of the bike stock. I like the quiet, in a stealthy way.

    MSushi I had it around 105 a couple times and she was pretty much out of gearing, wound a little tight... I'm guessing around the 110 mph mark with 883 gearing...
    Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Thanks StripBolt!
    Took her on a 300 mile loop around Mt. Hood in Oregon on Sunday and I couldn't have been happier. When we stopped for lunch, a couple guys thought it was a sleeper 1200. They didn't believe a stock 883 could hang with them like that...
    The salesman & friend from Latus Motorsports HD text me Saturday and said it looked like there would only be about 20 bikes for this ride... 110 bikes showed up Sunday morning! I'm working on the video(s)...

    Protential Iron buyer here. Been loving your vids. Really don't worry about the rambling!
    Loving your video's on doing the mods then your impressions afterwards. I just feel left out that you only pootled about. Would've been nice to see just a touch of the throttle to gauge the difference a bit.
    Otherwise keep it up! -subbed.

      Thanks for the kind words and input naycnay! I usually don't record when I'm doing stupid things on a bike... I don't know, I feel somehow distracted, as if I'm being watched. I know that's silly, as it's just me and my own camera... I have recorded some high speed twisties and wheelies, put it seems like such a squid thing to do on a sportster that I never post them. Maybe I'll do a squid compilation and post it as a comedic video or something...
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Hey Shawn- new subscriber here. I realize this is an old vid, but I was wondering what kind of helmet/bluetooth set you're running? Noise cancellation is excellent. Your videos are not long winded and enjoy watching every minute. Thanks!

    Exactly! That's just how it was on this ride too... You could not have summed that up more perfectly!

  • @ShawnSmoak

    The RPM increase is part of the Stage-1 flash, but you have the option to change the red line to whatever you'd like with the SE Pro Tuner. The 7K red line is quite safe for a Sportster motor, so I made no adjustments to it. In fact, the stock 5,500 red line is very easy to hit, so it's a welcome change...
    Thanks for watching, and for the kind comments!

    I ran my 883 for two years with JUST slip ons. Today i installed air cleaner and FP3. the difference was night and day.

      Wish they still had the fp3 available. Fp4 is trash from what I’ve read on reviews.

    Hi Robert, if you can find a dealer that will flash it for a reasonable price, I'd go for it. The tuner with software and cables is about $500 and has a pretty steep learning curve to run it. The help file assumes you're a trained Harley technician... The on board tuners only adjust fuel mapping and can't change red line, ignition timing, idle speed and so on. The previous owner of my 72 purchased the SE STP and had the dealer dyno tune it. That thing is crazy fast!

    new subscriber as well-haven't got my scoot yet but seriously contemplating 883 after your vids-was stuck on the idea of a 1200 Sporty prior to that-newer than '04 to take advantage of the rubber mounted motor now thinking of '07 or newer just to be able to play with the fuel mapping per your videos! pretty clear a Stage One tune(airbox,slip-ons,EFI flash/mapping) will do wonders for the 883! after watching you pull 70 in 2nd and 90 in 3rd,kind of makes one wonder what she'd do if you kicked it in to 4th,you know?

  • @MrSlowestD16
    @MrSlowestD16 10 років тому +2

    Ah, didn't know the screamin eagle allowed for data logging, a must for tuning, I say, but some flashers /tuners simply don't allow it, especially common with OEM EMS's I guess.
    Did you just adjust idle/redline/fueling, or did you push the timing a bit too? After you get your A/F dialed in (which is pretty easy) they're typically smoother, but you push all the power out with the timing (also do engine damage with timing, lmao - no point if it's stock)
    883 is a great bike, IMO. Lacks a bit power on the highway, but not the end of the world.
    Be careful on those back roads man, there's leaves and pine needles and shit off to the sides like nobody's business, that shit is crazy slick. Nice vid man, and yeah, I have the same problem of taking too long to explain (as you can tell with this wall of text), so you're not alone there.

    • @ShawnSmoak
      @ShawnSmoak  10 років тому

      MrSlowestD16
      The only adjustments I made other than the what the Stage-1 flash added was some VE table corrections due to having the stock intake and very mildly modified exhaust. All the mapping, ignition timing and red line changes were prebuilt by the Scream'n Eagle team in the Stage-1 flash. The VE changes I made were after some recorded runs and ran through the program. They were minor, and mostly from idle to approx 1/4 throttle at around 2,500 rpm's. The changes were to lean it out from the default flash due to the stock configuration of the bike. The program made no further changes to the timing.
      Ignition timing has a substantial effect on emission of a vehicle, and stock, are at the edge of safe for the engine and still meeting the numbers needed to pass emissions. The Stage-1 flash is simply knocking some of that out and allowing the engine to perform as it really should. If I install hi-performance items in the future, I'll have the flexibility to further adjust mapping and/or timing accordingly...
      Yeah, I hear ya about those leaves and needles! It's crazy just how slippery they can be. Don't want to be loosing concentration and slip into that mess...!
      Thanks for watching, and I loved your long winded comment! LOL Take care man.

    • @MrSlowestD16
      @MrSlowestD16 10 років тому +1

      Shawn Smoak Ah, gotcha, yeah, I can't say I know much about the effects of ignition on emissions, I only dealt with ignition for power :-\. So much understanding (and then debate...lots of debate) is required to understand how to tune an engine with 100% efficiency (whatever the hell 100% is, hahaha).
      Sounds like it should be a pretty solid map, and of course the drivability will be OEM for all intents and purposes!

    • @ShawnSmoak
      @ShawnSmoak  10 років тому

      MrSlowestD16 Yeah, the output is basicly stock other that few really cool exceptions. The warm-up cycle from cold is about half what it used to be. The exhaust note is deeper and smoother sounding. And lastly, which seems odd as I haven't physically changed anything, is the power band range has greatly increased. I can lug it down way more without upsetting the engine, and it still seems to pull hard at the point were it would previously bounce off the rev limiter. Before, the usable range was between 2,500 & 5K, with peak around 3K to 4K. Now useable is between 2K & 6K with peak performance around 3K to 6K.
      There's really no "feel it in the seat of your pants" HP or torque gain, but it's much easier to ride fast because it always seems to be in the power range. So in that sense, there seems to be a quite noticeable performance gain... I know I really enjoy riding this little Sportster, and never have that feeling that there just isn't enough power. Well, that's until I jump on the 72 and, DAMN! The Iron needs the 1200 kit!!! LOL

    • @MrSlowestD16
      @MrSlowestD16 10 років тому +1

      Shawn Smoak Yeah, the broader power-band might just be the result of richening it up a bit down low and maybe pushing a bit of timing.
      The 72 is a pretty bad-ass bike, but I'm really not one for Chrome. I'll take a 48 though, no problem. My only problem with it is the under-bar mirrors require a noticeable turn of the head (opposed to bar mounted...though you seem to be okay with them, it may just take getting used to) but more importantly, the comfort (or lack there of?). The 48 is pretty terrible....and while the tank looks awesome, that 2.2 gallon tank is a joke.
      48 with a corbin or mustang seat + an iron tank or larger peanut sounds pretty nice, but that's gonna run like 500 or so pretty easily. The other problem is that it needs a 6th gear to be "GOOD" on the highway, other than that it'd be pretty awesome.

    • @ShawnSmoak
      @ShawnSmoak  10 років тому +1

      MrSlowestD16 I'm not big into chrome either, it still shocks me that I ever purchased a bike like the 72... Something just kept pulling me in until I caved.
      I've really got my eye on the 48! But like you mention, the tanks sucks unless you live in the city. I've about had it with that tank on the 72! Fuel light coming on ever 60 miles is nuts!
      That, and the seat... So yeah, gonna have to throw some money at it right out of the gate.
      The newer 1200's loaf down the freeway in fifth gear. I don't even go into fifth till 70 mph. Hell I've freak'n forgot and have gone 20-30 miles before I realize the damn thing is in fourth... But I'd take a six speed any day! Especially on the 883"s... The 883's primary gearing with a six speed would be perfect.
      Have a great evening!

    Also, to answer your question, you can save a legal file in the SE tuner and re-flash the ECM before emissions. And to, you could simply unplug the power commander before emissions. However, the fines for running your bike on the street while tuned for closed course racing is simply mind boggling! You could buy a small home up here in the Pacific NW...

    Very nice video, don´t worry about it being almost 13 minutes, it was enjoyable. Quick question if I may. You mentioned the red line jumped from 5,500 RPM to 7,000 RPM after you installed the Stage One Pro. Did you have to make any special adjustments for that to happen? Or is that just part of the Stage One Pro does? Thanks and ride safe!

  • @dawnrobb8809
    @dawnrobb8809 11 років тому

    This may be dumb questions. Is the SE STP stage 1 something a "NOVICE" can do or should I pay the dealer to do it? Worried I might screw it up as I don't have your skills. Do you know if other on board tuners can do the same things as the SE does (rev limiter, etc.) ? If you could only do one would it be the SE stage 1 or ? I see you're happy with your results. I'm running Vied now with ac & muffler changes & 72 runs good but I know it could be even better with a proper tune. Love your vids!

    just had my iron 2018 upgraded with Vance and Hines shortshots staggered exhaust, FP3, and open airflow and difference in the overall performance is very noticeable. there is one problem, during my long ride , the check engine warning light came out which I "clear" in the DIAG.. The HD tech told me that I should have recorded the codes and forwarded to them.. before the stage 1 upgrade the chech engine warning light flash every now and then which I readily "clear" in the DIAG..

    Have you ever had a chance to use the Vance & Hines FP3? I have heard a few bloggers sung the praises of the fp3. But you're the first one I've heard use the super tuner. I was just wondering if one worked better than the other. Both seems to benefit performance. I will look into the cost difference.

  • @ShawnSmoak
    @ShawnSmoak  11 років тому

    The pro tune will allow you to go way out of legal. However, by default it stays within the legal levels, even after using the smart tune feature to make fine adjustments. After the dealer installed the 1200 kit and flashed the ECM with Stage-2, the only thing I would do at this point is have the dealer dyno your bike to dial it in perfectly. Dealer dyno tune = $300, SE Super Tuner Pro w/ cables & software = $500, PC-V w/Auto Tuners = $800. The latter two requires a lot of personal time...

    Thanks for the quick reply Shawn! I´m gonna get a 2014 Iron and it´s good to know I can increase the RPM to 7K, like you said, I suspected the 5,500 RPM limit would be easy to hit. You have a new sub here. Have a nice Sunday bro!

    Mine goes to 130 mph and has about 1.5k to go to redline and I have an 883 superlow I don't know what's been done to it I cruise at 100mph on my sporty at 3krpm, mine idles at 800 rpm starts at 1200rpm till it's warm then it drops to 800, mine will pull a wheelie easy, I bought it used from Harley with 500 miles on it had a custom paint job it looks black until you get about 10 feet away then it turns red I think it may have been a custom build cause it's the fastest sportster I've my dad or uncle has ever seen my dad weighs 240lbs and it still goes 130+ with him on it and I have a big windshield that comes above my head, buy some slip ons I got the screaming eagle 3" drag specialist pipes they sound amazing took no time at all to put them on you couldn't make these videos on my bike lol all you would hear is engine noise, and I have a 4.5 gal tank as well and forward controls

    “Super tuner pro”

  • @XXXDeadhead
    @XXXDeadhead 11 років тому

    My milage took a small hit with the 1200 kit, but oddly enough it is not very noticeable. I am curious, will buying the pro tuner allow me to tweak the bike out of legal limits yet still allow me to put it back for emissions? Could I use the power commander till emissions and then just unplug and remove the PC before emissions? This is all beyond my pay grade
