It might look like the pirates are elite crack shots shooting individual targets discriminately but what they can do the Red Coats can also do. They're operating under different doctrines though. Flint knows full line volley fire isn't going to do anything to the morale and discipline of British troops. His blokes are in cover so instead he's electing to have them simply kill as many as they can.
If you plant a bayonet on a musket, you can fight better in close combat, but reloading is more difficult. Since the infantry serves only as cover for the mortars, it must hold the line and fire salvo by salvo. Melee would be suicide under its own mortar fire. But as their opponent withdraws, the firefight is over very quickly.
They were also trained to fight in a fixed setting with rules for conduct and engagement. Pirates as with any force that can not play with the given rules find weaknesses in those rules to exploit their superior enemy. That's the truth of any form of guerilla tactic and asymmetrical warfare. Now the pirates might win on their own home turf but they will never be able to conquer England, but that's not their goal. Their goal isn't to win a proper battle, but to survive. It's the same with the vietcong, ewoks, partisans, or Taliban.
Having a man who served with the British on the side of the pirates he should have known not too fight on the beach and instead in the jungle like they do later on with greater success. He should have known he would not gain anything by fighting on the beach as it would be impossible to repel the landing between the support fire from the ships of the line and the numerical superiority of the British. So fighting on the beach was pointless lest you can hold. Now you can argue he thinned the numbers but he also lost men so that negates any losses he dealt. The British could afford to lose more men then the pirates could.
The point of that in the series is to make the British think the pirates are stupid, and make them think they had won so they could be lured into an ambush. Basically the idea is that they fight on the beach, then withdraw and make it look like a rout, then let the British go and attack the camp, and then when the British least expect it they surprise the British soldiers from behind and turn it into a chaotic melee which favored the pirates.
The assault is honestly daft. With defensive positions that visible, they'd have been bombarded from the sea. The line infantry would have just charged them as they'd barely get off a second volley before they closed the distance. Pointless to stand there volley firing.
Stupid battle the british should have sat in their ships and shot cannons at the fortifications, captain flint literally had a forest behind him but no he selected a open ground for some reason, the british outnumber him and are well equiped he should made his fortifications in the jungle because 18th century warfare was fought by formations and formations are hard to manovuer in tropical forests like that
But a miss means an opportunity. Remember they got but one shot. Takes a while to reload after that. But in the mean time, the hacking sound of the halberd has no delay.
That is true, but even with a musket you would still get a few shots during the time it takes for a person with any melee weapon to get to you and that is cut down if you have someone loading whilst you shoot. I doubt the reload time is fully accurate though in this clip.
You gotta remember that the holder of the colors and the sergeant at arms were very protected as a whole, the man with the halberd was the last line of defense for the man holding the flag, often he was one of the more senior veterans of the unit entrusted with protecting the colors. You feel bad for him, but really, you should feel bad for any enemy within ten feet of him.
Saving Private Ryan wannabes lol. Just fire from the ship (if they even came from one) directly instead of bringing infantry to the beach. It would’ve made things faster and easier (and with much less casualties for the Royals)
Or just land the infantry somewhere else and flank them. The reason why the Normandy Landing was done charging the German defenses is because the German capability to form the Atlantic wall (so the entire coast was defended) whereas here, only a small portion is.
Spain gave the British navy a couple of months to take The island and eliminate all pirates threaths ,or they would burn the colony to the ground. having almost all the pirate force on the beach, a foward attack and chase was the quickest way to victory and stop a very long guerilla from happening. On the other side, pirates were all on that beach on a purpose, they wanted the british troops to attack and pursue them in their "retreat" in the jungles of an island they do not know. This is how i see this battle
For all we know it was improvised grapeshot. A lot of people like to remind others that cannons can be loaded with any kinds of projectiles... Silverware, broken glass, coins, rocks, musket balls, pottery etc like they're really versatile and so easy to turn into giant makeshift shotguns. It does come with a big caveat though, whilst all of this works in theory, it's definitely not good for cannon and has a good chance of buggering it up and making it unusable after the first shot. But that said.... If you've only got the window or opportunity for one discharge and don't need to worry about doing maintenance and cleaning on it afterwards. These look like they were entirely designed to be single use surprises so they very well could have been real grapeshot or improvised, doesn't seem to be outside the realms of possibility to be honest. If anything I'm surprised they weren't able to get hold of more, even if they were just solid shot.
@Abhijit Pathak wake up. He invaded a sleepy Northern English coal trading port. His troops took to rowing boat s, landed in port, went straight to the pub and got drunk. They sank no ships. Killed no townsfolk and went home with sore heads from good local ale. The myth was written when USA was a fledgling state needing success and the UK a super power. Much has changed except the nonsense of a raid that turned into a farce. And of course, most of his sailors were English seamen who crossed sides because the colonial revolutionaries paid more coin
