The BEST Trip to LAPLAND in Finland 2021 with -27c Temperatures!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- This video shows the best bits of our trip to Lapland in Finland. With temperatures as low as MINUS 27 CELSIUS this was an experience we will never forget. We have a great time travelling to Lapland Finland and we took part in Reindeer Rides, Husky Rides, Frozen Lake Finishing, Snowmobile Rides and the list goes on.
Back in Saariselka, Finland we went winter walking, hiking and tobogganing. This town within the Artic Circle, Finland Lapland is stunning with it's wooden buildings and snow covered trees throughout.
The food is really good and similar to what we have back home with a few exceptions. The people were very friendly and spoke really good English which is a blessing for my poor use of foreign languages.
The sun rose after 10:30am and the sunset before 2:00pm. The afternoon felt really weird because it was only mid afternoon yet felt much later. Now I know why the locals take vitamin D supplements!
We had the Santa's Lapland experience which included a visit to see Father Christmas, or Santa Claus as he is locally known, at the Santa Claus Village. Personally I think you have to visit Finnish Lapland to do it properly.
I would highly recommend a visit to Finland. We didn't have time to get out of time and do the Northern Lights / Aurora Borealis properly, but we definitely saw some interesting lights in the sky.
There is still time to go to Finland 2021 so treat yourself and get yourself over there for the most magical experience discovering Finland.
If you want to know what winter walking gear to take check out my other videos. This includes skiing gear and winter mountaineering gear too.
Thanks, Andy.

Fabulous!! I smiled all the way through, wish I had taken my gang when they were your daughters age, thanks for sharing.
Thanks 👍 Evie was star-struck when she met Santa Claus 😍
Great Lapland is getting winter visitors again! The husky farms especially were desperate in some point during this Covid crisis. Still less visitors than normally there but looking much better now. Finns go to Lapland in spring typically, highly recomemended. More daylight and less cold then, still plenty of snow in March/April.
I didn't know that, thanks for sharing.
Some of husky farms had to kill dogs during lockdowns
@@WannabeOverlander Yeah that can happen unfortunately. These are working dogs, really hard to find them suitable adoption homes.
Winter is not bad.
Wow, looks an amazing place Andy. You have a lovely wee family, a trip your wee lass will never forget, I'm sure. Lovin' the reindeer. Great video. Davey.
I live in Winnipeg, Canada and lived in England until I was 40. I actually like temperatures that low, it doesn’t last long and it does mean clear, sunny skies most of the winter. 😁
Since we've been back the temperature has been approx 0-5 degrees c and somehow it feels colder! I'm sure it the cold winds we have that make it feel worse.
@@BackpackingUK It's the humidity in UK that makes it feel colder. The air is very dry in Lapland and this is the reason.
@@kennethainetdin3401 Exactly,i live in Helsinki and i also been in lapland and Hki. Feels colder bcause humidity
It's nice to see my country through someone else's eyes.. I'm glad You had a good time! ♥️
It's such a beautiful country, I've just arrived back to the UK. You are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place.
@@happyjive2235 😊 I hope You had a great time! ❤️
I thoroughly enjoyed every second. Can't wait to go back.
Hi enjoyed your video. Bet you want to go back. We went to Levi in December 2001 when our Daughter was 9. We have been back every year apart from 3 since! We have driven to Yllas and Rovaneimi but still in love with Levi. 8 years ago our daughter was married in an ice Chapel near Levi and we went for a week with 45 friends and family. That first visit was our only time in December we now always go in January when it is a lot cheaper. Thanks for sharing this as we haven't been to that resort.....yet. isn't it magical. Such a lovely family.
Wow, that’s for sharing this, I’d love to keep going back too!
Indeed, the cheapest winter season for ski centres and other holiday resorts in Lapland and Koillismaa (mainly Ruka) is indeed from around Epiphany to mid February, before the winter holidays in schools begin. It's some British fixation to visit Lapland before Christmas, meaning it's indeed not the cheapest time of the year for tourism.
Bloody hell! Out of all things people get addicted to, this must be the weirdest. Well done to you all!
Literally just landed back from Santa's Lapland this evening. Then seen your video pop up after being a subsciber for a little while. Really was a great experience. My daughter absolutely loved it. We stayed at the Reikolinna hotel. The huskies stole the show for me, Really was a great experience.
For me the Huskies were the best. I couldn’t believe how strong they were and how good natured they were too!
As Finn I have visited Saariselkä and Hotel Riekonlinnan too.
Your trip to Finland looks amazing and what brilliant memories for your daughter👍
It really was, I'm so glad we took enough footage to make a little video. I can see watching it back as part of a new Christmas tradition each year.
You couldn't get a more amazing experience for children than a trip to lap land at christmas time.massive respect too you.
Thanks 👍
Awesome!!! Greetings from Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮🇬🇧🇫🇮🇬🇧
Thanks 🙏
@@BackpackingUK Thanks 👍👍😀
Glad you liked it. I havent been in Lapland at wintertime over 20yrs. We had a military exercise there when i was in army and i had enought of lapland at wintertime. But its a beautiful place at summertimes too and specially at autumn, when the landscape is changing colours.
One of my friends in the military did an exercise in Norway in winter. I'm sure it's a totally different experience when it's work rather than prancing about in the snow on holiday!
@@BackpackingUK Well, pulling phonelines for the artillery in the middle of nowhere in -30 C weather by skiing isnt really a holiday and afterwards we had to pull back all the lines when we were moving to different location and start it all over again..
Anyway, i think you should made a visit to lapland at autumn. I think its called autumn leaf of color, we call it ruska. I guess its not that exotic for travellers, when there is not snow on the ground or the weather isnt freezing, but the nature is mindblowing at that time. People from southern Finland make trips every year to see that wonder of nature.
Nice to see people visiting my country
It's a lovely country, I would really like to return one summer.
@@BackpackingUK Its nice here when its summer
My wife’s friends are there atm too doing everything you’ve done. Definitely doing this next year. Would be good to do a colab with how you booked it and where you stayed, recommendations etc. Looks epic 🎄🎅🏻
We used Alex from Travel Counsellors who was great throughout! www.travelcounsellors.co.uk/alex.buckle/
You are so blessed. A child will never forget the wind kissing the face or the dogs who pulled the sled. . .be blessed.
I'm sure Evie will never forget this experience, we won't either!
Wow that looked fantastic haha You lucky barsxxxd 😂
😂
Thank you for bring us along.
No worries, I rarely get the family involved but this video is all about family time and Christmas! 🎅🏼 🎄
Lapland is a wonderful place 😍 welcome back in summer for polar days 😉
I would love to return in summer! Maybe one day 🙏
🙂😍
Going with my wife in a couple weeks to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. Hoping to see the northern lights, but either way looking forward to a lovely trip. Loved your video. Can’t wait to post my review videos on my channel 🤩
We could have done that too but the forecast wasn't great for us. You'll love it there and good luck with the lights!
@@BackpackingUK thanks so much ❤️
I have to say Im glad winter came early this year. Not a fan of the freezing temperatures, but snow is always nice ^^
I’m happy to be cold if there’s snow. Nothing worse than being cold and suffering with rain, ice and freezing cold winds! 😫
@@BackpackingUK Well I live by the shore so its like -20 AND windy 😅 in the northern finland its tamer if I would have to guess. Never been there tho
@@Dubbel12 Where do you live? But i can say that in Northern and Central/Eastern Finland in the winter it's usually colder than -20.
@@Dubbel12 Yeah in winter in Lapland the low air humidity makes the cold more bearable, also not windy typically
It was -36°C a week ago in Swedish Lapland.
Beautiful 🎅I love it 👍😁🎅
Thank you 😁
We’re hopefully going on January 2nd, hoping the rules don’t change!! How wonderful it looks, can’t wait!
I really hope you get to go!
Very well done. Keep it up. Finland is really one of the best place in Europe. :)
Beautiful. Got to get there some day
You really should, you won't regret it!
Amazing content. Love how happy you guys are. Amazing work mate.
Thanks 🙏
Great vid, must have been an amazing trip for you & the family. Would love to have a go with a dog sled team one day. Have a read of Call Of The Wild by Guy Grieve if you haven’t read it. All the best!
Thanks 👍 I was expecting big burly huskies but these smaller huskies were super-strong and and we flew along!
Really nice video! You should visit Åland (Aland Islands) in the summertime. Åland is an island in Finland.
I would love to return in summer!
Great video there Andy. Really loved it!! I am hoping to travel to Finland next week and wanted to check what are the rules and requirements for travelling to Finland from the UK and vice-versa? Could you please share your experience towards it?
As long as you’re fully vaccinated traveling isn’t too bad. We just had to pre-book Day 2 PCR tests for when we returned and also had our Covid Passports on our NHS App too. We had no delays either way. As long as your paperwork is in order it’s easy.
@@BackpackingUK Thank you Andy for the clarification!!🙂
Love it. I found your video looking for hiking spots in Finland. I lived there for a short while in Tampere with friends last year, sadly never got round to visiting Lapland. But hoping to go in the spring or summer at some point to also visit friends
Wow, thanks for sharing. I would love to go back in summer.
Looks absolutely amazing, I love the snowy weather but it’s a rare event here in England haha, I’m looking to take the wife and kids here to see and experience the magic ourselves.
Any recommendations were best to book and stay? Thanks 😊
In the description you'll see detail for Alex from Travel Councilors. Try Alex, he's really nice and very helpful.
Lovely family adventure. My temp record as a child in north of Sweden is -48c. Bloody cold. :-)
-48 😱
@@BackpackingUK It was New Year and we were trying to light some rockets and fireworks. But had to give it up. Our fingers were frosen stiff in just a few minutes in that cold. :-)
stunning and rdiciulously expensivve :D
Yes! 😂
What a cool video! Thank you.
Glad you liked it, thanks for watching.
I have lived my whole life in finland but actually i have never been in lapland. I live in south of finland. Here the temperature right now is -20°C.
It’s a beautiful country, very jealous! I would love to visit Helsinki one day.
i was once in lapland but it was summer
I have never been lapland as well.
Wonderful experience 👍💕

Brilliant !!! Merry Christmas ! atb
Thanks, you too!
Yeah, iam live lapland finland, i love finland winter and long and hot summer.
I would love to return in summer! 🌞
Best video yet 😉 🎄🎅
Cheers mate 👍
Welcome to Finland.
Thank you!
I wish I could someday afford to go there myself in the winter season.
It's not cheap, Laura spent 2 years saving for this, but it's well worth it!
Remember on next trip to Lapland. Reindeer's are wildlife animals, not ment just to please tourist's in resorts. Respect the local culture and nature, don’t just consume it
With love from Lapland(FI).
We, and everyone else to be fair, were very respectful of the reindeer.
Great video andy, where would i even start to look for this exact trip to lapland my kids would love this? Cheers
I think I’ve put Alex’s details in the description. He’s from Travel Councillors. He really knows his stuff!
I'm actually in Saariselkä tonight for the last night and I've been wondering where all these Brits have come from. A friend of mine was in Levi last week and also noticed a large number of specifically British tourists and not much else.
I think it's because most of us Brits are now double vaxed so the likelihood of becoming ill is much less hence why we feel that we are fine to travel.
@@BackpackingUK Might be. Just found it really odd I've not seen a single other foreign nationality represented. Either way hope you and your family enjoy the rest of your stay in this paradise.
Usually around christmas Lapland is full of Brits. When i was visiting Lapland around christmas as a Finn and went to a restaurant even the waiter was little shocked to see another Finn there. He explained that most tourist around this time of the year are British.
goddamn it boys they're here to make us their new colony!
Saariselkä is near Murmansk and Kola Peninsula. British troops were there 1917-20, because of WW1 and Russian civil war.
Nice video!!. remember to bring the camera to inside in a plastic bag so the moisture doesnt get on the cameras image sensor
Thanks for sharing 👍
Did you rent the warm clothing at the resort? Beautiful video.
Yes, we went straight from the airport to get out clothing, One piece suit, boots, mitts and socks were included. We just needed to take base layers, mid layers and spares.
Hi we are going a week on Saturday. I know they supply snow suit. Do they supply footwear or do we take our own thanks.
We were supplied with a snow suit, snow boots, mitts and one pair of woolen socks. I would strongly recommend taking additional thick socks, top and bottom base layers, fleeces, balaclava, hat, spare pair of gloves, etc, etc. If it's really cold you'll want lots of layers. Hope this helps and have fun!
When I was in primary school, we were used as child labor to entertain tourists. meaning that wevwere dressed as elves and gnomes and spent a day playing outside and waving at tourists.;) Fun times.
😂
Fine video. Thanks.
Thank you 🙏

Oh no! Walking on a cross-country skiing trail. That is a big mistake here in Finland. Die-hard skiers are known to be very angry people..
I know, I know. We didn’t go near the xc ski tracks and we kept an eye out for them too!
"Die-hard skiers are known to be very angry people." Not true, but you can find idiots everywhere. This is from one born in Rovaniemi. ; ) Backpacking UK - I am so happy for you, have a nice Christmas time. : )
Hi, May I know which month you visit Lapland? We’re planning to visit on december. Looking for some some travel tips😃
We went early December last year.
@@BackpackingUK thanks a lot 🙂
very nice!
❄️❄️❄️💖💖💖👍👍👍
you should go hiking there!
I’d love too! There were cross-country skiers everywhere too.
Hi what month and date was you in Lapland?
What a beautiful family! And a great experience for your daughter!
Finland is an amazing country, which the UK would do well to take a few
tips from (e.g. the world's leading state education model - plenty of content on this
platform, for the interested)
I'd love to go back in summer!
👍🎅👍
My plans to go here keep getting dashed, so will be going January of 2023. What month were you there?
We literally got back last Saturday!
@@BackpackingUK Nice! A fun place for kids and us bigger kids ;)
Lapland💙
En ole käynyt Lapissa talvella ainoastaan kesällä.🇫🇮
I would love to go back in summer, especially for the long summer days.
@@BackpackingUK i usually suggest to people, if u visit finland at winter, go lapland. If u visit finland summertime, go south/mid finland. Laplands nature is so magical at winter, but summertime, southern finlands full of life and the temperature is nice🤗
@@BackpackingUK and if u enjoy the quietness, u should rent a cottage next to a lake. Every evening u go to sauna, then jump to the lake👌
Hiya mate! You all right?
How much money did you spend to all those activities? For me as a Finn they seem pretty overpriced and not even exotic for Finnish tourists, which have been priced out from their potential customers.
Ours was an all-inclusive package so unfortunately I don't know individual prices.
haluun takas lappiin
Same here! Maybe in summer next time.
@@BackpackingUK I've been there many times in summer and it's amazing, just watch out for the mosquitos :D

Yes we are, thanks for watching.
@@BackpackingUK ok... handsome...

The Fins don’t like swimwear do they 😂
@@BackpackingUK not in Sauna we don't...Ladies first and then it's men's turn..mixed Sauna Nope only Germans like it

Would have needed beard to experience real frozen state on face :)
😂
On kyllä kylmää pakkasta - 27 °celsiusta palelee
I've never experienced a frost like that before, especially on our faces!
I have always wondered why British tourists always walk in the middle of the pavement and don't yield even when I ring my bike's bell... I always have to stop and tell them to move which annoys me so much... And this happens every day.
In the UK cyclists ride on the road or cycle lanes, not the pavement.
You shouldn’t be on the pavement.
Those dogs dont looks huskies...
There's a few Pointers in there (also called Eurohounds).
Winter is making beautiful spectacle of nature. ps: please to appraise my short movie about Frozen lake in Primeval Nature. Thanks r watching
I'll check it out!
You do know that Lapland (Lappland) covers the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia?
Yes, but Santa Claus lives in Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi Finland. ; )
I didn't know this included Russia, thanks for sharing.
It is all about branding. This shows it works.
Stay at home now
Yes, we were very lucky to go when we did.
Only they take vrom yoy is MONEY
That’s a bit harsh. We had a great time. To be fair it’s going to cost a lot when it’s so remote and can you imagine the cost of keeping a runway open at minus 27 degrees! Of course it’s going to cost a lot of money!
POVERE RENNE😪😠😠,e poveri cani
You simply don't understand just how well loved and looked after these dogs are. Look how my daughter and the dogs were together. These are working dogs, not lap dogs!
These animals love doing the work
absolutely rip off this place
That's a bit harsh. The costs associated with going to a remote location in winter are always going to be high.
