    With its direct-injected, high-revving VTEC 4-cylinder engine paired with Acura's first ever 8-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission, the 2015 TLX 2.4 may just be the sport sedan the company needs to attract buyers away from more well established German luxury brands. Combine its fun driving dynamics with strong value, best-in-class fuel efficiency, the latest technology, and this new TLX should be making it to a lot of buyer's short list.

    I'm watching this 7 years later, and I must say, this TLX still looks nice to me~ The interior, yes it is dated, but I don't think it looks all that bad on the inside still, and I would definitely want to buy this car.

      @@kevpier9326 I agree, Acura always has that value quotient with them, plus you get excellent Honda reliability. It may not be the most luxurious, but certainly luxurious enough for someone who is looking for some of that luxury. The interior is going to be easy to use for people, and you're going to know how to use it right away. Plus, that 8-speed torque-converted dual clutch is a very nice transmission compared to ZF's 9-speed transmission that the V6 model had.

    I bought one for my bday in October. Fucking love it. I can prove that on the highway, with premium gas and at a constant 75 mph (no cruise control ), it gave me 43 mpg. Giving me 31-33 combined and about 28/29 in the city.

    Got my TLX I4 TECH ten days ago and your review was very helpful as I was not sure about the V6 or the I4 choice. Took both on extended test drive back to back and had exactly the same impression about how the 4 cylinder feels and drives. Signed the papers on the same day, love the car !

  • @kungpaobenji27
    @kungpaobenji27 8 років тому +14

    The 2.4 4 Cylinder Engine is legit. Was a fun experience when I sat behind the wheel. I could sense the guy's enthusiasm when test driving this car. If Sofyan Bey were a pretentious host pushing a car for the sake of being "more expensive," he would've rated the 6 cylinder version of this TLX higher. My only dislike is I heard a rumor about the rear lacking heated seating capabilities.
    For those arguing how an Accord can be had for cheaper, let's me put this thought in your heads. In present day 2016, I can honestly say a 2nd Gen Acura TL from 2002-2003 looks more desirable today than a 2010 Honda Accord on the road. Car payments suck. If I'm going to make them, it's going to be for a car/model that I'll enjoy 6-12 years down the line as well. The only Acura TL I do not like would be 4th gen being last one (2010-2014), but that's already a well-known disaster.
    Also not saying "luxury" divisions of Toyota, Honda, and Nissan are better by default as well because the old Toyota Solara Coupes, Celicas, and even recent 2016 Camrys have catchy exteriors in the present day. Hyundai 4 door sedans of recent have nice exteriors and interiors as well.
    As for why Sofyan prefers this Acura TLX 2.4 Engine 4 Cylinder over a 2014-2016 Honda Accord, he literally mentioned:
    1) Sportier Sedan Feel
    2) Premium Feel
    3) Dual Clutch Transmission
    4) Output of 4 Cylinder performs higher
    5) Refinement being a more comfortable quite ride.
    Car payments suck...so if I'm going to make a decision, I think the Acura 2015-2016 models would look nicer on the road than a 2016 Honda Accord in years 2022-2024. Price difference is not major especially considering the fact that models like the Toyota Corolla START at 36K USD in places like Thailand, Vietnam, Brazil, India, etc due to the import tax regulations.

    Thanks for the great review. I drove the V-6 AWD and the 4 cylinder FWD back to back and have to agree with your conclusions that the 4 cylinder seems more responsive, and the 8 speed seems to just work better than the 9 speed, which seemed to be hunting at time for the right gear while the 8 speed didn't have that hesitation.
    So I ordered the 4 cylinder with the Tech package, Slate Silver/Black interior, and it is scheduled to be built around 3/15/15 in the Marysville, Ohio plant. The dealer, Fox Acura in Grand Rapids, MI, expects to have the car on their property by the end of March. If you live in SW Michigan, I would recommend this dealership. When I bought my 2014 MDX about a year ago and couldn't find a ride to their store, they sent a driver out to the house in Holland, MI, about 40 miles away. They will repeat that service when the TLX arrives.
    In my youth, back in the day, I spent about 20 years driving various race cars at a road racing course near Clarkston, MI called Waterford Hills Race Course, along with some racing at Mid-Ohio. I wasn't a great driver, but a good one, winning several championships over the years, the last one in 1999 in a 475 HP Ford Mustang. I mention all that stuff to establish my "bona fides" as a driver and I have to say that I really think that Acura has done an outstanding job on the handing and acceleration offered by the TLX. Soichiro Honda's mantra was always to get all the components of the car in balance, with enough power but not excessive power, big enough in the interior but not too big, make a profit but not a killing, so that everything worked in harmony with everything else. He would applaud the TLX.
    As an aside, the 2014 Acura MDX is pretty impressive too in the handling and power departments.
    If you like car stories, check out "Forty Cars That Owned Me" on Amazon. Most of my road racing and pro rally experiences are there along with my opinions on what makes a collectable car. The short answer is outstanding styling with adequate reliability.

    In my line of work, I drive a lot. On average, 30-35 thousand miles annually. I enjoy driving a luxury car that won't break my wallet. Acura cars suit me perfectly. Sure they may not have the razor sharp driving dynamics of a 3 series or an A4 but that is of little interest to me. I drive a car to about 200 to 250 thousand miles before is get a new one. In my personal experience, no BMW or Audi was able to last this long without spending huge sums of money in repairs. Once my cars hit the century mark, reliability became a nightmare.

    I'm actually pretty impressed with the new TLX and would probably consider the 4 cylinder model even coming from a V6. I wonder why Acura didn't also pair the V6 with this transmission would have kept costs down and made for a sportier drive. (Also on the wheel spin front not much can top my ES350 with 215 width tires, no idea what Lexus were thinking).
    The only thing I wish the Japanese brands would bring over is the diesel models. The German brands still completely own that territory and despite the excellent fuel economy of the TLX 4 cylinder the German diesel engines offer better fuel economy (and more power).

    I have the 2013 Honda Accord Sport CVT. I consider it luxurious, sporty and premium in my eyes. I got it at 23k and it has fog lights, blutooth, rear view camera, infotainment system, dual climate control, real leather steering wheel and transmission lever, A Sport mode, Paddle shifters (if you like to use them), high quality black seat material, 18 inch stunning alloy wheels, dual exhaust pipes 189 hp and 182 lb ft of torque etc. It has everything I am looking for in a car. In actuality this TLX is not worth the exorbitant amount of moola! Where I live it's always sunny and hot practically year round so I don't need a sunroof (I hardly even know it exists anymore in my moms 2009 EX Accord), I like the satisfaction of cranking my own engine (don't need push to start), Right turn lane camera (that's what I have mirrors for), heated seats would be nice feature to have but it's not a necessity. Yes, I would never give up the Honda Accord Sport for this!

      Andres Santana It's incredible. I got mines in white because the contrast of the white/black accents in the car makes it looks really really good and sporty. In all the other colors, it looks quite plain and conservative. All the safety features, power, fuel economy and ride quality is why I chose it (I got the v4 with tech package). The ride is very very smooth and super quiet. I used to not like driving but now I drive my TLX every chance I get because it's so fun and comfortable to drive. The V6 has a lot of power but it was too jerky for my taste and the torque converter in the V4 is what makes the ride exceptionally smooth. You should go test drive it to see if it's the right car for you.

I don't know about 0-60 but I timed this car hitting 0-50 in 5.5 seconds (Sport mode) which feels plenty fast. The engine just loves to rev and it is a blast to take it to 4000-5000 RPM. Please do a similar review on the 2018 TLX base model, would love to know if performance has improved vs. the 2017 model (everyone is reviewing the A-spec but the base model is what most buyers will probably go for).

    • @theredline
      @theredline  10 років тому +12

      Good question... and tough decision. We like both vehicles equally well. The Mazda will be less expensive but it's also not a premium brand. The Acura feels and drives slightly better, we do feel the Mazda looks better but it compares more with an Accord. The TLX has a much better engine and transmission combination, so it will be quicker than the Mazda and fuel economy should be similar. Between the two, we'd go with the TLX and spend the extra money. The Mazda6 has a very dated infotainment system and we like the sportier driving dynamics of the Acura more. Just be prepared to spend a bit more as well, but if you're on a budget, we wouldn't fault you for choosing the 6.

They have the performance ability and the aftermarket to support the Rally scene, as well as the mundane ideals that appeal to regular consumers.

    Thank you for an awesome review. I always enjoy watching your opinions. I am in the market for shopping either lexus gs 350 or a brand new nx 200t f-sport until now. I start to lean towards acura tlx v4 just because i can save a bunch. I currently have tsx and have no complaints. I wanted to try lexus for the first time but i guess i am meant to get stuck with acura products. Hope acura had a convertible tlx however i dont believe it will happen any time soon. I just got a pilot touring for my wife and absolutely in love with it. With tlx i know honda will bring me another grand slam.
    Thank you for fixing my decision on my next vehicle with a great review. Made my day easier.

      For all the great things he said about it (and I'm not too big on Acura) you choose to critique that. Mercedez still uses that horrible number pad dial in many of the new cars (except the new C class). don't be a troll but i guess of all things a nice looking display is important to you and not the driving mechanics, premium cabint and bang for buck....

    I think of Acura as more of a premium brand than a luxury brand but they're really starting to impress me. The new TLX reminds me of the First gen TL, the smaller engine (5cyl back then) is the more sporty model.

    Very good review... I'm looking to buy a new mid size-car soon but I've being looking at Chrysler 200c with its cool shape and now this Acura TLX 2.4. The 200 is a lower class car I know, but is this Acura worth the extra 5000-7000 dollars? If money is not an issue, what car is the better choice or value 2theRedline? I know Acura will be more reliable but the 200c is nicer looking on the outside to me than the AcuraTLX and that Pentastar V6 is awesome but I'll go with the Multiair 2.4 if I went for the 4cyl in the 200c.

    • @theredline
      @theredline  10 років тому +13

      We weren't too impressed 2.4 multi-air engine and 9-speed auto combination in the Jeep Cherokee but haven't driven it yet in the new 200. The 200 V6 is better but there were times where we felt it had too much power and it would overwhelm the front tires constantly. The TLX would be our choice if you can swing the additional cost. It feels more expensive, handles better, has a nicer interior with more features, and you'll just enjoy a better ownership experience.

      Too bad the base TLX doesn't offer leather because I hate having to dish out another 4k just to get leather but I realize its a package deal.

    • @theredline
      @theredline  10 років тому +21

      Rudy F The faux leather feels very nice, don't forget that all the German rivals use the fake leather as well and require you to get a 3-4 thousand dollar premium package to get the real stuff. Acura throws in Navi, upgraded audio, driver assistance tech, and more for the same money.

    I went to test drive one today. I drove the I4 model because Im trying to get a car with better gas mileage than my G35. It wasn't as slow as I expected a 4cyl to perform. I could really feel the rear wheel steering too and thought the ride comfort and interior was very good. I got offered a great lease deal so lets see.
    Im definitely going to miss the RWD, and the manual transmission my G35 has shes getting old and i just want a comfortable cruiser now.

    Practically speaking, who needs a 6 speed manual when you have the 8 speed DCT! Those shifts are faster and crisper than even a professional driver could achieve with a manual. And since most of the people in the world need to drive their cars on clogged highways/roads to get to work to pay for their cars why would one want to be depressing a clutch and rowing your own gears during your daily commute?

    • @stickaman
      @stickaman 10 років тому

      2theRedline I think that would be a bad move for Honda especially when they still offer 5 sp manuals and other automakers are past that. Also they still dont have a V8 or RWD in their lineup and really only 2 options of hybrids...they used to be the leaders in innovation and tech and now they have fallen behind Hyundai and Kia...of course this is just my opinion of an outsider looking in.

    • @J-W.-
      @J-W.- 10 років тому +1

      Forget it about RWD it's not that much of a advantage of a FWD car hence why they haven't done it. Plus people buying these cars do not care if it's FWD AWD RWD hell they don't care if it's 1WD most people (not all such as car enthusiasts) just want a car to get to point A to point B.

      Pierre, I believe it’s required due to the high compression engine in this vehicle. Regardless, to maximize power output and possibly lengthen the life of the engine, why be penny wise and pound foolish putting regulat gasoline in such a beautiful precision vehicle.

    Actually, a big difference in the V6 to the I4 is that the 4-cyl doesn't have fog lights (and it has Leatherette, not leather).

    • @theredline
      @theredline  10 років тому +1

      You'll get the real leather with the tech package on the 4-cyl. Also, the fog lights are part of the advance package, you can add those back through a dealer accessory.

      @senorgato70 10 років тому +1

      It depends on which Drive-E you are talking about. The V60, yes, but the TLX is not a wagon so it's not in this class. The S60 Drive-E is rated at 25/34 while the TLX 2.4 is 24/35.

      Incorrect. For S60, the 240HP Drive-E is rated at 25/37, 302HP is rated at 24/35. So it's class leading.

      Thanks for clarifying. I do find it unusual that the Drive-E versions of the S60 don't have a more significant mpg advantage. Granted, they are a bit more powerful than the corresponding 4- and 6-cylinder TLX's (non-SH-AWD), but not significantly, especially considering they are based on 4-cylinder powertrains.
