  • Totilas was bred by Jan K. Schuil and Anna Schuil-Visser in Broeksterwâld (Broeksterwoude) in the Netherlands. They gave him his basic training. Upon entering major competition at age five, he was ridden by Jiska van den Akker and exhibited at the 2005 World Breeding Championships for Young Horses at Verden, Germany. There he distinguished himself as the best horse from the Netherlands, and placed fourth in the final ranking of five-year-old dressage horses.[4][5] Also in 2005, his owners contacted Edward Gal and asked him to ride and compete Totilas.[6] In 2006, after Gal began working with the horse, his sponsors Cees (also spelled Kees) and Tosca Visser purchased Totilas in the name of their investment company, Moorland BV.[1][6][7] After this purchase, the horse competed under the name "Moorlands Totilas".[8]
Totilas was ridden throughout most of his international Grand Prix career by Gal, under the flag of the Netherlands. Gal first began working with Toto in 2006 and the pair started to compete in 2008. Gal and the team of people who worked with the horse understood that Toto was "something special" after their first Grand Prix (GP) competition,[3] with Gal later stating, "He has an incredible amount of talent; it’s simply a pleasure to ride him."[1]
In July 2009, Gal and Toto broke Anky van Grunsven's world record score in Grand Prix Freestyle[9] with an 89.50% mark at Hickstead, England, and shortly thereafter followed it up breaking their own record with a score of 90.75% and win gold at the 2009 FEI European Jumping and Dressage Championships.[10] The pair also won a silver in the special dressage and gold in the team dressage event.[11] In December 2009, at the fourth leg of the 2009-10 FEI World Cup Dressage series at Olympia in London, they extended their record in GP Freestyle to 92.30%, more than 10 points above the second-place finisher.[10] They won that season's FEI World Cup final with a win in GP Freestyle at home in the Netherlands, winning by more than 7 points with a score better than their first world record.[12] The pair also have a world-record score in the Grand Prix Special discipline to their credit, having recorded 86.460% at Aachen in July 2010.[9][13] The pair were triple gold medalists at the 2010 FEI World Equestrian Games,[13][14] becoming the first horse-rider partnership ever to sweep the three available dressage gold medals (team, special and freestyle) at a single FEI World Games.[13]
The horse's career was not free of controversy, particularly due to his training using the highly controversial "LDR" (low, deep and round) hyperflexion training technique also known as Rollkur, which faces claims of causing physical harm to the horse,[15] and is considered "mental abuse" by the FEI.[16] Critics claimed that his extravagant paces were not natural, but rather a product of harmful training, accusing Totilas' trainers of artificially inflating dressage scores and corrupting the fundamentals of the sport. One German equestrian magazine compared his performances to those in a circus.[17][18] The head of the World Cup judging panel at the Olympia competition in London dismissed such criticism, saying, "People should be big enough to recognise brilliance when they see it."[18]
While some give primary credit to the skill of Gal as the primary reason the horse reached such a high level at a very young age for a dressage horse,[3] Anne Gribbons, dressage technical adviser for the United States Equestrian Federation, assessed Totilas as having taken the sport to a new level: "He is capable of such power and balance while he's in motion that it is almost beyond what most other horses can do."[3]

This is what dressage should look like through all the levels. Light, happy and classically trained horses. Gal turned that incredible horse into a heartbroken machine. It was forced and traumatic for this amazing animal to have to go through what he did all for peoples entertainment. Dressage trainers, riders and judges need to talk a long hard look at what test actually deserves the high marks and what doesn’t. Dressage needs to return to its classical roots before more and more horses end up like poor Totilas💔

I always love looking at this footage, and comparing it to the Grand Prix horse Totilas became. There is such a vast difference especially in the softness and swing. He seemed to have turned into an iron horse from a supple, soft, elastic loveliness which was impossible not to notice as a youngster. We all know his training methods were not ideal in fact they're now banned. The results of this training method are clear to me particularly if we go on from comparing the young Totilas with the GP Totilas then look at a horse that was trained very differently, the young 5yr Valegro and the GP Valegro. Then the two together. Valegro Sitting with a soft round frame , in extensions round up from his wither to his poll rather than out with the chest, hollow back with the head drawn in on Totilas. Valegro seemed to fly, he almost appeared to defy gravity, hinds pushing up underneath. Totilas on the other hand marched like an American saddle horse , flashing his very free shoulder, chest out front end held back to almost an extreme degree, back sunken, hinds trailing out. As young horses Totilas had the edge in the free shoulder certainly as witnessed by the crowds gathering. Then it was all about the trot in the front even though this is the gate the most easily and dramatically improved in training. Valegro the edge in athleticism absolutely also as witnessed by his scores as a young horse. Valegro's trot got better and better, Totilas's trot got worse and worse particularly behind where he became much weaker. I feel aside form the judges bias back then solely towards flashing front ends that had Totilas had Valegro's training things would've been very different. In my mind anyway far nicer than the marching iron soldier of a horse Totilas became. One can't be sure if his soundness issue was training or genetics but it's a great pity his career was so very short and that his softness, suppleness, elasticity wasn't better preserved for the future. In the classic silhouette of a dressage horse it's easily discernible that his backwards parallelogram as a GP horse is a result of training because he had plenty overtrack as a youngster, certainly enough to push into a soft hand to enable him to sit and rise through the wither and poll rather than pushed into a fixed hand stopping the front end and head. It produced the extremely dramatic front end movement but at a cost of the whole ideal. None of which was the horses fault.

very soft and " natural " attitude . excellent cadence /rythm . natural balance. look at extended trot : really pushing forward.
what a shame this horse was turned into a "circus" artificial "winner" !
high level competition is now all but satisfactory on many levels.
have a look to neckerman, Klimke, theodorescu, an so many others ... were not so bad ! and certainly more somewhat "respectful" of the horse nature. now competition is what it is : you have the choice not to reach the top placed , or to agree and go at the very end of what you can do in training ! the choice is yours ... But as a "profi " I must say that a lot of riders go now to "new age" so called smooth methods . all said by previous ancient trainers as be been lost in the mist of "competition".
modern competition - horses or humans - is now a days a nightmare leading to physical and mental abuse .
" Money makes the world go round" as says the tune !

What a classicly moving horse. Too bad. You can always tell when a horse has been ridden/trained deep by looking at their hind end in motion(not the head and neck), they get that articulated bus/mechanical look about their movement. You see none of that here like you do in later years.

  • @hein4365

A pleasure to look at, horse is round in his movements. After Edward Gall started driving him, Totilas pushed his back away. His movements became unnatural. Then in Germany the horse was destroyed. Eternal sin

  • @karilehman9882

Ha! I just got into an argument with a high level trainer about how you HAVE TO SIT THE TROT and you're a bad rider if you don't. Here we have an internationally competitive trainer switching to posting mid-test because it was better for her horse at that moment. I bet the judges still penalized it 🙄
Also, his gaits look like they would be AMAZING to ride here vs the jerky thing Gal had him doing. So much smoother, like he's floating!

Being a champion isn’t aways most important. I don’t agree with Edward Gall about pulling a horses head so high. But Gall sure did get him to the Champion level and into a profitable stud career.
And obviously he (Toto) wanted to please Gal.

    • @loas5154
      @loas5154 3 роки тому +2

Horses unfortunately usually try to please their people. They've been bred to be friendly for thousands of years. There's very little horses that'll continuously fight against a brutal rider, most of them will eventually give up and just try to compensate and behave in a way that the level of suffering is as low as possible. I've seen it a lot. Horses may not have a sound for pain, but they speak - with their faces and bodies. Compare the faces of horses out in the field with those that are ridden by e.g. Edward Gal. The mouth, the eyes, the ears, and general expression - the overly flexed neck when the horse is pulled behind the vertical or puts himself there because he knows he's expected to or just cant balance, that in combination with the head behind the vertical, the sunken ribcage and the high croup with backwards outbreaking hindlegs and errors in the tactfullness (walk - 4-stroke, trot 2-stroke - especially in trot, passage and piaff you can often see only one leg on the ground at a time, canter 3-stroke) are all symptoms of incorrect and harmful riding. There's lame horses getting 90% grades and nobody seems to see it. No wonder half the judges still gave Totilas high grades when he was obviously lame. It's a shame, for real. If you wanna check in on some correct dressage riding, try e.g. Anja Beran. There's a huge difference, I promise.
