  • Humility is a virtue that is not easily acquired, yet Jesus teaches that it is very important in Luke 14.
In this video, Dr. Pitre discusses the 12 steps of St. Benedict of Nursia, based on Luke 14, that can help us to to increase in the virtue of humility.

Beautiful, Dr. Pitre! I am tremendously enlightened by your talk. I sincerely believe that humility enhances wisdom & conversely arrogance diminishes wisdom, which is an Arabic proverb. I am a Muslim, & have a lot of regard & love for practicing Christians, as we are all brothers in faith.
Thank you Sir! And God bless you.

I can't say I agree 100% with this. I behaved and thought like this, absorbed a great amount of abuse and ended up with severe clinical depression, angry with God and blaming him for messing me up.
Step 2. It's OK to occasionally please yourself. Peter was rebuked for refusing to let Jesus wash his feet. Let people love you.
Step 4. If someone hurts you, lovingly ask them to stop.
Step 7. Don't judge yourself inferior. Don't judge others as superior, just don't judge or compare yourself to others. All have sinned.
If you put yourself last, If you hold yourself to a higher standard than others you are being arrogant, not humble. "I don't expect THEM to be able to put up with what I put up with."
Step 10. Laugh often and loudly.

It seems to me that humility, unlike other virtues, is a virtue that must be practiced in moderation. Respect for others, obedience to authority, not poking one's nose in other people's business, sure, these are good, but "I am a worm and not a man", "I am the chief of sinners", "I am sorry and no good and never will amount to anything"-----when we begin to take humility this far, the kind of humility the Imitation of Christ and other toxic spiritual books call for, we go too far.

The best show of humility is Christ who being God became man so He can save us.....
      Philippians 2:6-9 KJV
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: [7] But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: [8] And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. [9] Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
even Satan and all his angels (princes) didn't see it coming at all love, humility
All creation indeed does confirm what the creator did already , does and will surely do

My late parish priest once announced just before the mass to take the frontiest seat otherwise he wouldn't begin the mass...
I think it's not because of less humility, but rather an act of teamwork... It's a kind of laziness or an unconnectedness if crowds gather in back while the priest does the ritual in the front.

Not sure about Step 7 though: Our Lady was the most humble person ever created - next to Our Lord, but she also knew that she was the greatest. For humility is simply the knowledge and acceptance of what we are. In contrast, Aquinas states that pride is an inordinate love of our own excellence. The Catholic classic "This Tremendous Lover" by Abbot Eugene Boylan states that Our Lady knew she was great, as did Our Lord. In the Magnificat, Mary states that "The Lord has done great things for me and that all generations to come will call her "blessed." Humility is not the same thing as self-deception or false self-deprecation.
The difference is nevertheless very clear. I've known brilliant, accomplished men: some of them were an absolute delight to be around, while others were intolerant and insufferable. As CS Lewis states in Mere Christianity, the mark of humility is that humble men take an interest in you, while the proud demean you whether you are inferior OR greater than them. The universe is all about them because pride essentially means enmity.

the rules were meant for monastic life, complete subservience to the superior, master slave relationship. its not surprising the Monks had attempted to poison him.
Humility is knowing your place in society and not be envious of someone better placed than you. Nobody could explain it better than our Lord, in parable, Luke 14..
this is gnawing at the core of our modern society and more so in US,, sadly arming themselves to teeth.
Thomas Kempis in "imitation of Christ " so much you are in God's Eyes that much you are and no more" in the end that's all that matters.

Without wanting to be preachy, have thought about this exact thing for more than 15 years. Convinced that humility only gets taken advantage of. But in reality even to a person taking advantage of this, you become dearer (maybe exalted). Holding a power to destroy him/her by just letting being silent. It actually drives them crazy.

If we stick our necks out and try to accomplish anything God says shame on you, you lack humility, but if we don't stick our necks out God says, oh, you have buried your God-given talent in the sand. We are literally damned if we do and damned if we don't.

Step 7: Don’t only confess that you’re inferior to others, that other people are better than you, but really believe it in your heart. Start to see everyone else’s virtues as greater than yours, and don’t just say you think that’s the case, but learn to believe it. So you cultivate an ability, instead of judging others as less than you, exalting them above you. That’s the cultivation of real humility. In other words: Don’t just seek the lowest place at the banquet, seek the lowest place in your own eyes.
