Another variable that wasn't mentioned was a Byzantine advisor called Plethon, he was not a Christian at all, he practiced the Hellenic pagan religion and openly at that. Because of this he was extremely unpopular in the Byzantine court, the only reason emperor Konstantinos the eleventh didn't kick him out of the court was because he was a very good diplomat. In one of Plethon's diplomatic trips he met a very wealthy Italian merchant and banker named Lorenzo "The magnificent" di Medici, they because friends pretty fast, in one of their conversations, plethon suggests to Lorenzo to use his wealth to open a school, Lorenzo like the idea and open the medici school which very quickly become one the main centers of the Renaissance!
The argument that the Renaissance "didn't happen" isn't actually that dumb, depending on what you define as "Renaissance". The phenomenon of reconnecting to the classics and having a humanist education (as in based on humanities) mostly involved artists and elites, not so much the vast majority of the population. Furthermore it was a continuation of the trends in the late Middle Ages: cannons, centralization of power and greater sailing expertise were already happening from the 1300s-early 1400s onwards.
