    "What always happens to me is I get a slope here and a bulge here. I don't know what happens....it's just weird!" Great to hear such a talented and experienced carver making the same mistakes as myself. Thanks for another great video Zed. I could watch Deborah carving all day... but the sun is shining on a wintery day in Sydney and I must go and do some myself.

    Hey Zed, this was an absolute pleasure to watch, I love how you don't feel the need to fill the silence and let the artists explain their work at their own pace, I found the video, and Deborahs previous video and your other carving videos, really calming due to the relaxed and natural pace of the discussion.
    It is a joy to watch Deborah work, I thought she has incredible skill with her tools and a real eye for detail. I have purchased a spoon from her Etsy page which I think looks more like a work of art than a spoon! and will be keeping an eye out, hopefully you might get the opportunity to meet up again in the future. I'm also hoping you can start to get back outdoors with the warmer weather and lockdown ending, I have missed your basecamp and bushcraft videos!

Indeed everytime I film a crafts person it's a learning curve for me in terms of improving the quality of the recording each time. Love your work each time I see it. I have to admit to a bit of jealously about all the wonderful people you get to make friends with and who are so generous with their knowledge. You have a talent for finding great makers who are also excellent teachers. Those two talents don't always live in the same person and finding them is a real skill. I hope one day that these craftspeople are treasured by your country like they deserve to be. Also that your work is recognized for the important documentation that it is.

    • @Zedoutdoors
      @Zedoutdoors  3 роки тому

      The connections with all of these makers has happened over many years and i'm genuinely grateful to know each and every one of them. We have many problems here in the UK like most other countries do, but the fact it's a relatively small country means that being able to get around is a lot easier than say in the US, Canada, etc. A sincere thank you as always for watching and for your kind words james, it means a lot ~Peace~

    The clog maker at St Fagans open air museum uses a big blade connected to the chopping log at one end. Uses it to make really controlled, accurate cuts. Much safer than an axe.

    • @Zedoutdoors
      @Zedoutdoors  2 роки тому

      It's called a stock knife and takes lots of skill to use. An axe is much safer and better for spoon carving when you're aware of the proper technique ~Peace~

    Zed, i must complement you on your superb camera-handling and photographic skills. I am aware of the [photographic] difficulty which exists to follow the carver's movements. You actually captured the gist of the movement's purpose, and if you will, the mood; you too, are a master at your craft. I could feel your care and concentration. You made this a very watchable and entertaining video. Thank you so much.

    Do spooncarvers use bandsaws at all for roughing work, in lieu of the hatchet/axe? My brain thrives on making things efficient when possible, not for profit per se, but more to shorten the time factor so I can get to the finer work. Seems that some feel my ways "heretical", but I'm guessing I am not alone ;-)

      @Zedoutdoors  2 роки тому

      There's nothing stopping anyone from using any form of machinery in their carving process. If you look at things on a spectrum, on one end is using solely hand tools, on the other a fully automated CNC machine, you simply choose where you want to sit on that spectrum ~Peace~
