So what is considered mild autism? As the word mild implies, it means there's a "little bit" of autism, per say. So what does that mean? On a gradient, when a child has symptoms, we look at the core symptoms of speech and language delay for example, or difficulty with social referencing and social engagement, social communication and, again, the restricted repertoire of play and repetitive behaviors. So if a child has a little bit of speech delay or some difficulty with speech and language, or a little bit of echolalia or some difficulty with social engagement, or has some repetitive stereotypic behaviors and play which can be redirected easily, you are hitting criteria of autism but the involvement is mild. With the new DSM-IV diagnosis, they actually want you to look at levels of severity. A lot of schools do the CARS, which is the Child Autism Rating Scale and they do have differentiation of mild, moderate, and severe. Mild would really come in that category when you look at symptoms and their severity. Based on that, you can actually say mild autism.
To clarify, the diagnosis of Pervasive Developmental Disorder, not otherwise specified, was often used for kids with what we now say, mild autism. Because they have just a few of the symptoms, they don't classically hit all of the autism criteria, but they have some of these differences that parents can say, for example: covering their ears, or sensitive to sounds, or not picking up in social relationships, not picking up cues, having difficulty understanding jokes, for example, being very literal or what they call poor pragmatics, or having particular fascinations-everything is Thomas the Tank engine. They can be transitioned, but they have particular tendencies which is different from another neurotypically developing child.
A lot of these children do get diagnosed with PDD, not otherwise specified, or mild autism and it's really a matter of degree. I think the important thing is to get formalized testing done so you really know where your child falls in the spectrum, and you have a sense of how impaired your child is, or how little impaired your child is, and then you can compare your child to her or himself so that they'll be measured along their own spectrum, not just with a reference to other children.

Well, congrats. I've never learned to tie my shoes. & I'm 72. I just get the Velcro kind.Well, I can tie my right shoe, but not my left. So, if I had to get tied ones, I made sure, I could get my feet in at the store. Then if they untied, I had to get rid of them & get new ones. That was my biggest gripe about autism. I could do everything else I wanted, just NOT that.

im autistic, and its hard for me. People made fun of me, and even though im sort of a social butterfly, things like tying my shoes, and some aspects of communication is hard for me. I just dont know what to do in arguments. I also had really bad ticks when i was little, such as making noises, screeching, and a weird tendency to hurt myself. I went to therapy, and now things are better.

I have been treated bad by people because my child has autism. At the school they did not want him they fought with me for years by bullying me intimidating me sending false reports about my child so they can make me take my kid out of the school. N.B. the kid is a quiet and good kid not agressive.
They just did not want my child because the child has autism and they see it as problem for them so they did to us the most unkind horrible stuff. Psychological war, putting the kid in separate classroom or outside. People have done to me and him the most horrible stuff just because of autism. That was their excuse. Things i would have never imagined myself to do to anyone. I have met all of human cruelty because of my child s condition. I also entered a relationship with a person wouter van der g who i later realised only wanted to use me for free roof free food and to bring his dad to my country. And all this because his dad gerard van der g and grandma helen van sha were telling him i worth nothing because i give birth to autist kid. All these while i have found job to wouter gave him a place to live for free and cooked for him each day while i even cured an std he got cheating on me with a woman his dad gerard van der ga told him to sleep with. Also wouter van der ga has beaten me on several occasion when he wanted to go out with other women while living in my property becayse as his dad told him i worthed nothing because i have an autist child. When i took wouter to courts for his beatings and the damages to my property he has done, he put a girlfriend of his to call on social services on me on false accusations that my kid eats from the garbages. Imagine we are talking about wouter van der ga a guy who was eating each day at my house fresh food i cooked for him and he was seeing the food was fresh for him and my kid with my money. This van der ga family lived in middelburg until they came in my country on my expenses in my property. To add to this my family mother and father does not let me date anyone or have any friend. My mother never keeps my child while she keeps my sisters children.

When I was 2-3, mom said I would always play by myself all alone under an orange tree. Just sat there, playing with some ants and lined up the rocks, or played cooking with the dirt. When I was in kindergarten, many teachers told me to engage more with friends coz they always found me sat alone in the corner, didnt even bother to play with toys or other kids. I remember I loved to sat alone in the forest nearby my grandma's house every single day just to felt the wind. Up until now, I HATE loud noises, running water, heavy rain, and cant sleep when there is someone talking next to me or in the same room. I have difficulties in falling asleep. Now I realised that my 1year old son is totally just like me

Once, in 3rd grade, a teacher of mine told my mom that I was "in my own world", those were the exact words. I didn't know what that meant, I thought it was something positive like creative or something. So I asked my mom what it meant and she said it means I'm "crazy". And she said it while screaming and looking anxious. It really broke me hearing that. I can't even remember what happened after that. I was always by myself too, and I don't really socialize unless someone talks to me. I didn't really feel alone or "crazy", I just enjoyed my own company I guess, I mean, does that make me crazy? And yeah, many things happened, and now I'm depressed, more socially anxious, self depracating, and have some high levels of procrastination. But I'm proudly autistic now, after years of research about it, I've learned to accept my autistic self and still recovering from other mental problems. I don't blame my mom for shouting at me back then, she just didn't understand me and probably stressed from my narcisstic father (someone that actually affected me negatively until now. But he doesn't affect me much anymore, now that I understand how narcisstic people manipulate.)

One time we went to the park and she grabbed this little girls hand and wanted to play but my daughter was just laughing and had no conversation then the little girl just left and my daughter didn't care because she doesn't know what rejection is she doesn't know when a kid rejects her. I saw this and wanted to cry my little girl just went and play by herself laughing. Greetings from Mexico.

My 4yo son is on waitlist for an assessment. I'm suspecting he's high functioning. Do I worry about his social skill? Yes I wouldn't say no. However I'm also amazed by his determination and high interests in numbers and elevators. Not to mention he loves learning cooking as well. The more I look at it the more I would like.to see it as a trait rather than those "labeling". These people really have some great skills, we the society just need more understanding and accepting different kind of mindset. Now there are people prefer visual learning, tactile learning or audio learning...maybe it's time to develop more new learning method cus human society is changing.

I've never went to a psychologist in my life but I've always been easily distracted and I've always found it extremely hard to make new friends, hold conversations with people I knew from school or university, talking to strangers = almost impossible. It seems like I don't have any interest in small talk or conversating with anyone except few close friends and family. I've always prefered individual rather than team sports, and to work alone if I had to choose between in a group or alone. I've always been fascinated with physics and I like maths as well but I've never had much interest in people in general. Also I don't really understand relationships (even tho I was in a brief one) and hints girls give guys. And it seems as if these things have just been exaggerated as I grow older. Should I worry about any of this ? I never actually cared, I got this far, so it's not debilitating or anything.

But equally important, i.m.o., is not only to concentrate on diagnosis by children, but also to diagnose them again in say 5 and 10 years. And at that time see how many of them score where on the spectrum and how severe on typical parts on the spectrum.
What seems to be happening at the moment, at least in some institutes, is overdiagnosis as opposed to a history (talking 30 to 50 years back) of underdiagnosis or no diagnosis at all, for the ages 0-5.
By re-diagnosing children with mild or medium autism 5 years later we will have a better indication of the validity of the first diagnosis and, in addition, a better indication of how and where to place them in primary / secondary school. And re-diagnosing them again 5 (in total 10) years later we can re-evaluate the validity of the first two diagnoses and get a good indication of how to roadmap them through puberty and associated social behavior.
As a 60 year ASD (asperger) none of this was available or known in my youth. I'm so happy and glad that all this knowledge is available now, and a diagnose really helps children and parents putting themselfs in perspective and helping these young adults in finding a nice place in life.

My little brother probably has mild autism and so have pretty much all my brothers. I have moderate autism and one or maybe two (I have 4 older brothers with autism and my little brother is going through testing and I was diagnosed with level 2 'moderate' autism) and I can clearly see how different I am compared to my other brothers. Everyone else can hold a proper conversation and ask people how they are doing, etc, etc but me and one of my brothers can't, we go straight back to our special interests, mine being birds. They can all also talk to people they don't know but I can't. They don't have repetitive behaviours but I have phrases, sentences, tunes, songs, movements which I do all the time.

Autism is about if you can relate to others you can be verbal and get on yet not relate at all, yet you can be non verbal and relate more to someone. One is a severe learning disability with mild autism, one is very autistic with little or no learning disability.

Watching these videos after having another emotional breakdown after finally calming my toddler after his meltdown. Im 100 percent sure he is autistic. He just turned 2 and it breaks my heart. He has these melt down daily and its so hard. He bites his self, head butts things hard, kicks ect. He tip toe walks, the smallest things upset him, he doesn't talk yet, he only plays with things that are round or spin. If he has a car he flips it and spins the wheel stuff like that. He also has 3 tics he does with his hands and fingers all day long. He spins on circles. Im worried about him as ive never dealt with autism before and I just want a happy healthy child but when he gets these episodes when he is upset I feel hopeless. Im looking into a specialist to get him diagnosed and some help. I have 2 older boys so I no this is more than just toddler things.

I did have everything too mention. However my mom didn’t note enough of what I did, and I never was given a test ever in my whole life a test for Autism. And I’m now 51. And a Social worker feels I have Autism. I just want a test to prove that I in fact do have Autism and I’m 51. Where do I go, the social worker I see, she sent me to a doctor but he came up with Social Communication Disorder and OCD but I’m not one with rituals like OCD people like turning the light off 10 times every time I touch it. In fact I have no OCD like that, my OCD is mental they say, I have repetitive thoughts and those thoughts come out of my mouth a lot of the time so I speak them. I know the people whom make these videos read their comments maybe you can help me with finding the right doctors to get a diagnosis at 51. And Yes I’m Female too.

If it's not seriously affecting the person's life, why put this label on them at all? Why can't they be, instead of "A person with mild autism", "A person who has difficulty with social interactions and/or intense interest in a few subjects and/or a person who can find noisy or chaotic environments stressful"? We all have our weaknesses and difficulties in life. Why does every deviation from "the norm" have to be a disorder?

The idea behind this that there's a default neurological pattern in people's brains that gives rise to autistic symptoms and this hypothetical pattern is called autism. As far as I'm concerned, this neurological pattern is yet to be proven for a fact and the symptoms could be caused by anything else. The more they research this, the more symptoms and people end up fitting the category. I'm not an expert though, so I could be misunderstanding this completely (I hope not).

Even so called "Mild autism" can have a significant affect on a person's ability to function. In fact, I find very cases of autism to really be mild. It might seem mild compared to someone who's Profoundy affected, an autisic person who can succeed really well in life can suddenly be a hit with depression whichcan cause so many problems.

Agreed. They use a bunch of functioning labels and salsa spiciness levels to describe it, which just puts divides in the community, invalidates people's needs, and can be inaccurate, since support needs can vary in each autistic trait.

Be careful whom you herd under this diagnosis. It is constantly being expanded to include more and more people. We have seen this week alone five children diagnosed with autism who are PERFECTLY normal. Being a little different is not a diagnostic criteria for autism. Be wary, skeptical, and afraid of people who want to label you very quickly. it either means they have no comprehension of the real issue, or they are too concerned with fitting you into their schemas that they will do so at any cost. This issue makes me very sad. Surely there are folks on this spectrum, but simply reading the insight many of you have in your comments tells me you're not on that spectrum. CL, M.D.

my child is 5 yrs old.. has a speech delay.. he start talking just when he was 4 1/2 yrs old.. now he can speak but its hard to communicate with him because he doesn't pay attention. you need to get his attention first before you can talk to him. and he doesn't look at you directly. he look on different things around him. he enjoy reading and writing .. when he write he don't want any help.. he do others things normally aside from doing his pupu on the toilet.. he is still under training on making it on the toilet.. sometimes he can tell that he wants to make pupu but there are also times that he already made it before he tells.. he is very active in school he keeps on standing but he can also sit down and listen to his teacher.. at home he's behave as long as his older brother don't bother him.. is it possible signs of adhd or a autism??

I'm socially fluent, and can talk to many people. I'm confident and can talk just so easily. I'm very literal...like if I say I won't lie to you then I won't. Like I literally won't?! Hard to explain.
But I had a brain tumor, I feel like that could recreate some possibly even similar symptoms. Like for example, i don't hold down any friendships for longgggg periods of time. However I notice that changing...its becoming less and less each year I can notice it. I really don't think I have mild autism. Even though some symptoms show. I think it's just me

I got diagnosed with mild autism last year and I really don't agree with the diagnosis; I have no sensory issues and i understand social ques , but I just can't connect with people I'm very confused by this cause I was originally diagnosed with bpd than mild autism but honestly I had so much anxiety around others as a child I never got the chance to make friends myself out of fear or rejection. It's been bothering me lately cause the only symptom I had was lack of ability to approach people which is typically out of fear , and possibly being focused on only one interest . My parents told me they don't want me to be borderline cause I'm not manipulative and all that ... It pisses me off when I go to groups to learn social skills when I already know all of it so I started to question it all ...

I'd guess the "spectrum" of Autism is usually linked to intelligence, but not always. Believe it or not you can have severe Autism (a complete detachment from social relationships and the outside world; no social skills etc.) and still have high IQ. You can have milder autism, with low IQ too.
In my own case I have milder autism coupled with average IQ.
