    I plan to keep bees and travel as much as possible. Absolutely agree. Proper planning enables travel….thanks for sharing Natalee!! Another great video!

    lol just ask Chuck Cook, he keeps bees and he's a pilot! And oh the shoty brood pattern may be caused by the VSH traits because the bees aggressively upcap bad brood.

    Beetles haven't been bad here this year probably cause it's been a pretty dry summer. Most of my hives are in full sun, but i do have a few in the shade and the beetles do seem worse. I think genetics play a role in controlling them as well. I've had hives in the past that were strong and didn't control them, didn't see them chase them either. I like when i pop the lid and the bees go after them and grab them, makes me think of a cat playing with a toy. It's looking like the goldenrod is gonna be a couple weeks early this year, the heads are already starting to turn yellow.

    Mom to the rescue again and I'll bet your dad does an epic legendary job😂 it's a pity VHS queens aren't available in new Zealand, like a few breeds you guys have, Carniolan bees were hard enough to get in here and it's still difficult to source them in the lower south island and expensive 😬 one nuc is $450 bucks including shipping from the north island 😬 and people wonder why beekeeping in new Zealand is dropping small and sideline beekeepers in droves, that's partially why. It's probably the most expensive country to keep bee's right now 🙄 great video 👍

      That’s a crazy price on a nuc!

      @@dsummerscm 😬 tell me about it, unfortunately this manuka honey nonsense 🙄has booted the prices through the roof with some breeders because greedy idiots who think they can do a night class in basic beekeeping and make thousands of dollars selling a jar of silver bullet to frightened people with money who are terrified of getting a cold. Thankfully the butt has dropped right out of manuka now because warehouses are bursting to the gutters with drums of the stuff but still some breeders haven't read the papers lately that people are quitting beekeeping in droves, article about that in the news this morning too😂 I've actually found another breeder who will sell me wintered queens at 60 bucks a pop mated and marked with attendants which is much more sensible thank goodness that's about what we pay in Otago for Dunedin queens👍

    Have you tested any hives for mites to compare VSH hive mite counts to the regular queen hives?

    • @JamesLeesBees
      @JamesLeesBees Місяць тому +1

      There are no direct correlations. It is all over the map.
      However, more consistently I have observed VSH bees with counts that would otherwise be at threshold for treatment in the wash, but a brood assay tells an entirely different story.

    I just treated with formic and spot checked brood when I removed it and 1 hive didnt have a good pattern, is it a good time after treatment to evaluate? I have some extra nucs

    • @dsummerscm
      @dsummerscm Місяць тому +1

      Probably not a good time frame. Formic can be rough on the colony. Would probably give it a little bit. Dawn (Natalee’s Mom)

      Make sure it is completely covered in honey. It also helps to look directly into sunlight. Hope it works well for you! Dawn (Natalee’s Mom)
