  • Hello :)
This is the requested transcription I did of the Joe Bonamassa song "I Gave Up Everything For You, 'Cept the Blues" from his 2014 album "Different Shades of Blues". The bass player was either Carmine Rojas, or
Michael Rhodes. This transcription can be found at www.muzento.com under Intermediate - Songs.
I enjoyed transcribing this one. It's a rockin' blues tune with just a hint of some "jazz" lines. I have a feeling who ever played bass on this track has some jazz in their vocabulary as there are some "enclosures" and use of "chromatic" notes that sound jazzy to me.
It made me wonder if I could improvise a rock blues bass line in the same style as what he did. It's pretty tough to do! I can walk a blues, but to "rock" a blues...hmmm. I haven't practiced that very much. So I think I'm going to add it to my improvising practice session ;)
There a lot of different ways one could play this song and I may have forgotten which way I played it when I was notating the TAB. My apologies if the TAB and the way I play it in the video are not the same in some spots. Think of it as having a choice of how to play it :)
I discovered when I was practicing with a drum track (which I often do) that this makes for a really good play along and study. Since it's a blues, it's easy to hear the changes, and there's some good lines and rhythms to have under your fingers.
The Bass/Drum Play Along can be found here - • I Gave Up Everything f...
This is fun to play along with, I hope you enjoy it too :)
Don't forget to like and subscribe and thanks for watching :)

Hey Greg, Thanks for doing this Joe Bonamassa blues song and for doing a separate bass/drum play along video. I love Joe Bonamassa songs. This one is a lot of fun to play. I found the phrases with multiple successive triplets a little tricky to nail. The slide up from the D (5th fret on the A string) to the D (12th fet on the D string) followed immediately by the 7 to 9 slur on the A string is challenging as well. Those are both good things to practice.🙂

Hi Bob, I'm really glad you like this one, and I'm really liking the way you're practicing. Finding the weak spots and working on them is an excellent way to practice. Keep it up :)
