I'm so sorry to hear the sad news, John will be missed amongst the community, his videos were fantastic and he had such a wealth of knowledge. Such a sad loss, thoughts are with his family. RIP
I am so sorry to hear of John's passing. It was such a shock. He will be sadly missed by all his channel followers. Such a knowledgeable and modest gentleman. My sincere condolences to his family and friends 💔
I’m so sorry to hear of John’s passing. He was a kind and gentle man with whom I had the great pleasure of exchanging stamps. I don’t ill miss him and always remember him.
So sorry to hear of John's passing. His enthusiasm was inspiring, and he was a great ornament to the philatelic community on UA-cam. My sympathies to his loved ones.
Chris Sahar here - John's channel brought me special joy as I believe I was one of the first to send him stamps from the US in response to seeing one of his episodes. John generously reciprocated and sent a few more. This sparked others to send some -- some far more generous than I was. Excellent presenter and wonderful philatelist. Judging from his channel he seemed like a lovely guy and father!
So sad to hear of your dad’s passing. Thank you for sharing this difficult news with us. Heartfelt condolences to you and your family. He will be missed among our wonderful stamp community. I had gained so much knowledge about GB stamps by watching his videos since I’ve gotten back into my stamp collecting in 2020.
The passing of John is such sad news. I’ve been watching his videos since 2011 and just loved his passion for stamps. John’s videos are full of great information and being a Machin collector myself, I found John to be a great helper in building and understanding my collection. After watching this last episode I immediately went on line looking for Czeslaw Slania’s SG2078 1999 £1 large Machin. Thankfully I found one and it will always remind me of.:- ‘John Collects Stamps’. Please keep John’s videos on UA-cam for a while longer because I’m sure I’ve missed a few of them along the way. RIP John.
Rest easy, kind sir. Every time I look at a Machin I will think of you and your videos fondly. Thank you for keeping me company while I worked on my collection. Bless you and your family.
What a wonderful person that infected his passion of stamps with everyone. I often would watch his videos during my hectic day while eating my lunch - that always lifted a tough day - thank you for sharing your stamps and thoughts - you have left a permanent footprint on the many different generations that will carry your torch.
One of my top five stamp collectors is gone, my wife and I enjoyed John so much, opened up a whole new adventure in collecting for us. Our condolences to John's family. Thank you John.
Truly sorry to hear of John’s passing. A great loss for the philatelic community. Loved his passion and ethusiasm. Sincerest condolonces to his family and friends.
Slania. Another great episode John, very enjoyable. I especially like the Maritime Heritage and Pillar Boxes sets. I collect Faroe Islands and as you noted, Slania has engraved a lot of their issues and they are all spectacular. I had a wonderful trip to London last week and my hosts commented that I picked the right week in regards to the weather; every day was perfect. My trip(s) to Stanley Gibbons were a highlight for me.
Hi John, I am trying to think what type of tools will be able to engrave those minute lines. Absolutely beautiful! Thanks for showing us the magnificent stamps and for the interesting video. The stamps are too beautiful not to add SLANIA. 😊
I only relatively recently started to watch this channel and obviously don’t know John at all, but he seemed like a genuinely interesting man, with lots of general knowledge and an obvious passion for stamp collecting. Very sorry to hear of his passing.
Thanks John for this episode, you've opened my eyes to these issues. I had to look through my albums to see if i had these sets. I'm also looking through the S.G. Catalogue for other issues he did. Looking forward to seeing what's in that package which was a stamp collection in itself.
Another interesting video. I was unfamiliar with the engraver Slania. Of course I like the mail carriages and Pillar boxes as a mailman. Thanks for the knowledge
My condolonces on your loss of your dad. I lost my mother recently. So i know how you feel. He will be missed alot. Best regards from james in scotland. Take care of yourselves.
John, an other great video. I had not realized that Czeslaw Slania had engraved so many British Stamps. The set with the Ships would be a great addition to my collection especially the one with Henry VIII for my collection of British Monarchs, and the ones of Lords Fisher and Cunningham for my Churchill related collection.
Мне, очень жаль, что не стало хорошего человека и филателиста, который удивлял нас своими рассказами про марки. Я с большим удовольствием и интересом смотрел видео Джона. Нам всем будет не хватать его. Мы молимся, за его душу.
I didn't realise either until I discovered an article a few weeks ago. I knew about the Machins and the Mail Coaches, but not the others. They are lovely stamps.
Great show about SLANIA's UK engraved postage stamps..... Do you have Shorts Slania book? And I see you're almost up to 1000 subscribers ! Have fun with stamp collecting !
Czeslaw Slania (1921-2005) was a renowned Polish-born engraver who achieved international recognition for his exceptional skills in stamp engraving. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest stamp engravers in history. Slania was born on October 22, 1921, in the town of Bromberg (now Bydgoszcz) in Poland. He displayed an early talent for art and pursued his passion for engraving. After World War II, Slania studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Krakow, Poland. In 1948, Slania began his career as a stamp engraver for the Polish State Printing Works. His talent and craftsmanship quickly gained attention, and he became known for his extraordinary precision and attention to detail. Over his career spanning more than 50 years, Slania engraved stamps for numerous countries around the world, including Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Great Britain, the United States, Australia, and many others. His engravings covered a wide range of subjects, including historical figures, cultural icons, wildlife, and landmarks. Slania's engraving technique was characterized by its remarkable intricacy and the ability to capture even the finest details. He employed line engraving, a traditional method that involves etching lines onto a metal plate, allowing for exquisite precision and shading effects. Slania's work earned him widespread acclaim and numerous awards, including the title of "Court Engraver" in Sweden. He also held the Guinness World Record for the most postage stamps engraved by an individual, with over 1,000 different stamp designs to his name. Czeslaw Slania's contributions to stamp engraving elevated the art form and left an indelible mark on the philatelic world. His engravings continue to be highly sought after by collectors and are cherished for their exceptional craftsmanship and artistic beauty.
SLANIA! Thank you for making this excellent video John, made me realise I should think more about the artist, not just the printers that are featured so dominantly in the catalogues.
There seems to have been a lot of discussion about SLANIA over the past year or so, I suppose because of the centennial of his birth. Engraving on the whole produces absolutely beautiful stamps.
