You're not going to get 5V from tapping two conductors together. The knock sensor is a piezoelectric crystal - the voltage is created by applying mechanical strain to the crystal. The reason the multimeter can't read DC resistance of the crystal is its equivalent circuit looks like a capacitor. You should however be able to use the capacitor test function to read something. If the characteristic impedance is published or measured from a known working unit then an oscilloscope can be used to properly test if the knock sensor is good. An LCR meter might get you close enough for pass-fail.
Not too expensive? Depends on the car, sure I can get cheap ones from Amazon or Rockauto but OEM sensors for my 2001 Lexus are almost 200$ each, still! I wouldn’t recommend just buying them even if they were cheap throwing parts at a car isn’t t fixing it.
Hello I am trying to locate the knock sensor on a 2014 kia Rio ex. What kia engine is exactly like the rio. Can not find a repair manual for the 2014 kia Rio. Is the Forte the same.?
For anyone actually wanting to know how to test one measure each contacts resistance to the steel/brass ring, if it reads anything its clearly faulty & needs replacing.
i just bought a nippon denso toyota 89615-20090 89615-06010 knock sensor for a 2008 toyota matrix, should it read ohms if its good, the old one didnt read anything , wondering if my new one is bad also as it doesnt read ohms on any scale? thanks
You forget to say in the voltmeter we have to use the AV scale to see the voltage produced by the sensor. However it was a good video... You earn my like, egghead ;v

Tapping it like that will break the crystals inside and ruin it! By By $100.00 sensor! You hook it to a scope while it is still on the car and just run the engine. It will produce a pattern on the scope if it is good!
You need an osiliscope to test it out it in a vice hit vice with hammer and watch the wave form in frequency setting check manufacturer info for what frequency it should be like Toyota for example 7
If you have no clue about a knock sensor then don't do a video on how to test it. First, knock sensor output voltage is AC not DC, second, you should put the sensor on a vise and hit the vise instead of hitting the sensor itself. If I were you, I would delete this video and do another proper one.
I hung one these on my front door and if someone knocks i dont want talk to i wont answer. And ill tell them my knock sensor was broken i didnt hear them🙄
Can confirm Knock in engine if P Code is existent or not? Perhaps knock may be normal in Hyundai and Castrol Oil Change fixed issue actually? Mine much quieter after Castrol:)

The metal spanner might induce small voltage. try knocking with something non-metallic.

Good demonstrates the test very well, easy to understand.

If you set your meter on ohms and tap the knock sensor do you get a reading?
Knock sensor testing proses very excellent thank you so much sir

Knock sensor produces AC Voltage NOT DC
thanks

You will break the crystals by tapping it but stick it to a head hitting 6000 r/m and it survives. lol
$100?!!! Forget it. Sell the car!
Your setting on Ohms will only read up to 2K. You should set it to 2M!
ya I test mine 560K
Super explication. Bravo!!!
Don't they produce ac voltage
wrong. they produce AC voltage
Did the noise ever come back after you all did the oil change and put the thicker oil in?
Ya'll did this in a video back in March.

yep.never hit the sensor
You are right..
132k views... 733k subs... ...and they don't know anything. 😥 The way of the world now days.
Also when testing the ohms you put red on terminal 1 and black on the ground to get an ohm reading of usually between 532-588 ohms.
Well AC is just a little higher than DC, but basically it’s same

I have one wire only:(
Don't work for a Lexus knock sensor
It's producing an AC signal, use an Oszi and not a slow a$$ multimeter, it's response time is much too low.
Nothing to learn in this vid
😁👍👍
