    Nice bit of kit that lads ! UV has been used to kill bacteria for many years, quite commonly in koi ponds etc, they have UV lights within the filter housings to keep the water clear, and free of algae !

    First came across this technology years ago when I was installing a pilot waste water treatment plant at the giant Davyhulme waste water plant in Manchester. Now this is standard practice across all water treatment plants

    Great video guys, and yes there's going to be a big market here for someone. I like the emphasis on safety - it's super important that no-one can come into contact with UV-C light.

    • @efixx
      @efixx  3 роки тому +1

      Echo your comment on safety. The market is flooded with products which don't pay attention to the challenges of working with UV-C.

    UVC tubes have been used in the marine industry for years for potable water on ships .. its a great idea, esp in office spaces regardless of the pandemic.. just a simple cold spreads in no time.. i'm surprised they haven't made a T5 version to fit under kitchen units, good sales ploy for the domestic market.. disinfect while you're out .. Philips, i want royalties if you do haha

      Big Clovis has done a lot of videos on the topic namely it started I think with the one where he talked about the lighting display in a store that caused severe sunburn and welders sand Eye.

    • @warrmr
      @warrmr 3 роки тому +1

      Having now watched the video those Luminaires at the end of the video look like the stuff of nightmares. Good that you mentioned safety interlocks and automatic monitoring but it still worries me that there could possibly be "Unauthorised resellers" that install this stuff without the care that Phillips intended.
      Also those little white ceiling mounted doodads, do you not think they would be worth while inside of a HVAC duct to disinfect the air as it is circulated around the office space, as the ones in the video seem to do a localised area and we all know who well a cold circulates around the office thanks to HVAC.

    • @imark7777777
      @imark7777777 3 роки тому

      @@warrmr they do make HVAC units, and some places have them installed. but remember nobody wants to sit by the air intake because "that's bad" so I've been to businesses that I think have had their air circulation system turned off. Stores that were abnormally warm or abnormally cold for the time of year and outside temperature.
      Yeah the scary thing is you put "UV" into Amazon or eBay and you can get whatever you want. On top of that the distinction between the different levels of UV is blurred so you could get a cheap knock off black light UV and think you're safe and then get the real deal and get burned thinking it's safe. You can either get something that does nothing but a placebo (UV phone light filter) or you can get something that is very dangerous to handle that looks safe (Random UV tube off eBay).

    I feel like the end goal is new buildings will just have AC with UVC filtering built in the same way they have HEPA filters. As buildings get more air tight for energy efficiency reasons forced air ventilation will be the way forward so it naturally makes sense. Older leaky buildings air filtration doesn't make sense but UVC cabinets for disinfection are already used in conjunction with steam ovens in places like dentists and hospitals across the world.

      Great input - Thanks 🙏

  • @imark7777777
    @imark7777777 3 роки тому

    The only problem with UVC light is everybody thinks it’s UV light like black lights to the point where we have both products marketing black lights as disinfecting when they’re not and UVc lights as black lights very dangerous one doesn’t work and one gives you severe sunburns and welders Eye.
    Snazzy labs just reviewed the UV disinfecting attachment for your phone that turns your phones light into a fancy black light. But I’m sure they’re raking in the dough until somebody gets sick and Sue’s them.
    There also needs to be more talk about what UVC cannot come in contact with as from my research It’s not great for fabrics and color some dies which means it’s not necessarily good for a quilt show even though we had proponents in the quilters group wanting it and at the time the market was not readily available with safe options.

    In this current climate it's good to see products coming to help with sterilization. Are there particular tests that would need to be carried out daily/weekly/monthly to ensure they are still working correctly ?

    • @efixx
      @efixx  3 роки тому +2

      Would need some checks - lamps last for around 9000 hours - but as with all lighting systems - dust is the biggest cause of light output loss - so get the duster ready - but switch off first.

    Presumably a glass mirror reflecting the UV-C light would be fine as the glasswork would block the UV-C!

    • @efixx
      @efixx  3 роки тому

      Good question - we’d have to double check this as it would depend upon they type of glass the mirror is made from.

      With the scarcity florissant fixtures it’s sort of makes it safer as you can’t accidentally swap the bulb out because it looks pretty in a regular lamp.
