I love how friendly all the people are when they see the camera. They are smiling at us. And while many of them were probably very poor, they all have a certain dignity.
I lived and worked in Holland (vogelenzang) for 3 months when I was 20yrs old back in 1994, on a tulip farm and met some fabulous Dutch people and had a great time! Dank je!! Love from UK 🇬🇧 ❤
Echt ontzettend mooie beelden! Alleen het besef dat veel mensen die we op deze beelden zien waarschijnlijk in de oorlog gepakt zijn of wat dan ook vindt ik echt erg.

I was born in London and used go for walks around what was the old Jewish East End. Most had moved to more affluent areas but you would occasionally see an old faded sign in Hebrew. This video reminds me of that and is wonderful to see such a precious record of a world which was soon to disappear. It is also very touching. As I watch this I will close my mind to what happened later to this community. My family, who are Gentiles by the way and at one time very poor, received great kindness and generosity from the Jewish community in London in the early 1900s. God bless them.
This old Jewish quarter is completly demolished, it,s inhabitants gassed in Germany. Now the Stopera, a big concrete block housing the Amsterdam Opera, stands on the place where these people once lived Last houses demolished around 1978. It,s all gone, a deep deep shame for Amsterdam, but never spoken about.

Being English, my family were spared having to witness that, although my father saw it at first hand when he was one of the first troops to arrive at Belsen when it was liberated. His friend suffered a nervous breakdown later in life due to what he witnessed. For hundreds of years the Jews had been settled in Holland which provided a refuge for them after their expulsion from Spain and Portugal and also England - we expelled them in 1290 and they were only readmitted in the 1650s when a Menassah Ben Israel, a rabbi from Amsterdam, asked Oliver Cromwell to allow his people to return. I think Holland has a lot to be proud of and the Dutch people are widely admired for their friendliness and compassion. That Jewish community would still have been living safely in Holland if it hadn’t been for circumstances out of Holland’s control. The Jewish people I know regard Holland with gratitude, whereas one or two other European countries are not viewed as favourably. My best wishes to you, Dick.

Some indeed helped the Jews escape the nazi regime but the Amsterdam police got a written letter of thank you by Himmler himself for the meticulous administration of the Jewish inhabitants, they rounded them up without much effort. This is what I mean by the shame that rests on Amsterdam and the Netherlands. It,s all in the past now and I,m glad the Jewish people forgave us. I,ve been to Israël and took a good look around. It,s good to know this will never ever happen again, they have a proud people and a proud nation. Peace Brother!

The Vichy government in France had its notorious Milice, and Britain had Oswald Mosley and his Blackshirts. People collaborate for all sorts of reasons - absolute loyalty to obeying instructions, fear, hoping for advancement, hopes that the incoming regime will free them from their existing one, political ideology/bigotry. Every country in the world would have had its collaborators. Looking at it from a British viewpoint, Holland never springs to mind when oppression of the Jews is mentioned. I have had a number of Jewish friends and their resentment is directed at certain countries in Eastern Europe. Anyway, that time has gone and, thank goodness, we didn’t live through it. Being English, we have “baggage” of our own with Ireland and the Empire, but we shouldn’t carry the guilt for the crimes of a minority from the past. So, be pleased to be Dutch, Dick. Het is raar om te denken dat over 100 of 150 jaar iemand ook naar onze beelden kijkt vanuit Mars ofzo, en bij zich zelf denkt, wat een mooie beelden van vergane tijden.
Prachtige opnamen, fijn dat techniek toch ook wel voordelen heeft. Waarschijnlijk heb je er veel tijd in gestoken. Dit materiaal is goud waard. Geschiedenis is belangrijk; het vertelt ons hoe de wereld was, waar we vandaan komen, hoe dingen zijn veranderd. Cultureel erfgoed. Bedankt🙏🏻🌹

Looking at this amazing footage makes me wonder who these people where ! And many of them would have lost there lives only 13 years later in WW2... so sad seeing how happy everyone was, I wish I could know more about these people ! Stunning it really makes you think.
Begrijp niet waarom, maar ik krijg altijd een nostalgisch gevoel van dit soort oude beelden, met die rustige muziek en de mensen van die tijd. Nostalgisch, terwijl ik het natuurlijk nooit heb meegemaakt.
Toch maar het begrip nostalgie nog eens opzoeken in de dikke van dale. Wat u hier beschrijft is niets meer en niets minder dan pure nostalgie naar het verleden.

Blijft toch een soort van bizar om beelden van bijna 100 jaar terug te zien. Vraag me dan ook gelijk of wat de grootste verschillen tussen ons en de mensen over 100 jaar zullen zijn.
Als de bevolkingsgroei zo doorzet is er nog voedsel voor 20 jaar. Daarna wordt het heel spannend wat er gaat gebeuren, misschien het recht van de sterkste.
Niets, want de mens van tegenwoordig heeft niets geleerd van het verleden en de mens van de toekomst is ons en ons verleden ook allang weer vergeten. Dat is de conclusie die ik hier kan trekken uit menig reactie.

Answering the question mark at 0,19. This is the Roode Leeuwengang (corridor).When the camera turns downwards you are looking at the house synagogue which had an entrance at the other side of the building. You can see the Star of David carved in stone. That would be the Valkenburgerstraat. The way trough is on the right side in the back. These houses were build around 1600 and taken down in 1930. A lot of other buildings were taken down as well due to creating the entrance of the IJtunnel late 50’s early 60’s.

Als er iemand hun toen had gezegd. Over 100 jaar, dan bekijken mensen dit filmpje vanaf hun telefoon. Een telefoon waar we alles mee doen. Bankzaken regelen. Foto's maken. Pizza bestellen. Mails versturen. Spelletjes spelen. Boodschappen doen. Etc.
Als hen toen was gezegd dat ze zo'n 16 jaar later door hun eigen Amsterdamse politie opgepakt zouden worden om naar een kamp te worden gebracht en dat de enkeling die dat overleefde anderen in hun huis zagen wonen èn een naheffing van de belastingdienst kregen...... daar kan geen telefoon tegenop.
@@narvul Voor de weinigen die de slachting überhaupt hebben overleefd, moet het treurig zijn geweest om de staat hun eigen wijk aan te treffen na hun barre terugkomst. De gehele Jodenbuurt met haar karakteristieke panden is tijdens de Hongerwinter ontdaan van al het houtwerk, houtroof en zulke logischerwijs. Na de bevrijding is de hele vervallen wijk ook met de grond gelijk gemaakt.
Ja, zo verwend zijn de NL´rs nu. Ze beseffen het alleen niet en de meesten krijgen al die luxe in hun schoot geworpen. Tegen jou zeg ik, over 100 jaar kijken ze op Mars naar jouw filmpjes, geprojecteerd in de ogen. Smartphones bestaan niet meer, alles gaat via een geïmplanteerde chip. Geloof je dat?
Gruwelijke armoede maar toch mooi om dit te zien, ik vind dit echt ontroerend. Verreweg de meeste mensen in dit filmpje zullen in de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn vermoord; dat kan niet anders als je naar de statistieken kijkt :((

The macabre (and weirdly beautiful) thing with these remade videos is that all those people have passed away.. Chances are that most of them here did not long after this footage due to the holocaust. It's like seeing ghosts, which is kind of unique.
Every time i watch these old recordings of people, i can only imagine what they were thinking when they saw someone using a weird contraption... They didn't even know what TV was

Klopt. Maar het moet nog altijd een verademing zijn geweest in vergelijking met de miezerige levenswijze van gesegregeerde Joden die in de Joodse wijken - eerder getto’s - in Polen, de Oekraïne, Rusland etc hun heil moesten zoeken.
Ook grappig om te beseffen dat die oudere dames in het filmpje ergens rond 1850-1860 geboren zijn. En dus in leven waren tijdens de Amerikaanse burgeroorlog.
Ik ben onder de indruk van de levendigheid die kleur toevoegt aan deze beelden. Zwart-wit foto’s creëren een soort afstand alsof mensen toen in een andere wereld leefden. Nu kijk je recht in het leven van mensen die bijna honderd jaar geleden leefden. Geweldig.
Juf Connie u heeft zeker gelijk. Ik ben (nog maar) 30 jaar en kan me niet voorstellen hoe mijn opa en opoe hebben geleefd in die tijd net voor de eerste oorlog. Maar ook mijn ouders, ons pap in de late jaren 50 geboren en ons mam in de eerste jaren 60. Heerlijk om dit te zien. Afvragend hoe de zwart-wit fotos/opnames er uit zouden zien in kleur is dit een perfect antwoord 🙂
@A- ID mijn overgrootmoeder was geboren in 1882, mijn grootmoeder in 1923. Dus vandaar dat dit het gevoelsmatig niet lang geleden vind. Zeker niet als je bekijkt hoe lang wij al op deze aarde rondlopen ;)

I think you have bit a misguided view of the Dutch, they don't care about foreighners or whatever as long as their way of life is not threatend. You just see the surface, underneath that lacquer the Dutch are not that nice.I love their being direct in communication and their discipline, they achieved a lot, but since the Netherlands has been importing more people it hasn't been a good thing between the different groups, lot of tension, just like in Britain. What part are you from in Britain?

Als ik dit zie ben ik blij met de vooruitgang die we geboekt hebben. Als ik de tanden van die jongen zie, de huizen zie en bedenk wat voor vocht problemen ze wel niet gehad moeten hebben en het werk wat volgens mij zeer beperkt was.. Mooie beelden! Een reis terug in de tijd. Als die mensen toen wisten dat wij een honderd jaar later dit nog bekijken op onze telefoon...
Blijft toch een soort van bizar om beelden van bijna 100 jaar terug te zien. Vraag me dan ook gelijk of wat de grootste verschillen tussen ons en de mensen over 100 jaar zullen zijn.
Dat zijn we allemaal dood.
Als de bevolkingsgroei zo doorzet is er nog voedsel voor 20 jaar. Daarna wordt het heel spannend wat er gaat gebeuren, misschien het recht van de sterkste.
Niets, want de mens van tegenwoordig heeft niets geleerd van het verleden en de mens van de toekomst is ons en ons verleden ook allang weer vergeten. Dat is de conclusie die ik hier kan trekken uit menig reactie.

After looking at the deplorable condition of the city in the 20th century, even after all that looted wealth accumulated from the colonialization, one can imagine why the Dutch decided to eat their prime minister.
Answering the question mark at 0,19. This is the Roode Leeuwengang (corridor).When the camera turns downwards you are looking at the house synagogue which had an entrance at the other side of the building. You can see the Star of David carved in stone. That would be the Valkenburgerstraat. The way trough is on the right side in the back. These houses were build around 1600 and taken down in 1930. A lot of other buildings were taken down as well due to creating the entrance of the IJtunnel late 50’s early 60’s.

Als er iemand hun toen had gezegd. Over 100 jaar, dan bekijken mensen dit filmpje vanaf hun telefoon. Een telefoon waar we alles mee doen. Bankzaken regelen. Foto's maken. Pizza bestellen. Mails versturen. Spelletjes spelen. Boodschappen doen. Etc.
Ze hadden je de gracht ingegooid ? Achterna ? Zeggende die is wappie / mesjogge 😂
Ik ben zo benieuwd wat voor veranderingen over 100 zal zijn in technologie enz..
Als hen toen was gezegd dat ze zo'n 16 jaar later door hun eigen Amsterdamse politie opgepakt zouden worden om naar een kamp te worden gebracht en dat de enkeling die dat overleefde anderen in hun huis zagen wonen èn een naheffing van de belastingdienst kregen...... daar kan geen telefoon tegenop.
@@narvul Voor de weinigen die de slachting überhaupt hebben overleefd, moet het treurig zijn geweest om de staat hun eigen wijk aan te treffen na hun barre terugkomst. De gehele Jodenbuurt met haar karakteristieke panden is tijdens de Hongerwinter ontdaan van al het houtwerk, houtroof en zulke logischerwijs. Na de bevrijding is de hele vervallen wijk ook met de grond gelijk gemaakt.
Ja, zo verwend zijn de NL´rs nu. Ze beseffen het alleen niet en de meesten krijgen al die luxe in hun schoot geworpen. Tegen jou zeg ik, over 100 jaar kijken ze op Mars naar jouw filmpjes, geprojecteerd in de ogen. Smartphones bestaan niet meer, alles gaat via een geïmplanteerde chip. Geloof je dat?

Gruwelijke armoede maar toch mooi om dit te zien, ik vind dit echt ontroerend. Verreweg de meeste mensen in dit filmpje zullen in de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn vermoord; dat kan niet anders als je naar de statistieken kijkt :((

Prachtige beelden, het is wel gek om te beseffen dat er amper mensen zijn die nog leven uit die tijd. Iedereen in dit filmpje is al lang heengegaan.
Ook grappig om te beseffen dat die oudere dames in het filmpje ergens rond 1850-1860 geboren zijn. En dus in leven waren tijdens de Amerikaanse burgeroorlog.

Ik ben onder de indruk van de levendigheid die kleur toevoegt aan deze beelden. Zwart-wit foto’s creëren een soort afstand alsof mensen toen in een andere wereld leefden. Nu kijk je recht in het leven van mensen die bijna honderd jaar geleden leefden. Geweldig.
Juf Connie u heeft zeker gelijk. Ik ben (nog maar) 30 jaar en kan me niet voorstellen hoe mijn opa en opoe hebben geleefd in die tijd net voor de eerste oorlog. Maar ook mijn ouders, ons pap in de late jaren 50 geboren en ons mam in de eerste jaren 60. Heerlijk om dit te zien. Afvragend hoe de zwart-wit fotos/opnames er uit zouden zien in kleur is dit een perfect antwoord 🙂

Brit here. I LOVE the Dutch and I LOVE Amsterdam, not because of the drugs and the hookers but the architecture, the atmosphere and the Dutch way of truly embodying everything that the Enlightenment stood for.
I think you have bit a misguided view of the Dutch, they don't care about foreighners or whatever as long as their way of life is not threatend. You just see the surface, underneath that lacquer the Dutch are not that nice.I love their being direct in communication and their discipline, they achieved a lot, but since the Netherlands has been importing more people it hasn't been a good thing between the different groups, lot of tension, just like in Britain. What part are you from in Britain?

Als ik dit zie ben ik blij met de vooruitgang die we geboekt hebben. Als ik de tanden van die jongen zie, de huizen zie en bedenk wat voor vocht problemen ze wel niet gehad moeten hebben en het werk wat volgens mij zeer beperkt was.. Nu kwaken ze over mondkapjes en 5g maar ik woon wel in 1 van swerelds beste landen en ik ben er trots op!
