I love the body shape and love that it can be played on the left thigh! I love the fact that it is really light which saves your back on long practice sessions. I love that it comes in a 4 and a 5-string as i am currently shopping for a 5-string for a more melodic approach to bass playing. Strandberg makes awesome instruments, i might pay them a visit when i visit Germany. Thank you Julia!
Very interesting. I follow Sarah Longfield who has several Boden guitars, both 6s & 7s and she loves them. Initially because of the lightness, but she had the same response to the fanned frets. She is quite small and has small hands so the angle of the frets makes it much easier for her. The basses sound great, and it looked as if the action was nice. I used to play a Rickenbacker 4001S so one of these would be only about half the weight! Very nice playing Julia.
the 5- string sounds amazing. I have a 5 - string peavey myself but the B-string is missing the clarity of the other strings, which the b-string of the strandbergs absolutely delivers
Strandbergs are a more comfortable headless design, because there is a swelling of wood that feels like how you would interact with a normal bass neck.
I've played this bass recenly (4 string original). It's amazing! Cool neck, light body, very crisp rich and clean pickups If I'd had 3300-4000EUR, I'd take it for sure since I'm struggling with the regular bass weight during commute
As a guitar player with fan fret experience looking at basses the "traditional" fingering for some chord shapes are less effective depending on where on the neck you're playing. I have yet to try playing chords on a bass but I wouldn't be surprised if that minor 7th voicing you were struggling with would be easier to play entirely inverted as in index on G, middle on D, and ring on E.
No big tuners and head stock means the balance point is further back so it is interesting to see how comfortable it is resting in the knee. A lot of instruments, I can't get the fret board where I want it, because the lower curve in the body is wrong, when it rests on my knee.
I'd go for the Original 5-string. I'm usually much more into vintage-style instruments, but I also appreciate progressive approaches like this very much! And this somehow strangely reminds me of the vintage Guild B-302! 😄 Recently I checked a Dingwall, and it felt really nice and smooth! I'd wish Strandberg took it up a notch and also put 3 pickups inside, the Dingwall pickup switching is really nice and versatile!
I've been looking at the bass for a while and watched several reviews. I managed to snag #1 of the 5 Gold 10th Anniversary Editions 4 string. Having played it for several months, every time I pick up my 1960 Fender Jazz it feels so "old school". The neck shaping, body shape & weight make SUCH a huge difference to the feel and playability. Not played it at a gig yet, so no idea about audience reaction..... May need to wait a while as on lock down
Very interesting! The two positions to put the bass in the legs, the neck's and the frets shapes are so surprising! Besides that, they are very beautiful! For sure I'd buy one if had money enough.

Beautiful bass, but if they were cheaper I’d honestly consider it. But for something like this, your investing for a unique sound (which you could with with literally any other bass) and just the added comfort of a headless.
Yeah, I like the body design for sitting positions. Perhaps a little out of my price range at the moment but it would be a consideration. Does it come in Left-Handed variant too?
I own the prog 4 string and she is totally right, it is an incredible instrument. What she missed about these basses is the push pull knob that allows you to switch from active to passive mode. It allows for an amazing tonal range for the instrument. Great review!
Yep, loved the 4 string prog one (the first one you played) it has a fodera twist to it's sound, sounded awesome. I feel like these instruments are about clarity and clean sounding, I don't know what it is but it is something I feel when I hear a fodera, there's a certain "classy" sound to it but maybe it's just because I know the price of these...
Julia, you're so funny! (In a good way.) You always make me laugh. The accent and the heavy rock part was perfect! Thank you! And of course, I like how you play. I hope I'll see you live someday.
I couldn't tell from the video but I wondered whether the strings were clamped at the "head" end, because if they're double ball ended like the Steinbergers, you'd be limited in choice to the manufacturer's range, but if they're clamped, you could use any. That aside, really good and engaging demo, Julia. If you like 'em light, you wouldn't be too keen on my current favourite bass: a Peavey 5 string Grind bass - it's a real neck-bender, weight wise. I might just have to hollow out the back with a router. 😱
They make great instruments. Two things that make me wonder... Some of their own signature artists don't use the Strandberg design neck. Also, they have the pickups at strange angles. They aren't angled in between the angles of the bridge saddles and the frets. Maybe they are angled this way due to experimenting with tone relative to position, but I've never seen angles like these, relative to the bridge and fret angles. I don't doubt that they are really nice, and sound very good. I think all the body shapes in the video are nice looking, and would all feel very good n my large hands. Is this the company that closed its original shop and has all their instruments in Asian facilities? I don't recall. If so, then it's good to hear that they are still making higher quality basses.

I agree, the prog 4 string sounded best to me. What do you think of the fan frets? Do you have to think about where you're putting your fingers or do they fall more naturally in the right spot? I've never played anything with fan frets.

Same reason that the strings on a piano are different lengths, proportionate to the pitch. The first time I played a Dingwall, it was a shock to discover how supple a fan-fret B string could be, while sounding more articulate and delivering a more solid fundamental. In comparison, the low E and especially the B on a parallel-fret bass have to be overly thick to get the right tension. Most of us are used to the slightly dull sound and poor sustain that results, especially above the 6th or 7th fret. Once you’ve heard and felt the difference, it’s hard to go back.

Okay, i have some issues with the statement that the Strandberg is "much" smaller than the P-Bass. If you compare the fret board, it is way larger than the P-Basses'. This makes the overall difference in size just about 10cm...

These have Darkglass electronics....
@@complexdevice I think he means the fact that it isn't run through a microtubes 900 (or similar) head, which has a very distinct sound, and kinda panders to the modern metal aesthetic.
Great crafted Basses!!...sound fine but l’ll bet require special care to keep’em in top playing condition...😒✨🎸I also wonder if those Strandberg Bridges can be used to replace the ol’ Stineberg Bass bridges???....🤔✨🎶🎸
Cool design with great electronics.
Great demo. Thanks so much. Great concept and sound. However for an Indonesian built instrument the pricepoint of any Boden bass is just ridiculous and leaves me puzzled.
Probably made in the same factory as my $199 squier jaguar
Nice clarity sound from the low B. Btw how much the weight and what kind of wood in the body of those?
OK, but why is the weight only praised but never specified? 3kg, 3,5kg? Or did I miss it?
