That was really good Jon. After a 20 year absence from the hobby I have come back and trying to learn more about washes etc. and found this to be much more informative than most of the videos on UA-cam. Can't wait to see more mate!
Hi Jon. Thanks loads for that mate. Really appreciate your comments. I had a break from painting for about 13 years. It's good to start again. Welcome back 😊👍
Sitting here enjoying your tutorials while I paint up 48 figures did the chainmail just before I watched, will have to try your way slightly different to mine. Worth looking into
Just painted up a load of Perry plastic Agincourt foot knights using Dark tone & blue tone, turned out better than my usual just dark tone, so thanks for the heads up Jon.. I found i only needed one coat...
Jesus - I've been painting for a life time too Jon but it looks like an old dog like myself can learn new things after all. Thats just a great system and in time for me to take delivery of a couple boxes of Saxons too. Cant wait to give it a proper go.

Sound's good mate. I wonder if I added strong tone and maybe sepia like on my bronze wash, to one of the layers it may look like rust. I may have to play about with that. 🙂👍
I use Army Painter Quickshade, dark tone and blue tone and sometimes the Strong tone which is more brown. I use some of the quickshade mixing medium to dilute it. These newer ones seem a bit more subtle than the tins of quickshade. I'm sure that some of the chain mail could be varied with more brown shade to give some variety as well👍🏻
Thank you for the great tutorial. Please make more. When you do, please turn off auto-focus so we can see the model clearly throughout the video. Well done.
@@jonbarrett8452 , Jon you could always do a work through, with snap shot stills, that would be great to watch how you go about it, and build up to your finished item.. ;)
Subscribed! Have been painting for a while - never thought to add blue wash to dark wash! Will get black wash definitely ! I found your video sir cause I was searching how to paint black plated armor , I am going to paint Perry mounted 1450-1500 knights turning them into Italian knights with Giovanni de Medici as head knight. They had black plated armor. Any tips for black plated armor sir? I thought of plain gunmetal with black wash or mixing black paint with gunmetal or oily steel, but I am not very sure. Thank you !!!
You could try GW grave lord grey. Paint all the armour silver and then go over it with successive washes until it's dark enough. Yeah I've been painting miniatures for around the 40+ years mark now. Let me know how you get on with it please 🙏 🙂👍
@@jonbarrett8452 Thank you for your reply sir! I beg my pardon - GW grave lord grey is a speed paint , right ? Do you mean as a base color and then silver and washes ? I am in the stage of assembling the knights at the moment 🙂
Pretty similar to how I paint chain mail, except I use P3 Armour wash on its own. For lining in I use Reaper Liner paints - brown & blue, which are super dark and thin down really well.
Awesome mate. I tried the p3 armour wash and didn't like the way it looked when it was dry. If you get a chance, have a go with these. I think you will notice the difference 😉👍.
Great tutorial Jon! So the trick is to undercoat the chainmail with bright metallic, correct? What paint exactly have you used, please? Is it important to use blue/black wash by Vallejo? I normally use Citadel range washes and AP tones.
Any silver /bright steel colour will do mate. I haven't used the citadel stuff so give it a go and let me know how it looks please. The technique should work the same though. 😊👍
No mate. The way that I layer paint on is that I will base coat. Then I will highlight up and then wash and line. If I use primer I will lose detail by the time I come to wash. I always use varnish to protect the paintwork though. 😊👍
@@jonbarrett8452 oh wow, do you have trouble getting the paint to bond to the plastic? And when you play any wargames with them does to paint hold up to handling?
@@j453 Hi mate. These days the acrylics stick pretty well to the plastic. In the old days it was a problem, but I find vallejo and scale 75 stick. Resin is good if you wash it 1st with soapy water.
