PWW SPECIAL - Toyota FJ40 with Cummins 2.8L Turbo Diesel Swap (Blasphemy?)

- PROJECT WRONGWAY SPECIAL EPISODE:
Check out Branden's 2.8 Cummins Turbo Diesel Swapped FJ40. Many would say his cruiser was perfect in its stock form, but Brandon had a dream. With the help of Level 10 Industries, they created something special. In this episode we discuss the engine swap, and other details about this epic cruiser. Purists can hate all they want, this cruiser is amazing.
Check out Brandon's instagram @Sarpniz

Special thanks to my brother Aaron. He helped me get the show off the ground, created the intro, music and logo I use for this show. I’m lucky to have him as a brother. Check out his instagram @aarondraper.
This show is an attempt at humor. Im not a professional, and it should be clear within the first few minutes of every episode. I’m trying to give it “the old college try”. Learn with me, most importantly, learn what not to do. Im building the Landcruiser to be my driver, and overlander. I have a 2012 Honda Accord I drive every day, and its a soulless journey each time.

Love the upgrade to the Toyota FJ40 with Cummins 2.8L Turbo Diesel! Very well done.
Me too, its a shame I had to observe this engine in real life. Because the want, is very strong.
Project Wrong Way I really think I’m doing the swap. I’m working with Donavan at10line. It is super costly
Donavan said Branden did a lot of his own work. Can we find out what he did him self and what he had them do. Trying to put it within my budget
Also now have a f2 Motor
, transmission and transfer case for sale. They we’re running great when I drove it home. Know anyone who would like to purchase
Not off the top of my head, but I know the engine trans and case would sell. It’s a good combo, and worth it to a buyer. I’m not sure what Branden did on his own, but I know the price of the 2.8 has gone down some. At least it seems like the price of the kit has gone down.
Well done indeed!
Men only use BIG trucks to compensate, If you own a 40 Series there is no need to compensate for any thing! Good to see the greatest Rugby team supported too.
40 Channel true words brother!
I lived in Panama with my dad when I was in middle school and he had a BJ-40. It was a great go anywhere 4x4. Awesome conversion!
That sounds like an adventure.
mouth watering, the cruiser that is
kye barrass you didn’t need to add that last part. It was assumed...
Thank you Kye.
Nice video. No knuckles busted, no engines toppled.
You should have more guests on. Really enjoyed it.
A Jordan thanks for watching man. More guests will happen, already planning another special. But there’ll be some regular old project Wrong Way in between. I had worked the night before shooting this, so it was almost 24 hours without sleep. Made it tough! I do like the way this turned out, so I’ll be keeping ideas for this in the future.
Awesome vid. Changing my whole thought process on my T100 build! Cummins 2.8 may be the way to go!
T100 build?! You have a link to that? Or a page? Would love to see that.
I really enjoyed you going deep into ben !!! pure gold
Ben on Ben action is worth watching.
Ok so idk how tf I've never come across your videos before but they are freaking excellent and you earned a sub from me man. Great video and love the LC stuff. I want one so bad but for now a 3rd gen 4Runner will have to do lol
Trevor De La Rosa Toyota blood runs deep brother, 4runners are dope as hell! You have an Instagram or anything?
@@projectwrongway9127 that's no lie man I love my runner. 297k miles and a daily driver. I'm social media stupid so all I have is FB I'm gonna look y'all up on that deal though
Another good one, PWW! **Definitely impressed with the stats, refreshed look and overall presentation of the Diesel FJ! Would love nothing more than to contribute such awesome modifications to my own build. KUDOS, everyone!
timmy treon it’s truly a dream machine man. Thanks for the props!
Thanks Timmy :-)
Liked and subscribed. Screw the purists. Its all well and good to build something incredibly beautiful and period perfect and then put it in a dust proof museum, but my Cruisers are patched together with whatever works and my family and I get out and enjoy the bush in them when we can. Build what works for you mate. Love the rugby top. Go the Wallabys!!!
Danny Conelly happy to see you liked it man. Purists have a place, both on and off the road. And in a museum... but Branden built this cruiser to drive it. A lot. And it’ll do just that, it’s got new life, and that power plant should go for a long time.
This one will spend exactly 0 days in any sort of museum and will spend many days on the road and off.. mileage is already going up (I drove 1500 miles round trip to do the show with Ben and drop off more parts).
Ben Brandon, that thing looks super nice. You can tell all the hard work you put into it. Nicely done.
Yeah, it’s rugged rolling artwork. It’s really nice.
Thanks Aaron! :-)
Another great episode! Big fan from Brazil! Love the show!
André Uliana all the way from Brazil! That’s awesome, and I know they have some great cruisers down there. Thanks for watching man.
@@projectwrongway9127 that's true. We have almost all of them in diesel versions. Mercedez Benz OM 314/OM 364 (the best in my opinion) and Toyota engine 14B (great engine too). It was produced until 2001. I wish this gonna be my next 4x4! By the way, it's call Toyota Bandeirante down here! See ya!
Awesome I'm starting into my project and love the idea of the Cummins !!
Scott F man. It’s very tempting. Such a cool little engine.
Watching your show keeps me motivated to finish mine 69FJ 40 2uz-fe swap also love the brown interior
King Ranch leather... My cruiser will never be this nice. But thanks to the parts I bought from Branden, it'll run.
Thanks - I think the brown just looks right with the Freeborn Red..
SARpinz Mine is read with brown leather seats but I have a bench in the front and they are more tan
Also just subscribed
Don't feel to bad purists, I'm putting a fj40 rear-end in my suzuki samurai with disc brakes and welded up. You're guys projects are very awesome
Thanks Larson! That Sami will shred. It’s not uncommon to use Toyota axles in those right?
Yes i had a 1992 4wd rear axle, now it has afj40 rear axle thats trussed and locked with the same disc brake setup you have
Great minds...
The only hate I have, is that I don’t have one! Another gtreat episode.
Bruce Campbell yeah, the jealousy is strong with me.
Very cool. In the process of a 2UZ + H42 swap in my 65. Slow going, but I'm working on it.
Man I like the sound of that swap, should be awesome when you’re done. You have a build page or anything like that?
What a Beautiful fj40.
Great detail on that conversion.
Love them numbers on that cruiser.
Thanks Jorge, appreciate you watching the show.
I love the 2.8. One day my FJ60 will have one
It’s a hell of a motor!
To hell with the purists. Cruisers were made to modify.
They have their place for sure, and lots of FJ-40's are perfect in the stock form. But Branden just orchestrated a build of what a FJ40 could be, his cruiser is ready to drive across the US and back. Multiple times it seems like.
I have the Cummins logo mounted with magnetic backing so when I'm at an event where I know people are just going to spend the entire time chastising me I pull them off and put them in the glove box so I can just enjoy myself :-)
I do like the look of a stock 40, but I myself can't leave anything standard. @SARpinz your shorty is indeed a nice piece of kit.
I don't walk around telling people off for whatever they have done to their cars. It's not my place to say what they should do. They are an extension of our personality and that's What makes them so good. You can just about throw any mod at them and they still look awesome.
@@pistnbroke2 #preach
Great video looking a the 2.8 for my 74 swb last week
Max Hill it’s a great little engine. With lots of tuning and potential, you can keep it stock or go crazy with power. I’d shy more towards the stock tune, but it’s awesome to think how much more you can get out of these engines.
@@projectwrongway9127 was also looking at a barra conversion winch i can get a kit. It out of a ford falcon 4.0L motor inline 6 cylinder
Nice video - not enough blood. I'm one of those numerous owners that dropped in a 350 some 20 years ago. Love that Diesel swap!
Brian Gasseling the 350, is nothing to scoff at man! There will be blood, I don’t think I can make it through my build without almost dying a few more times.
I really enjoy the build the Cummins 2.8 is awesome!
It is pretty rad. Thanks for checking it out Josh.
Awesome build, the only thing i'd add would be a snorkel. Go the Wallabies!
Richard Snellin good call, I’ll advise Braden!
Amazing build! Thanks for the visit and for the details.
It’s a great ride for sure, was happy to get a chance to check it out.
Subscribed to sarpinz. Loving the vids. Can't wait for the parcel lol and the finished product. I had a FJ 45 Landcruiser Ute back in the day. I'll send you a before and after pic.

My dad had a '72 that same color... Lots of great memories
This 72’ will be on the road for generations. It’s an epic build man.
Awesome build. I need a 2.8 in my old Datsun.
Everything needs the 2.8.
Have loved following both of your builds. I’m a bit of a purist. But I love this. Very well done!!
Noticed Sarpinz was build in the A11 plant , mine was as well. Super cool!
Pepper Outfitters thanks man. Tried to put a bit more of a polish on this episode. I usually shoot and edit the same day. I waited a while, and cut what I could on this episode. I have more specials in mind, about some cars / 4x4’s with some awesome swaps and builds.
Great interview! Beautiful truck. Keep up the great videos. I’m trying to decide to jump into a 4bt swap in my 66 fj40.
Thanks David!
👍👍 for the Australian Wallabies Jersey!
Cultural appropriation in progress...
That thing is beautiful.
Its hard to look away.
Thank you :-)
Great interview! Nice 2.8L!
John Adams thanks John, my first time interviewing.
He did a very nice job with his Land Cruiser.
Soap Maker yeah, it’s a great one.
Thank you
You cant go wrong with a Cummins. I'm definitely not worried about motor choice. My fj has a 350 in it. What ever gets the job done!
Whatever keeps a 40’ on the road!
Awesome
Thanks Bryner!
Love the didge at the start and Wobbilies jersey!
Great vid, probably needs more skids
Thanks, it was a nice touch my friend Nick put in there! More skids? Like drifting?
Super clean build
Yeah man, it’s a killer build.
This is a nice project, looks nice, and runs well
pOrbb OO it’s a brand new truck, thanks for checking it out!
That 2.8 is my dream swap. I love the old straight 6, but that 4 cylinder diesel is almost like it was meant to be. Just followed your Instagram page. Looks awesome! And being a follicley challenged man myself, I can sympathize with both of you. I just tell myself, “Jason Statham is bald and he is cool, right?”
Cpt. J. L. Picard, lets not for get that legend.
Thanks Trevor, I agree with the 2.8 fit.. like a glove! it just looks right somehow..
Sweet rig! Lots of great ideas and execution 👍👍
Thanks for checking out the show man.
Wouldn’t miss it!
thanks Dusto.. It's been fun. I've been hoarding ideas for a little over 20yrs (since I got my first one) so I've had time to think about it..
lovely cruiser, great conversion
Thanks man, first attempt at an interview episode.
Dream machine!
Totally.
@@projectwrongway9127 Thank you!
Nothing was broken or damaged? Is this even a Project Wrong way video?
That build was awesome, keep it up man!
I almost had to restrain myself from putting hands on the cruiser, and breaking something. For the show. And to maintain its integrity.
New subscriber. I just watched every episode. I have a ‘77 FJ40 you can restore next. You are a wizard Ben.
Andrew Churnside dang man. Thanks for the props, a ‘77 has some awesome stuff... power steering, fine spline axles, disc brakes, 2F, 4spd... id take a ‘77 any day! Appreciate you watching the show dude, truly humbled by the feedback.
Love stickers and Cummins engines. Really cool Toyota.
Mike Franz thanks man, be doing the drawing in a few days.
Love your content! Keep it up! Together you all are entertaining and could have a goatee.

You in the US or Aus? Or elsewhere?

Once again another great episode. I think the CTD is awesome.
I liked this video. The only thing is I would have enjoyed more shots of the FJ. Maybe doing some offroading or something. Great vid though!
Thanks for the feedback James, it was my first crack at an episode like this. We had a small window to shoot and I work nights so I had just gotten off. Next special I hope to have more of the vehicle, thanks for watching man.

Will I need to shave my head in order to become an enthusiast in the land cruiser community?
Daine Jir your choice, but not a necessity!
Either bald with small beard or bald with large moustache. Stylin! One of you blokes should talk to Roothy. He's clearly off the pace.
Rooths a legend. And if I could grow hair, it’d look like his!
You guys are so funny
I trying to buy my third land cruiser. I hope to learn a lot from you
Donna Reed mostly what not to do, but thats still learning.
So I finally found a cruiser to purchase. It is a 78. I found it in Kingston Washington. I have the top off and the seats out. I stored them in a heated space. On the north side of Washington it’s wet and I didn’t want them to rot. They are in great shape. This week I’m taking the rest of it apart to sand blast. Need to find out what I need to replace and what I can cut and patch
I’m here with Phil Anselmo from Pantera, I mean Brandon! J/K gentleman. Awesome job!
Paul Hartlieb Pantera! Good eye man! Branden is just like him...
speaking of which, I always wanted a Pantera.. that is definitely one of the posters on my wall as a kid. ;-)
Aussie Cricket shirt. A+ FJ40 AA++ DIESEL = AAA+++. Perfect trifecta. Made me subscribe!
Thank Ernst! Glad you liked the show man.
The Cummings swap is an awesome addition to making an FJ a daily driver. Did Branden (Ben) speak or share info on the 2.8 engines temp range?
You know it didn’t come up, but he did say it ran extremely well for the drive down from Seattle.
@@projectwrongway9127 I just finished binge watching your shows this past week. I love the interaction of between you, your wife and the guest appearances. Great combo, keep up the great work!

Just found this...loved the "compensate" question. Love the FJ40 more though.
It sold recently, some lucky guy / gal is cruising it!

His Pinzgauer is amazing. He had some cool toys, and definitely is a gearhead.
Thanks Grant. I had fun doing the episode with Ben. He suggested that the episode would be better if he were to help me fix something on my Cruiser.. of course I said no.
Putting my ‘74 2F drivetrain up for sale now... going all in!
jealous, of the epic drivetrain you're about to partake of!
Ooh, another bald cruiser-mangler! 😁 Ben, im a semi-purist, and DIG what you have done both with the swap and the interior.
Seems like you haven't chopped up anything, which means anyone can go back to stock, when the 2.8 dies in 40 years.
BTW, I need the sticker and battery. Thanks.
Pål Sneve Prestbakk I’m a semi purist too, which will show in my cruisers build. But Brandens cruiser is a great example of a resto mod with utility the main focus point.
Thank you! I am a huge fan of Cruisers and wouldn't dream of destroying it, but I also recognize my comfort level with change is not the same as everyone's.. I have tried hard to preserve the heritage and only make changes that enhance the experience and help it benefit from the years of tech advancement without compromising the spirit of the vehicle. #drivealegend
Not a bad idea that R2.8.
Lots to think about...
I want a 2.8 in my 1988 Toyota pickup
Would be an epic trail machine.
Awesome! Shout out from RSA🇿🇦
Epic! Wrong Way Nation grows all over the world.
The less tech on you vehicle, the longer it lasts. Those things will last till the apocalypse
Its a beaut, to be sure.
Great build 👍
Done so right, and the baby Cummins is powerhouse.
Thank you!
It’s actually pretty funny to watch this video because I’ve actually been getting a lot of negative feedback about putting the same engine in my FJ 40 I’ve got a 1968 then I’m going to fully restore it I just bought it last week and I really appreciate this video because it just confirms what my gut was already telling me about this engine so thanks for putting it out there. There are a couple other things though that would be pretty helpful and that would be a detailed list of some of the places that you may have purchase some of the upgrades that you’ve done on your vehicle although my vehicle is complete there are a few things that I would like to upgrade.
We only had a short time sadly, but @Sarpinz on Instagram has more details. It’s a fantastic engine, haters will hate.
Don't let ANYONE deter you from putting in whatever legal engine you want.... Original was certainly underpowered!
I own a '75 with a 350 in it. Would love to have a Cummins.
Same here bro.
Good episode & commentary.. great idea to host a guest on your show.
Thanks man!
That is an awesome swap.. I have a 1994 Toyota SR5 4Runner with the 3.slow V6 had already thought about swapping it with a Toyota diesel but. This Cummings r2.8 is also on the short list. If you don't mind me asking. What is the cost associated with this swap just on the mechanical side of it? Engine transmission and transfer case.
I’m not sure what it would be for the runner, but the engine itself has gone down in price I believe. Around 7.5k, still pricey but what a dream machine.
Put one in my wife’s 02 tj and have loved it from the beginning
I am strongly considering selling my truck (2012 F-150) and car (2012 Honda Accord) and just buying old vehicles to drop this diesel into. What an epic transformation. I'd love to see the variety of vehicles this engine goes with. I'm impressed, big time.
Project Wrong Way it completely changed the Jeep it’s a beast and gets great fuel mileage I also have a 72 fj but it came with a 350 I am waiting to see what the new motor Cummins is coming out with but Love it in the Jeep
Saya suka sekali bro, video ini sangat membantu masalah saya tentang FJ40 thank you so much
No worries!
Thanks for making this video, you guys are great. sending love from Canada
Thanks bro! What part of Canada?
Close by, up in Vancouver, love your sense of humor. Will continue to follow along and will share with my friends. Please keep making videos.
kevin creighton I lived in BC for two years. Love that area, especially the farther north I got. Nanaimo was great too on the island. I’ll keep making vids, thanks for spreading the word!
Nice Job with the Swap, but I'll stick with my 2f thanks. Its great..........
When it works
I love the 2F, and I’ll drive the hell out of mine (which used to be Brandens). But some day, I’d love to run this little diesel.
Nice '78! I'd love to swap out my 2F for A Cummins someday. 👍
Kevin Japhet me too man! I bought the drive train Braden took out to install the 5spd and Cummins... so I’ll be running the “old” 2F in my cruiser for a long time hopefully. But some day, I’d like to get that turbo diesel in mine. Such a cool little motor.
@@choubert007 I'm not ready to swap yet but if my plans change, I'll let you know. 👍
update !! the person removed the turbo from the 617 engine and had smaller injectors installed in the injection pump , that is how he was getting 40MPG out of the 617 5 cylinder , it was the OM616 4 cylinder mercedes diesel that was getting just shy of 50 MPG and that engine is naturally aspirated with ATF fluid mixed in with the diesel fuel
Wild!
What is that steering wheel? Looks smaller and thicker. Perfect. What is it?
I have no idea. Ill check, but I think its the stock 78' wheel.
Ben is right, it's just a steering wheel cover on my stock '78 wheel. I have one in the Pinzgauer as well, makes it just a little thicker and more comfortable on long drives. I'm actually going to go down to a 16" wood wheel and CNC the stock logo into it so it keeps that vintage look but is a better size with the power steering mod. Also, I think the wood will look good with the brown leather. Here's a link to the steering wheel cover in case you want to grab one - www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005DEITCY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
this video was so hilarious to me!
Thanks man, I tried.
Very fun video! Cool Cruiser excellent upgrades. You guys are funny as heck! I'm working on flipping a Cruiser to pay for a 2.8 swap and achieve same running gear (with much less focus on your amazing esthetics). I can't drive two Cruisers at once anyway and like you guys, I love the community and think I should share rather than hoard to spread the love. I know a bit of a personal question (as y'all were talking about going deep anyway) but how much do you have tied up in raw parts for the engine and adapters? Not asking for fab costs just raw engine and adapters costs? I can look up transfercase and transmission parts but not as much on the Cummins and considerations. Thanks fellas! Happy Cruising!
I can't answer the cost question Gene, it Brandons baby and he knows those digits. I can say the crate 2.8 has dropped in price a bit, to about 7.5k. But I know its pricey getting everything put together. I snagged his old 2f and drivetrain for myself. Thats what my little 72' is going to have. Happy cruising to you too bro, where you located?
I'm likely doing the same 2f swap into my stamped '66 fj40 (likely a 1964). I hail from the big ole open state of Montana. Enjoying your vids man! Keep up the good work! 👍
I wonder if you could jam one of these 2.8s into a kei truck?
What a savage swap!
So let me get this right - when the 2 of you were separated at birth and sent to live with different families, Branden eventually chose to go the cool jazz-look, and you opted for the porn ‘stache? Great show guys!
yes, that's right ;-)
Just saw this comment, and it’s spot on lol.
those MPG numbers came right from cummins themselves, people would just bolt on the weber carb and drive ( it was jetted for higher cubic inch engines ) you had to purchase the optional jet kit and test the various jets to find the correct jet . some person i cannot remember reported getting just shy of 30 MPG but that was with a light foot , not sure about the A/C though , now a better turbo diesel engine swap is the 82 to 87 mercedes OM617 inline 5 cylinder turbo diesel engine , a business makes adapters to bolt to all of the toyota and jeep transmissions , that engine with a slightly modified injection rack are recording almost 40 MPG at 9 psi turbo ( this engine is a 5,500 rpm max street diesel engine )this engine is all mechanical , no electronics to fail , the OM617 non-turbo engines are getting just shy of 50 MPG , but are slow to accelerate up to highway speeds , but i will be clear ( the MPG numbers are WITH injection pump modifications and ARE NOT stock )
Good intel David, I’m betting anyone doing research on the Cummins swap will see it’s worth looking into the merc diesel based on what your saying. Sounds like a killer combo.
Cummins did put on their site some info on a Jeep swap, mileage was 30.8 hwy and 25.8 city, and they compared it to the stock TJ 4.0. I imagine they will be coming up with some better mileage numbers as tunes and modifications become more popular.
Also, I know for some, mpgs wasn’t the main concern or reason for the Cummins swap. But those that have the engine will speak for themselves. As for me, I’ll be running the Toyota 2F with some added efi down the road.
Gday mate when the video started i was going to nail his gonads to the garage wall but as the video when on and he had not wrecked the fj i will forgive him very well done Great video as usual 🇦🇺🇺🇸

@@ronwebster3547 Thank you!
I want to know how he's pulling 22mpg. I've done that once with my R2.8. Most of the time I'm right around 20mpg. My speedo is accurate, axles, tranny, and t-case have been rebuilt, 3.70 gears. I just don't think I can expect more from a 5k# brick.
I believe it was a tune? He ended up selling the cruiser to a lucky buyer. But that kind of mileage would sure be awesome with a brick!
This would be the drivetrain I would want for an FJ40
Me too man. I had to settle for the driver train that was in there before the swap lol.
In the late 70's a buddy of mine got a new FJ40, being a bunch of beer drinking teenagers we tried to destroy it, but didn't get it done, we eventually referred to his FJ40 as the Land Crusher.
That’s a solid worth while endeavor!
great choice. i want to do this one myself.
Me too man, want it bad. Just have to wait for a while.
Cummins manufactures "universal powerplants" not designed to go into any specific vehicle. School buses use the same engine as a Dodge ram.
Rap's Games I’m glad they do this, I love the diesel options.
@@projectwrongway9127 me too
Where do you find the adapter kit for h55f? I've got a 3f and it'd be sweet to run a diesel.
You'd have to ask Brandon, he's on instagram @sarpinz - shoot him a message and he can help you out for sure.
Advance Adapters.. we had to stack up two, Cummins to Chevy then Chevy to Toyota, now they make a straight Cummins to Toyota as so many people are doing this swap.. 😊
What size rims/tires do you have on that thing? Are those the original rims?
I’ll check on it, and get back to you.

Ben is correct on both counts..
Is it too late to enter and win? Just kidding, great show.
Man, never too late hahaha
Gooooooooo the Wallabies

Sweet baby whale penis leather Batman! That 40 is sweet. That radiator cover/fan shroud with the engraved 2.8 on it sure is a nice touch. You sure went deep in his.. car there Ben. Well done Sir.
Isn’t it majestic, it sold not too long ago.
you're really good in front a camera, really funny, but for interview you need a better mic
Koro Sensei I’ve been looking for options, but have not come up with anything yet. I’d like to find something that is wireless, and small. Any recommendations? I have a small Rode Mic mounted on my gimbal, but it’s not doing the job.
Rode makes a wireless mic “GO”, but at $200 I’ll have to wait a bit before the budget allows it. Thank you for the kind words though, we did this episode pretty quick with no rehearsals or reshoots.
@@projectwrongway9127 yeah the rode is good when you're close to the camera, but for interview Lavalier Microphones are better
Koro Sensei would those work with episodes were I’m wrenching on the cruiser? I’ll check them out either way. Thanks for the input. I’m very new (obviously) at all of this.
@@projectwrongway9127 The episodes with FJ40 are really good, it's just when you do interview you're far away the camera and the mic and the mic catch everything around and not necessarily the voices
