I was wondering why there was no handover ceremony from Sarajevo to Calgary during the Closing Ceremonies 40 years ago, now I understand through this video. It was one of the rare times that a handover ceremony was held during the Opening Ceremonies, and due to the boycott of the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics, either there was a handover from Moscow 1980 to Los Angeles 1984 during THOSE Closing Ceremonies or were read by Lord Killanin, the IOC President at the time before his successor Juan Antonio Samaranch took over the same year. The Sarajevo 1984 Winter Olympics was a testament to not only the country of Yugoslavia, now Bosnia and Herzegovina, but to show resiliency during the decade-long boycotts of the 1980's, with Seoul being the last 36 years ago. And I noticed Calgary did double duty with the handovers, with this one, and the Calgary 1988 / Albertville 1992 handover during the Closing Ceremonies at night at the time. Thanks for this video, it helped me to understand this rare daytime handover, and Vucko, how can we ever forget our friendly wolf mascot, or Hidi and Howdy the Calgary mascots....and Le Magique the Albertville mascot.....PHEW! When they say " What You Didn't Know Then... You Do Now ".... there's my proof, 36 years later, thanks 😊.
This was the last flag handover to be done at an opening ceremony
Indeed. Then the flag was handed over to Albertville mayor at the Closing Ceremony
