I don't feel like people tend to find the matchup against illaoi unplayable. I feel that -- and watching this gameplay kind of reinforces this -- its just a frustrating matchup, because in ORDER to win, you have to put in far more work than illaoi does in every fight.
It's actually really helpful to hear your honest opinions playing shen, like when you missed the ultimate onto twitch. It's intriguing to hear your mindset and actions in a game and what that may mean for possible consequences
Dodging e and being unpredictable is key to win vs illaoi, that's why playing champs that have some sort of movespeed steroid in combat or just running ghost is invaluable to allow you to be more unpredictable, I play mostly trundle and singed top so I really like the illaoi matchup because of that
@@vicokonkwo7776 I remember when I started playing singed I used to suck in matchups like darius and illaoi because I lacked practice, but now if I see a darius or an illaoi I have a blast, baiting darius pull/ illaoi e and dodging darius q/illaoi's whole kit is extremely satisfying and one of the reason I like playing singed so much, spped can be so versatile in so many situations and can make it so that you can dodge things that most people would have a really hard time avoiding like morgana bindings, dodging is a way of life, it's so simple but so useful, I'm not a high elo player and quit ranked a while ago, but if you want to climb out of low elo, learn how to dodge, it will make things a heck of a lot easier
The Illaoi matchup depends on if your champ can take the chip dmg from the E as you're walking out or not, if you can take it then you'll walk out farm the 2/3 tentacles, take your time to scale and dominate the lane, if you can't take the chip dmg then she'll destroy you and force backs over and over until you loose your tower/get tower dived
in low elo maybe, in d1 i beat people with illaoi by timing my q with their autos, and aggressively trading with w+ grasp when they want to cs. Works well even against range champs, illaoi doesnt lose lane to basically any champ in the game if she's played correctly

@@archondarc I’m sorry but if people can land max range thresh hooks regularly, landing illaoi Q should be incredibly easy with any amount of game sense, it’s nearly identical to morde Q, just slightly bigger, and more damaging with an ever so slightly longer cast time. Plus odds are your opponent are trying to land things on you at the same time (obviously auto attackers don’t have this problem) but that gives illaoi very large windows to wallop a Q onto someone’s forehead when they and trade.

One of the best ways to learn how to beat Illaoi is to also play her. If you understand when she can get a kill and what prevents you from killing your opponent you have a huge advantage over other players. I've mained her and Shen and he's my first counterpick into her everytime.
This removes you from fights too much especially if it's a team fight. The enemy team can play into her ultimate too well. Illaoi is like fighting a Dark Souls boss while trying to PvP 2 other people. Problem is when they use the boss mechanics against you. You're great at dodging, but they use that to attack in the direction you'll go. Solo she's fine ("fine"), but a good pairing with her is frustrating. They can use your skill against you. Like a player leading you into bullets if you think you're dodging one to only walk into another. Which she has multiple tentacles that can do that without having another player.
in low elo true but in high elo everyone knows to back up and then shes useless- whereas other toplaners (for ex shen haha) have much more consistent contributions. Hers rely on your blunders while other top laners contribute no matter what the other teams top laner does.

To be fair I am biased because I wasted blue essence buying illaoi and now I regret it. Now I'm playing as ziggs which is just as annoying but at least he's fun to play

Actually... as someone who played Illaoi I can tell you that the most frustrating thing is when players walk away from their ghost, but stand in the range of the ability. Then you have to decide- do you follow them or do you try to deal damage to the spirit? If you decide to hit their spirit, they just leave the spell, but if you choose to follow them, they stay and you don't do much damage.

@Darkry Always hit the spirit, it will at least deal them a lot of damage if they stay in range or a chance to chase them when they got out of it. Either way it's a win win and your 3rd skill is already cooled down. Then do it again and again, for me 3rd skill is the most important skill of Illaoi in her arsenal.
The thing about illaoi is that you have to dodge everything twice and you still might lose, there’s no other champ that commands that kind of respect in the lane phase. That’s in contrast to yasuo and irelia where even if they miss everything they still win because they managed right click you🙃
For me, what makes the Illoai matchup so difficult is his pushing power. Yes, you can not get killed, but you are almost always giving away first tower and plates.
The moment she misses her E you just go in and dodge the Q that will follow. From that point her only damage is W. She's a very stupid and slow champion and very easy to beat and I'm saying this as a Silver player who's not even a top main. When I get filled top vs Illaoi, I just tell my jungle not to come and I do everything by myself.
@@t3chn0dr0n3 That's the problem, you're not a top main. None of my friends are top mains and they say exactly the same thing and don't understand how broken this champ is into certain matchups. However, top mains of league all agree with other top mains that Illaoi is so stupid. Your champion pool probably happens to have champs with any sort of dashes or range that instantly counter illaoi. Most top champs do not have that luxury. I've picked up fiora recently and damn illaoi is the easiest matchup because of her W and Q. However, playing a Garen, Nasus, Sett, Darius, etc. into illaoi is almost impossible because you have to have perfect movement to dodge, you can never all in her because her e is always up. If she has her ult up you can't engage because you instantly die without the possibility of disengaging unless you have flash which has a 6 times longer cooldown than her ult. She is ungankable, so the only way to play her with those champs are by giving up all turret plates, first turret, and being down 50 CS. Yes, most champs outscale her, but then your team flames you even if you have not died because you lost your turret and are down so much CS. Even if you get ganks pre 6 and are 4-0 you can't 1 v 1 her or 2 v 1 her post 6. It's an impossible matchup unless you're diamond+ for champs with no mobility so she is always a permaban for the champs I mentioned above. If anyone says Illaoi is easy to play against and only plays champs with range or a dash in their kit, that is the moment I stop listening because yes she's easy into several matchups, but impossible into a lot of other matchups.

Holy shiet, I'm often facing acusation that Shen is a noob champ. I always knew that they are mistaken. However after that gameplay I know one thing. I'm not even using full potential of that champion. Usually I just play well my lane and support my team. Sometimes I'm incredible impactful with my ultimate and wining TF. However xPetu shows the true power of that champion. For example that TF in dragon pit with Reksai (though Reksai played it also perfectly). So yeah, kit of Shens is quite easy to understand and use but it's incredbile hard to use correctly! I'm really amazed how you played that game. Seriously u nailed it! Huge respect for the Illaoi mains that stick to her even if people call her trash. Her character is just so cool. A priestess that tests her opponents by ripping their souls out and beating the shit out of it. Amazing and simply primal.
one people realize they can actually run away from you, you realize that illaoi is kinda trash. she has no hard CC yet requires people to be close to her, and even in that case, all her damage comes from super slow, easily avoided skill shots.

You could learn a lot by viewing some VODS from shending help (I overcame the Camile matchup using Petu's and Shending videos, Darius is a bit tricky yet for me XD) for these matchups but NGL it would be awesome if Petu did this as a series
I main both fiora and shen so I can tell you a little bit about the match up. Pre lvl 3 trades will always be in favor of fiora, unless she misses her w. it doesnt matter if her w hits you with or without your taunt on it, the attack speed slow will make it impossible for you to win the trade. Always make sure not to get hit by her w or else just retreat. only taunt her if you are close to her, so she'll have less time to react. Ideally you wanna taunt to get behind her to also minimize the chance of getting stunned even if she parries your e. Other then that, learn how to position the minion wave and to stop her from hitting the vitals. Once you have enough gold, immediately recall and buy bramble vest. If you can get it before fiora reaches level 6,you will always win the trades
Darius is easy just don't get hit by the outside of his Q that's kind of it if he hits you he wins if he doesn't you win. If you are able to W his W you take almost no damage.
holy shit you are so calm and logical. I would have never have thought to do a lot of the things that you do on this champ. I love playing shen but i have learned so much and it's only been half way through the game. I never would have thought to play patiently during team fights, to use Q before flashing, ulting before an ally starts a fight so you're there faster. Even redemption being a decent item on shen, never would have guessed.

Illaoi is a little like Darius in the fact that once you know that the secret is *not to fight her on her terms* you just win and there's nothing that they can really do with them being immobile juggernauts. It's not even that hard to pull off in either case - just be patient and learn when flight is better than fight.

As an Illaoi OTP, I'm BURNING looking at EVERY CLIP of this video. Everything is true, and Illaoi can't basically do much about those counterplay points, just bait ganks so the opponent feels forced to make a play because jgl is there and they both die.
One of the things about Illaoi (and a lot of other melee champions) is that they would only stop moving if they will throw an ability at you. Instead of reacting to the animation or the projectile, react to them stopping their movement.
You actually shouldn't even walk out of his E range in early game when you got hit by his E. Pre level 6 Illaoi doesn't do enough damage to you or kill the spirit, when you got caught with his E, if you know where the jungle is, and you know that your all in is stronger than his, if the wave state is in your favor (For example, if you are slow pushing at him, or the minion wave is not that big etc...), just run at him with your full combo for an all in while trying to dodge his Q like how xPetu described. He will usually back off because you out damage his E combo. Running out of his E is problematic because you might lose experience, which is a huge deal early game as a top laner. If he doesn't kill the spirit (which he can't do because he doesn't have damage pre level 6), you wouldn't even get slowed and tentacles wouldn't even spawn and hit you. If you missed exp, then he will definitely bully you with the exp advantage and level power spike. When you run back to cancel his E, good Illaoi will walk up and try to push you off the wave, potentially setting up a freeze and zone you out of exp range with jungle pressure. If the wave is slow pushing to you, he will just crash the big wave to your side and harass you under tower. You should only back off once he hit level 6 with ult. After level 6, if his ult is on cooldown, and he missed his E, just run at him and all in him again with your full combo. He will never be able to kill you without E and ult.
Hey, also chall Shen player. Tip for people in the more recent patch: Warmogs is a very solid item, cdr, hp with which your passive, e and ult scale and also the passive really helps you especially since you dont have mana. In the Illaoi match up it is especially sexy because of the sustain. Dont rush it, get your frostfire but warmogs second is very solid.

HUGE TIP: if you get hit by her e and you don’t want to dodge a bunch of tentacles, the trick is to dodge the first tentacle, then sit near it, hit it once, and as it’s next attack is going off hit it again to kill it, you will only deal with one tentacle from this trick. (Preferably use this if you are safe under tower) Extra tip: abuse the fact the illaoi has a non-existent lvl 1 so AGGRESSIVELY zone her off the first wave, straight up sit past her caster minions and do not let her cs and she will not have fun. All you have to do is dodge her skills, but bear in mind she will setup a nasty set of tentacles.

I get Illaoi pick in to my Sion alot. I usually try to be super defensive before first back, do some quick Q trade to trim illaoi down, shove or set up a slow push to my side, back for some armor then teleport into lane to freeze the wave to get level 6 first and go all in before she hit 6. there was one game that we failed a gank but I still can kill a 2/0 Illaoi with 0/1 Sion once I hit 6. After 1st base for armor whenever she land an E I trade try to charge Q at my ghost and the trade is usually worth it. I also like baiting Illaoi to Q on the minion wave so she always over push before level 6.
men 4 days ago i could not carry myself from silver 5 0 Lp now i play only shen and follow every step of you and i just have 80%+ winrate last 20 games at silver 3 and climbing
Once Illaoli hits tentacle, just move away from it and casually miss 5 cs which is like every 7 sec. Dodge the tentacle use abilities and aa while dodging tentacle and miraculously farm all minions.
regarding gold efficiency: staff of flowing water becomes more than 420% gold efficient, worth 9700 gold while costing only 2300 (therefore getting u very early mythic passives on top) every champ can also get this by simply pressing either surelya or solari and ur entire team got the full buff

Seems like at 16:50, the right move was not "E out", but "E in and taunt ilala under tower". She takes damage, and you free yourself from the curse ability. She had no tentacles to back her up, so even if you MISSED the taunt.. if you zone her off, you protect spirit and you're better off.
way around illaoi tentacles is to stay close to them which allows me to get an easier angle to dodge them while also evading multiple tentacles to hit at once

It’s always more dangerous to have alive tentacle around because the delay in slam is reduced due to not needing to spawn a tentacle first

I'd call it a high maintenance lane. You have to be on your toes the ENTIRE time.

Dodging e and being unpredictable is key to win vs illaoi, that's why playing champs that have some sort of movespeed steroid in combat or just running ghost is invaluable to allow you to be more unpredictable, I play mostly trundle and singed top so I really like the illaoi matchup because of that

@@vicokonkwo7776 I remember when I started playing singed I used to suck in matchups like darius and illaoi because I lacked practice, but now if I see a darius or an illaoi I have a blast, baiting darius pull/ illaoi e and dodging darius q/illaoi's whole kit is extremely satisfying and one of the reason I like playing singed so much, spped can be so versatile in so many situations and can make it so that you can dodge things that most people would have a really hard time avoiding like morgana bindings, dodging is a way of life, it's so simple but so useful, I'm not a high elo player and quit ranked a while ago, but if you want to climb out of low elo, learn how to dodge, it will make things a heck of a lot easier
The Illaoi matchup depends on if your champ can take the chip dmg from the E as you're walking out or not, if you can take it then you'll walk out farm the 2/3 tentacles, take your time to scale and dominate the lane, if you can't take the chip dmg then she'll destroy you and force backs over and over until you loose your tower/get tower dived
in low elo maybe, in d1 i beat people with illaoi by timing my q with their autos, and aggressively trading with w+ grasp when they want to cs. Works well even against range champs, illaoi doesnt lose lane to basically any champ in the game if she's played correctly

@@archondarc I’m sorry but if people can land max range thresh hooks regularly, landing illaoi Q should be incredibly easy with any amount of game sense, it’s nearly identical to morde Q, just slightly bigger, and more damaging with an ever so slightly longer cast time. Plus odds are your opponent are trying to land things on you at the same time (obviously auto attackers don’t have this problem) but that gives illaoi very large windows to wallop a Q onto someone’s forehead when they and trade.

One of the best ways to learn how to beat Illaoi is to also play her. If you understand when she can get a kill and what prevents you from killing your opponent you have a huge advantage over other players. I've mained her and Shen and he's my first counterpick into her everytime.

This removes you from fights too much especially if it's a team fight. The enemy team can play into her ultimate too well.
Illaoi is like fighting a Dark Souls boss while trying to PvP 2 other people. Problem is when they use the boss mechanics against you. You're great at dodging, but they use that to attack in the direction you'll go. Solo she's fine ("fine"), but a good pairing with her is frustrating. They can use your skill against you. Like a player leading you into bullets if you think you're dodging one to only walk into another. Which she has multiple tentacles that can do that without having another player.
in low elo true but in high elo everyone knows to back up and then shes useless- whereas other toplaners (for ex shen haha) have much more consistent contributions. Hers rely on your blunders while other top laners contribute no matter what the other teams top laner does.

To be fair I am biased because I wasted blue essence buying illaoi and now I regret it. Now I'm playing as ziggs which is just as annoying but at least he's fun to play

Actually... as someone who played Illaoi I can tell you that the most frustrating thing is when players walk away from their ghost, but stand in the range of the ability. Then you have to decide- do you follow them or do you try to deal damage to the spirit? If you decide to hit their spirit, they just leave the spell, but if you choose to follow them, they stay and you don't do much damage.

@Darkry Always hit the spirit, it will at least deal them a lot of damage if they stay in range or a chance to chase them when they got out of it. Either way it's a win win and your 3rd skill is already cooled down. Then do it again and again, for me 3rd skill is the most important skill of Illaoi in her arsenal.

The only reason why I keep playing shen is that xpetu exists.
The thing about illaoi is that you have to dodge everything twice and you still might lose, there’s no other champ that commands that kind of respect in the lane phase. That’s in contrast to yasuo and irelia where even if they miss everything they still win because they managed right click you🙃
For me, what makes the Illoai matchup so difficult is his pushing power. Yes, you can not get killed, but you are almost always giving away first tower and plates.
if you dodge her e, you take a significant part of her damage out of the equation for like 8 seconds, in which then you can beat "her" ass
The moment she misses her E you just go in and dodge the Q that will follow. From that point her only damage is W. She's a very stupid and slow champion and very easy to beat and I'm saying this as a Silver player who's not even a top main. When I get filled top vs Illaoi, I just tell my jungle not to come and I do everything by myself.
@@t3chn0dr0n3 That's the problem, you're not a top main. None of my friends are top mains and they say exactly the same thing and don't understand how broken this champ is into certain matchups. However, top mains of league all agree with other top mains that Illaoi is so stupid. Your champion pool probably happens to have champs with any sort of dashes or range that instantly counter illaoi. Most top champs do not have that luxury. I've picked up fiora recently and damn illaoi is the easiest matchup because of her W and Q. However, playing a Garen, Nasus, Sett, Darius, etc. into illaoi is almost impossible because you have to have perfect movement to dodge, you can never all in her because her e is always up. If she has her ult up you can't engage because you instantly die without the possibility of disengaging unless you have flash which has a 6 times longer cooldown than her ult. She is ungankable, so the only way to play her with those champs are by giving up all turret plates, first turret, and being down 50 CS. Yes, most champs outscale her, but then your team flames you even if you have not died because you lost your turret and are down so much CS. Even if you get ganks pre 6 and are 4-0 you can't 1 v 1 her or 2 v 1 her post 6. It's an impossible matchup unless you're diamond+ for champs with no mobility so she is always a permaban for the champs I mentioned above.
If anyone says Illaoi is easy to play against and only plays champs with range or a dash in their kit, that is the moment I stop listening because yes she's easy into several matchups, but impossible into a lot of other matchups.

Holy shiet, I'm often facing acusation that Shen is a noob champ. I always knew that they are mistaken. However after that gameplay I know one thing. I'm not even using full potential of that champion.
Usually I just play well my lane and support my team. Sometimes I'm incredible impactful with my ultimate and wining TF.
However xPetu shows the true power of that champion. For example that TF in dragon pit with Reksai (though Reksai played it also perfectly).
So yeah, kit of Shens is quite easy to understand and use but it's incredbile hard to use correctly!

one people realize they can actually run away from you, you realize that illaoi is kinda trash. she has no hard CC yet requires people to be close to her, and even in that case, all her damage comes from super slow, easily avoided skill shots.

You could learn a lot by viewing some VODS from shending help (I overcame the Camile matchup using Petu's and Shending videos, Darius is a bit tricky yet for me XD) for these matchups but NGL it would be awesome if Petu did this as a series
I main both fiora and shen so I can tell you a little bit about the match up.
Pre lvl 3 trades will always be in favor of fiora, unless she misses her w. it doesnt matter if her w hits you with or without your taunt on it, the attack speed slow will make it impossible for you to win the trade. Always make sure not to get hit by her w or else just retreat. only taunt her if you are close to her, so she'll have less time to react. Ideally you wanna taunt to get behind her to also minimize the chance of getting stunned even if she parries your e. Other then that, learn how to position the minion wave and to stop her from hitting the vitals. Once you have enough gold, immediately recall and buy bramble vest. If you can get it before fiora reaches level 6,you will always win the trades
Darius is easy just don't get hit by the outside of his Q that's kind of it if he hits you he wins if he doesn't you win. If you are able to W his W you take almost no damage.

holy shit you are so calm and logical. I would have never have thought to do a lot of the things that you do on this champ. I love playing shen but i have learned so much and it's only been half way through the game. I never would have thought to play patiently during team fights, to use Q before flashing, ulting before an ally starts a fight so you're there faster. Even redemption being a decent item on shen, never would have guessed.

Illaoi is a little like Darius in the fact that once you know that the secret is *not to fight her on her terms* you just win and there's nothing that they can really do with them being immobile juggernauts. It's not even that hard to pull off in either case - just be patient and learn when flight is better than fight.

One of the things about Illaoi (and a lot of other melee champions) is that they would only stop moving if they will throw an ability at you.
Instead of reacting to the animation or the projectile, react to them stopping their movement.
You actually shouldn't even walk out of his E range in early game when you got hit by his E. Pre level 6 Illaoi doesn't do enough damage to you or kill the spirit, when you got caught with his E, if you know where the jungle is, and you know that your all in is stronger than his, if the wave state is in your favor (For example, if you are slow pushing at him, or the minion wave is not that big etc...), just run at him with your full combo for an all in while trying to dodge his Q like how xPetu described. He will usually back off because you out damage his E combo. Running out of his E is problematic because you might lose experience, which is a huge deal early game as a top laner. If he doesn't kill the spirit (which he can't do because he doesn't have damage pre level 6), you wouldn't even get slowed and tentacles wouldn't even spawn and hit you. If you missed exp, then he will definitely bully you with the exp advantage and level power spike. When you run back to cancel his E, good Illaoi will walk up and try to push you off the wave, potentially setting up a freeze and zone you out of exp range with jungle pressure. If the wave is slow pushing to you, he will just crash the big wave to your side and harass you under tower. You should only back off once he hit level 6 with ult. After level 6, if his ult is on cooldown, and he missed his E, just run at him and all in him again with your full combo. He will never be able to kill you without E and ult.
If the illaoi is maxing Q and building AD your spirit can be killed pre 6

Hey, also chall Shen player. Tip for people in the more recent patch: Warmogs is a very solid item, cdr, hp with which your passive, e and ult scale and also the passive really helps you especially since you dont have mana. In the Illaoi match up it is especially sexy because of the sustain. Dont rush it, get your frostfire but warmogs second is very solid.

HUGE TIP: if you get hit by her e and you don’t want to dodge a bunch of tentacles, the trick is to dodge the first tentacle, then sit near it, hit it once, and as it’s next attack is going off hit it again to kill it, you will only deal with one tentacle from this trick. (Preferably use this if you are safe under tower)
Extra tip: abuse the fact the illaoi has a non-existent lvl 1 so AGGRESSIVELY zone her off the first wave, straight up sit past her caster minions and do not let her cs and she will not have fun. All you have to do is dodge her skills, but bear in mind she will setup a nasty set of tentacles.

I get Illaoi pick in to my Sion alot. I usually try to be super defensive before first back, do some quick Q trade to trim illaoi down, shove or set up a slow push to my side, back for some armor then teleport into lane to freeze the wave to get level 6 first and go all in before she hit 6. there was one game that we failed a gank but I still can kill a 2/0 Illaoi with 0/1 Sion once I hit 6. After 1st base for armor whenever she land an E I trade try to charge Q at my ghost and the trade is usually worth it. I also like baiting Illaoi to Q on the minion wave so she always over push before level 6.

Once Illaoli hits tentacle, just move away from it and casually miss 5 cs which is like every 7 sec. Dodge the tentacle use abilities and aa while dodging tentacle and miraculously farm all minions.

staff of flowing water becomes more than 420% gold efficient, worth 9700 gold while costing only 2300 (therefore getting u very early mythic passives on top)
every champ can also get this by simply pressing either surelya or solari and ur entire team got the full buff

Seems like at 16:50, the right move was not "E out", but "E in and taunt ilala under tower". She takes damage, and you free yourself from the curse ability. She had no tentacles to back her up, so even if you MISSED the taunt.. if you zone her off, you protect spirit and you're better off.
