Wonderful work. I well remember in the late 1950'S at the London, Clapham Common Fair watching the men of Saunder's Amusements building up the Lightning Skid. At the time the winch and crane mounted on the front of the Scammell tractor was not working so the men had to manhandle the various components. When it came to the driving motor and mechanism it took the entire crew to lift it off the trailer and maneuver it into position. Mr. Saunders sauntered over and muttered "This is torture. You have to get that crane fixed". Everything about the Skid was heavy from the cars, the fish; mechanism and motor. A wise decision to mount the mechanism on a trailer.
    Thanks for posting,

Very informative video but just a few questions. What timber is used in the ride? What paint is used? And what varnish do you finish it off with?

Question for you Joby, this Skid wouldn't be ex-Thurston's would it, by any chance? Thanks in advance. PS Keep up the great work!

This is the ex Tom Smith & Sons machine, not sure which Thurston your thinking of - various members of the Thurston family have had 4 or 5 skids over the years. But as an educated guess I think you probably mean the Supreme? If so it's now with Russell Cook, should be plenty of videos out there. Hope that's of some help.
