I think in MTB it's different. MTBs are purely human power and E-Bikes have motors. Different things equals different competitive categories. All the things regarding laws, trail etiquette etc. are a completely different topic and willbe left out.
In moto on the other hand, you already have different categories regarding 250 2-stroke, 250 4-stroke, 450 4-stroke etc.
Hence the only sensible thing would be to have a separate E-category.
All the things regarding speed of the wheel while jumping etc. could be adjusted.
In trials I totally see the usecase. It's small, compact, relatively short events and on world cup levels often indoors. So the fumes are in consideration aswell.

Moto is pretty clearly classified into power output these days (250f's vs 250 2s, 450 is open cc pretty much) anyway. I'd rather let electric race against gas bikes under limited power settings, much like Stark has introduced with their "Race mode". 48hp for 250 class, 60hp for 450 class. Let the best bike win within those rules. There are advantages and disadvantages to each.

@@bwhaskell I’d make a own set for it i mean in the end the thing should get more advanced and when it’s competing in a all different area it might not get much better which is to a part what i expect such things do. Plus there is also MotoE already so why not classify as MotoEGP well there aren’t that many manufacturers though or at least nothing prominent.

@platin2148 theres MotoE and FormulaE because electric isn't competitive against MotoGP bikes and Formula 1 cars. In motocross and supercross it's a different story. Electric is competitive and sometimes better in moto.

I'm a Stark Varg and Alta MXR (since 2018) owner, and have owned many gas bikes (125s, 250s, 450s) over the years. I also own acoustic road bike, acoustic mountain bike, and an electric mountain bike. I don't think the comparison between MTB and Moto is apples to apples. In Mountain biking, you're comparing human powered vs electric, and its a clear speed advantage almost everywhere except downhill. With moto, you're comparing two different types of propulsion. For moto i think it should be "let the best bike win". Who cares how the power is produced? Stark is doing it right with their racing mode and limiting power to current 250f (48hp) and 450 (60hp) bikes. When Alta came out, electric bikes in motocross were new and alien and everyone thought the government was forcing them to ride one. But people still kept their gas bikes. Now Stark stepped things up to the next level and people are realizing how awesome electric bikes are for motocross, and i suspect pretty soon you'll be seeing a more even mixture of electric and gas bikes. I ride a lot more now because i can carve turn tracks locally without pissing off neighbors, and i'm faster on the MX track because i make less mistakes and the bike is easier to ride.

E-motos definitely have their place and they aren't going away. I had an Alta for a few years and that bike had tons of advantages. It was easy to ride (no clutch or shifting), basically zero maintenance, it ran the exact same every single time regardless of temp or elevation, could ride it more places without annoying people. The only downside, for me, is the weight. These bikes are tanks and you definitely feel it. I've certainly had crashes before where my bike followed and clobbered me and I sure as hell don't want tackled by a 270lb dirt bike. Once battery tech improves (and it will) and they can get the weight down to the 220-230 range then it's going to be hard to not buy one. That being said, I was at HighPoint over the weekend to watch the pro national and if all those dudes were on electric bikes that would be so freaking lame. The sound of the motors and the smell of race gas at the races are such a big part of the experience I'm not sure I'd have any desire to go watch in person if that went away. The start of a pro national sounds like the gates of hell are about to open up and that shit gets people pumped. I can't imagine that being dead silent and then zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. They're going to eventually let them race at the professional level with the gas bikes and I'm sure all the major OEM's are working on an electric MX bike at this point, but maybe only allow one rider from each team to pilot an electric mx bike so they're mixed in there but not completely taking over.

In dirt bikes I've ridden/raced a few brands, kawasaki, ktm, husqvarna, yamaha, suzuki more recently triumph and stark many different years, 2 strokes 4 strokes 80, 125, 250, 300, 350, 450 525, 690 and what I'd say for the electric bikes is if you haven't ridden one you shouldn't have formed an opinion about them, thats like saying any brand are no good without ever trying one. Theres just no logic to it.
Personally I found the stark incredibly fun to ride, the lack of gears and clutch actually make you focus of body position, braking and power which is very usable but theres absolutely tons of it at any time or speed.
I've said before and will again, they cost too much and need to come with 3 batteries you can change in seconds. But that said I see them at the track doing a full day no problem.
As for racing, I say chuck them in, if they dominate then what are we all scared of ? Progress ? Quiet tracks ? On that one, I love the noise of a bike however, if electric bikes means 3 times as many tracks competing for my business and cutting the cost to ride then I'll take the future. Its not like they can't make e mx bikes with gears and a clutch if demand was there.
On a side note triumph was pretty good, very high reving to get to the power.
(I'm not saying bb shouldn't have an opinion. as a husqvarna rider I don't think he can admit to having ridden one but I'd be very surprised if he hasn't)

There are already batteries starting production at 450-500 Wh per kg, double of what the current density is (twice the ride time/distance as today at current vehicle weights). They should start with separate classes (eg 250/450cc) to develop the technology. Races could use swappable batteries if needed. I see the whole moto industry shifting to e-moto in 5-10 years. Wasn't that long ago 4 strokes started beating 2 strokes, that's a good analogy. Our planet and all living things on it need this change sooner than later.

@@joel387ktm Many of those are used by refineries to produce the gas and diesel as well! And with every new generation of batteries the usage goes down, heck, there are some cobalt free batteries already if thats what you refering to. Tesla has cobalt free batteries out now in some of their vehicles. Not a fan of Tesla my self but thats one example. So maybe you should do research instead of just hating on everything electric.
There are batteries in the works right now that will give 2 - 3 times the power out the same size battery. That would mean for example, the Stark Varg would do 2,5 - 3 hours at PRO level on a Motocross track and last an entire day in the woods, meaning a rider in most cases will be wanting to stop before the bike ever do.
And people saying batteries will be expensive to replace... well, you are not likely to be replacing them with in 5 - 10 years if not longer, compare that cost to all the cost in engine parts, oil, fuel, pistons, other fluids... Electric bikes can save on brakes too, one thing they might be hard on is the tires, but that can be tuned to be improved.
So again, maybe do your own research. I'd be the first to gut the Stark Varg if it was so trash, the only proper bike out there atm on sale that I know of.
So far its been very hard to find anyone putting that bike down.
Also, Stark Varg will charge on a generator in about 1 hour at 240V. I know some people wanna claim it takes 8 hours to charge and what not...

Until recently, everyone was making fun of the idea of electric bikes as being wimpy/slow. Now, people are complaining that they're unfair. I used to be on a team that built jet-powered dragsters, then we started building an electric landspeed car. I didnt know much about electric motors before that project and was blown away by how much power can be packed into a small package and how customizable the power could be. You dont need the 'save the planet' stuff for electric vehicles to become popular. They have their own set of advantages and disadvantages and the infrastructure for them is coming along. Also, charging an electric bike with a generator is still more efficient than running a gas bike... A generator is much more fuel efficient than a motocross bike and an electric motor will put a lot more of thay energy to the ground than an ICE bike does while losing energy to heat and vibration/sound

First, Billy is sponsored by Hsq so he can't talk about it. Though pretty sure he hints to have ridden one anyway. Second, the reason some people are disinterested, and I can only give you my own perspective here, is that they just aren't suitable for enduro riding the way we like it, i.e. in a non-park setting where you hop on a bike and go ride for up to a full day. Even with the fake news 6h capacity that Varg advertised I'd come short on some days, and nobody wants to deal with that. It's also worse if you do get stuck without charge in some hole, where with the gas bike you can go on foot or whatever and grab a 0.5 L bottle of petrol to get you out of a pinch, on an e-moto you'd do what, drag a diesel generator into the woods or something? Anyway, I'd personally *love* to have an e-moto for woods riding, as I very much dislike the noise and disturbance we're causing with our current bikes; and I think that part has a chance to preserve our ability to even go ride anymore in the near future. It's just not there yet, not nearly, and it won't be until electric energy storage systems improve, a lot. For park settings, tracks, etc. it's gonna be okay, it's just that I don't have the money for yet another bike for very specific thing :)

I’m all for electric vehicles/bikes as they are fun, easy to use, quiet, and generally less maintenance. I don’t own them to “save the world” that is marketing bs and people need to stop with that narrative on both sides (supporters and haters) as it just shows how surface level you are. Sure in most use cases in the long run they are more eco friendly but I see that as an additional benefit and not the main selling point. For me not paying for fuel and less maintenance/logistics is a huge selling point, you can just take one out for short spin whenever you want. EV are also not for everyone if you travel long distance and go to very remote places than EVs probably won’t suit you, but most normal people don’t travel long distances often and have unlimited time. The bike in the air is so balanced and easy to control. Easiest bike I have ever ridden on a motocross track. Petrol isn’t going anywhere fast it’s just another avenue for people to get out and ride

They will be in the back if they are no good, with no harm no foul. The only reason eF1 exists is cause they don't have the power to compete with F1 engines (yet). But the Varg has enough power to compete at gp level motocross. It just needs a clutch.

    • @DirtBikes_MathGarden
      @DirtBikes_MathGarden 3 місяці тому

@@MarcSherwood weird comment, but I’ll bite; are you projecting? I don’t hold that belief you’re describing. There are very real physical limitations that will restrict electric from overtaking the endurance racing scene. The truth is, EV’s just don’t have the range or run time required to compete in, say, the Baja 1000 or another long distance/time race. It’s hard to imagine much more efficient and powerful energy than 5 gallons of good ol’ gasoline; batteries of that ‘equivalent energy’ size don’t exist at a reasonable enough weight so as to be competitive. There is a limit to battery efficiency, which we’ve basically already reached. That is to say that you can’t just have an incredibly small (lightweight) and extremely long lasting battery in the same item. And sir, that’s okay, because they’ll dominate other avenues of Motorsport racing. This technology certainly can and will still develop, but I don’t ever expect to see electric dirt bikes dominating in endurance format racing, like desert racing or hard enduro.
Plus, especially in the case of hard enduro, I don’t believe there is any physical property of electric dirt bikes that matches the utility of a 300 cc two stroke piston that loves to lug. The sheer inertia of the engine, and how that is converted into traction, is truly a thing of physical beauty that I see no comparative advantage to in an electric bike. With that said, however, I’d love to try riding a hard enduro setup electric bike to really feel if this specific hypothesis of mine is right (I own a 300 2stroke and ride/race hard enduro). I am aware of electric trials bikes, which seem to be quite capable. Hard enduro is certainly different though. Anyway cheers
