Great story. One little thing, 'Flaneur ' is not 'to wander with no purpose'. It is a noun, not a verb. A Flaneur might wander with no purpose.

A Master Photographer! Sure Allard uses Leicas here, but it's about framing, seeing the light 1st. Waiting that that special moment. LOVE it.

So many good tips, yes talk to people, but don't necessarily wait to take pictures. I like how he carries two cameras with different prime lenses.

If I were given only one photographer I could sit down with it would be Bill Allard. His work opened me up to seeing the world in color after having been a b/w photographer for much of my 35+yr photographic career. His visuals sensibility is nuanced, quiet, yet powerful. I have all but his latest book on my shelf as a constant resource to inspire me when I feel stale in my work. I hope to meet him/attend a workshop of his at some point soon.

That would be a great choice! I just talked to him yesterday. Nobody talks about photos like he does. He is truly an inspiration!

Martin Rumfeld Thanks. Unfortunately I had to copy the photos out of his book, so hence the little bit of softness, but his actual photos are wonderful, and with the beautiful Leica glass as well. Cheers!

Thank you. What a great interview! Interesting, I sold my 55mm 1.2 and exchanged it for a 28mm for my Nikkormat and it was my go-to lens for decades.

Decades ago it was almost impossible to buy a National Geographic magazine somewhere in Poland.

Nice feature... BUT: why can't we see at least 3-4 pics he shot at this rodeo? Would have been nice. Thanks for this great quote, Mr Allard: "A camera is a camera is a camera". It is about the EYE behind that camera. I am afraid, some tech photo nerds will never ever understand that. So many YT videos are proof to that.
What Allard's old pictures show us today: it is NOT about buying a 6.000,- to 8.000,- Leica, but it is about becoming part of the scene, connecting with people, catching the moment. As everyone can see here: some of his old pics are technically rather poor. But they breathe!

Alot of naive well intentioned newbie photographers emulate young UA-camrs that are well known because of their inline visibility. Compare the endless same old tropes kranked out by the Matt Day and Joe Greer school with the MASTERS like William Allard, Alex Webb, Harry Greuyart and Ernst Haas. Emulate the best and then shoot your own way. Leave the UA-camrs aline. They arent old enough nor good enough to show you anything yet.
