- Leica Society International proudly presents our 5 Tips for Fearless Journalism with Ed Keating, Leica Camera shooter, and former New York Times Staff Photographer. In this series, we sit down with experts in Leica Camera buying, collecting, shooting, editing, and more! We ask them to share their experience and insights. Watch and learn how to elevate your photography and take it to the next level.
Edward Keating lived and worked as a photographer in New York City from 1981-2021. Like previous generations of street photographers, he taught himself how to photograph by chronicling the street life of everyday New Yorkers. Within ten years, he was hired as a Staff Photographer at The New York Times where he covered national and international news and was a regular contributor to the Sunday New York Times Magazine.
In 2002, Keating was awarded the Pulitzer Prize as part of the New York Times team covering the attacks of 9/11. In 2008, Keating exhibited his collection “New York” alongside Robert Frank’s work at The Pingyao International Photography Festival in Pingyao, China. His collection of work on Route 66 was featured at Bursa Fotofest in Bursa, Turkey, in 2011.
Keating’s work resides in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York City and The Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Florida. His one-person exhibitions include; The Camera Club of New York, The Leica Gallery-New York, and at Visa Pour l’ image, the international photojournalism festival held annually in Perpignan, France.
In 2019 his book, “MAIN STRƎƎT: The Lost Dream of Route 66" was published by Damiani, a project he started in 2000 with a 22 photo essay shot for The New York Times Magazine.
Sadly, Ed Keating passed away on September 30, 2021.

I took a Leica ICP workshop with Ed in NYC a few years ago and it was a great, productive, inspiring day. I was sad to read of his passing in the NY Times. Glad to see this interview posted.
Thanks for sharing that memory!
Great wisdom! Would've loved to meet this man and study under him!
Ed gives great advice! It's not the equipment, it is all you. Be relaxed, be very observant, be respectful to place, time and moment. Use simple cameras and lenses that you are totally familiar with.
Exactly!
As a skateboarder & photographer, sneaking around places is like the default. Fun times had by all.
Respect for this man
Love “Taking the picture is the final act.”
Great video. I met Ed Keating a few years ago on Martha’s Vineyard. He was selling photos, with his lovely wife, at an art fair. If I hadn’t been on my bicycle I would have purchased one of his images. I regret not having done so to this day. He was great to chat with. I recently purchased his Route 66 book - a masterpiece. RIP Ed.
Thanks for sharing that story. Ed will most certainly be missed.
Cool interview and yep, all five of those are needed to get the shot. Thanks ED
