Good morning Gary. That river looked the same to Lewis & Clarke as it does today. The land doesn't change that mucover time. Putting together a picture book of all those lovely homesteads is a great idea. Have a nice day.
Good morning Gary, Beautiful tour ! That cabin looks like it was pretty nice at one time. Maybe it was just the camera angle but it looks like it was fairly big. Very interesting, my friend. Have a good day!
What a beautiful, rugged piece of country. My old legs cringe at the thought of trying to navigate all those rocks. Thank you so much for taking the time to share with us. I will be waiting for the coffee table book of old cabins, by Professor Muskrat Thomas. Many blessings to you my friend. PB
My oldest brother ran hounds all over in the late 70's and the Salmon River was one of his places to catch a cat or a bear. His last elk came from someplace down on the Salmon River. A cold wet night in the rain nearly killed him. Covid pneumonia got him the next fall. I get blown away every time I run down the Lochsa for the same reasons. Lewis and Clark were probably wondering what they were thinking there too. There is a great story about the "Carlin Party", a group of hunters that went up the Lochsa in 1893. I have a book about it and should read it again.
don't want to slide off the road In that river 😅.. thanx 4 the video Gary ❤ I had a uncle swim that river 4 a big horn sheep before back in the 90's... 😅 and he swam back across with his bighorn...in towe😊😅😂 !!
Beautiful country. Rugged isn’t the right word. Around here there are cabins in the woods but most structures from the past have rotted away or been consumed by the forest. Pretty lucky to get to see these. Enjoy the day 👍👍
Those mountains are gorgeous, but even in summer are deadly. Would loved to see them back in theredays. But would been huge amounts of wolves a d grizzlies.
Good Morning Muskrat, checking out those cabins would be fun, wonder why they don't keep at least some of them up ? And those roads should be fixed and kept usable, isn't that part of Forrest management? In Oregon I saw a lot of roads closed on the Forrest service allotments. I really like your cover on your truck. Have a Great Day. God Bless America and Trump. 😊
It would be. Maybe this Summer if there's enough time I'll try to do that. It is their job. That road, I was told would be dangerous to fix, but I think it's probably more about money? It's steep sided though and with the roots and sod burned away with the forest fire, it might be unstable enough it would be dangerous? You are allowed to walk up there, maybe I will this Spring? I would like to see what it looks like now.
Only Muskrat @8:37 would pan up a river and say you could cross there and walk down....I see impassable 20 foot boulders everywhere right down to the river edge!
I'd have to resort to some book learnin' to be a hunnert percent on Lewis & Clark's trip through there. I'm old, but I ain't THAT old! I do believe though, that by the time they got to that point, they'd explored the Yellerstone country, dropped into the Lemhi country, wintered up with the Shoshone and Sacajewa's folks, who set 'em up with horses, a shaky guide, and instead of sendin' em south to the Snake, pushed em off into country what shoulda eat 'em up an spit 'em out! Again, though, they ended up eatin' the livestock, starvin', and dependin' on the kindliness of the Nez Perce on the other end. Sorry, dependin' on my mem'ry, well, things is a mite tangled an fuzzy, but that's why them Boys kept good journals. Read 'em!! Good stuff!! Thanks fer the road trip, Sir! Beats hell outta where I been all weekend. Take er easy!
Good mornin and many blessings. I wish I could get in my truck and go for a drive to the mountains. A blessing I no longer get to enjoy I guess. Sure is beautiful Gary. Stay blessed my friend.
Howdy. Awesome to see how different your view of the Salmon is from our view. Our property sits between the Salmon & the Snake. Really enjoy these drive along videos.
That would be cool to have a book with all the area cabins in it. That would be a great video canoeing down the river and visiting the cabin. Maybe you can find some time to visit the cabin. Have a Blessed Day Friend! Justin
It would! I looked into the cost to print them though and it's kind of expensive. If it wasn't dated, and there was no hurry to sell them, it would be better, but nobody wants an outdated calendar.
Another nice drive! Man, that road must've been quite an undertaking to get built. That book you mentioned would be great. I sure wish i would've thought about that when i lived over on the Montana side just East of you. Back then there still were quite a lot of those old cabins scattered around. I did take a picture of a few. I don't even have the pictures anymore.
Howdy 👋🏻 Thanks for sharing. Sure is pretty there. It’s 48’F here today. You ought to see some of the clothes they’re wearing 😅You’d think they were going to Alaska 😅 The one thing I didn’t see today was flip flops 😂Have a good day ❤🙏🏻❤️
I've tracked and killed three mountain lions over 20 years, just me, no dogs. There's nothing more rewarding as a hunter. That being said, hounds are still the most effective means of management, and I have nothing against hound hunters. All hunters need to stick together as our numbers dwindle.
Wow! I know another guy , "Idaho Mountain Built" here on you tube that has done that too. His boy has also. I've tried, but never have gotten it done. I came close once, but the cat jumped down the rocks off a cliff. I could see it's tracks at the bottom, but I couldn't follow it. Congratulations! That's not something very many people can say they have done!
Happy MLK/Inauguration Day. Lewis and Clark went over Lost Trail Pass eventually then down the Bitterroot Valley to the Lolo Pass I believe. It's been many years since I looked at the map. That route took them past what is now the Chief Joseph Ranch at Darby, MT. This is the ranch seen on the TV show Yellowstone. Never watched the show myself. Thanks for the drive down the Salmon. I might drive that road this summer.
It's a HAPPY DAY for sure! I think they did too. (went down Lolo) When we went by there last week, they still had the no parking signs and cones in front of the Chief Joesph Ranch / Dutton Ranch movie set. I think they are done filming though? We don't get that channel, se we haven't seen it either. Just one or two episodes is all. Ceder, our Daughter was an extra in season 5. It was funny, because she said she tried hard to get in as many background shots as possible, but the only one she was actually in, all you can see is the back of her head!
That's an absolutely stunning mountain site. Amazing how beautiful our earth really is. I do like that old cabin by the river, makes me wonder what history it holds. ( wow, your camera has a phenomenal zoom ). I wonder how deep the river is at that point? Might be able to cross it on horseback?
It's really pretty ain't it? I want to go over to that cabin. I've wanted to for a long time now. The river varys. Some places it's really deep, other places you might get a horse across, but probably not a great idea. That spot is deep and fast moving.
Afternoon !!! I remember a documentary where they said Lewis & Clark hired an indian guide to cross the Bitterroot Mountains, I think that's correct. The indian said 14 day's to cross & in the end took 54 day's. They called them the most inhospitable mountain's they had encountered. That was going into Idaho as the narrator stated. 6 degrees this morning. Only had couple dusting of snow. 2inches last week. Still not as bad as last Jan the 15th. We hit -10 below. 12 inches of snow & then a lot ice. For a week.
@howmanable interesting! I remember the narrator saying that it took 54 days to cross a mountain range. I have cousin in Salmon that taught school there. Wrote a book titled ," Joined by a Journey", by Mike Crosby. Big Lewis & Clark historian. Thank you for your reply!😅
I really don't know. I read the journals but I was still in High School and don't recall. It's rugged now, and back before there was a road, it wouldn't be possible. Today, they float it with rubber rafts, but a dugout canoe or wooden raft would be a disaster!
Be good to know the story on those old cabins - how do the folks on that closed road get in and out - what did you shoot the cat with - do the book man would love to see it might be your retirement fund
Lewis and Clark two leaders commissioned to find the NW water way passage to the pacific. I often wonder how many times on the climb to two ocean pass did they ask each other this one simple question. What engineering genius thought that a boat navigation up the Missouri, turn into the Colombia for easy 🤔 shipping route? Oh oh I get it now, there was an entire firm of engineers involved. That explains everything 😂😅 only an engineer would try n get 💧 to flow up hill. By the way isn't it odd one was named Meriwether? Too close to fair weather. Oh Merry Weather Lewis and Summerville Clark 😮 two men in search of perpetual mild climate. Equal chance of discovery 😅😂. Sorry a day after 🧊 🐟 at -1 has me rendered 🤪 n funny haha this 🌄. Oh and 👀 the brilliance of educated engineering in my past. Just felt like hacking on them. Mountain man
We are having an unbelievable great day! I hope yours is also! I've been bad about answering comments lately, but there's a surprising reason coming up!
Exactly. If they were your dogs, and you raised and trained them, I can see where you could really get into this. Just going along was fun, but not the same thing.
Good Morning Sunshine 🌄
Another scenic video in the Idaho mountains, bravo!!!!😁😁😁😁😁😁
Amazing scenery! I would love to see that same area in the spring or summer! A book of all the old cabins is a great idea!!!
Good morning Gary.

Me too! My knees don't work very well anymore. Professor Muskrat! Ha! I love it!!!
A great beginning for a new America! God bless you and beautiful Idaho! 🇺🇸
Another great video Muskrat. You live in a beautiful section of our country.
The cool looking canyon... The rough but beautiful place! Thanks for sharing, have a great day.👌✌
It really is a beautiful, rugged place! It's steep and rocky. I doubt many people have really seen the upper end of those cliffs.
Very wild area. Thanks for sharing
Good morning, what a beautiful scenic trip you took us on this morning, much appreciated. I feel like I could feel the crisp air :)

Lewis and Clark were following an Indian trail that went through the mountains just north of the Lochsa River.
History is important, it foretells the future......
Thank you muskrat for the great videos of the area and history. Iam so glad I found the salmon area when I retired.
You're welcome! It's a great place to be. I always wonder how people found it. We followed friends here, how about you?
Thanks so much for sharing Muskrat 👍. Love your content man!

Have a great day and week ahead.
Thanks for sharing the beauty that that surrounds you!!
I love this road trip you’ve been taking us on. Thank you!
Just get some catnip filled deer hide balls scattered around and then say “here kitty, kitty”! Sure to work! Such a beautiful place! Have a good one!

Lewis and Clark started over the Bitterroot Mountains on September 11,1805.
Good morning ! Is the restaurant still open at the end of the road across the river from the boat ramp ?
Beautiful and tough country, much like a lot of Idaho. A person could spend a lifetime exploring it and still not see it all.
Evening, looks good n cold up there. Never seem to get tired of the scenery, its sure beautiful.
God bless y'all,
Tennessee Hillbilly, Out
Thanks! It was. It's very pretty down that road.
Great drive in the woods or river valley! Thank you!👍🏽😊❤️🇺🇸
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Good stuff Gary - I'm enjoying coming along on this series along the river.
Thanks! I'm glad you are.

It would! I think I'll try to do it this Summer. I waited too long on that other one, and now it's gone.
I believe I've hunted off the Lewis and Clark trail off of little 4th of July creek north fork? 🤔
That would be part of it. They went through there.
Good morning! A cabin calender would be cool! Thanks and have a great day!
It would! I looked into the cost to print them though and it's kind of expensive. If it wasn't dated, and there was no hurry to sell them, it would be better, but nobody wants an outdated calendar.

Good morning friend be safe out there
