- THE LOOKOUT, Directed by Brian Bolster
An intimate look inside the solitary, day-to-day working life of Leif Haugen, a fire lookout spending a season scanning the landscape for untamed wildfires on top of a mountain in northwestern Montana. A primitive one-room structure serves as both his home and office, with only a radio to keep him connected to the outside world. Leif's job is to scan the valley floor for any signs of fire activity - one which calls for enduring long stretches of tedium and an eagle's eye and quick response. THE LOOKOUT captures the critical nature of one fire lookout's work as well as the life of quiet, contemplative solitude which accompanies his job. THE LOOKOUT won the Big Sky Award at the 2012 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. It is available for purchase on iTunes through March of 2014.

Firewatch brought me here.
+greensleevez firewatch made me want to do this after my senior year (2016) as a summer job before I go to college.
+noahmeme2 can you??
+Hippy Gamer I think we all hope for it.
Firewatch actually inspired me to become a fire lookout for the summer. I'm looking into it and training myself, as it won't be long until job applications come rolling in. Assuming they aren't already out.
@@esco5593 Did you do it?
Imagine living here and hearing a knock at the door in the middle of the night.
Me: "WHAT THE HELL YOU WANT!"
I doubt that anyone out in the wilderness like that would want to do you any harm. And if it was bigfoot or whatever, well...he wouldn't bother with the formality of knocking.
just some bear asking for a cup of coffee man, give that man sum

A creepypasta about a firewatch tower.
This is going to be my job
This is my dream job...
me too
Same can't wait to do this
same here i hope that their are still opportunities for it though
Conner Wilson you can search them up, there’s a wed site dedicated to it and they have postings for multiple states. Will try and share link, it feels like a calling to me as well! I’m fairly solitary by nature and enjoy being with myself and solitude. Nature and doing a service for the community is so appealing!
You got till the 15th to apply if you have a natural resource degree.
My dad and him were great college buddies, so this summer my dad took me and my brother to his lookout to spend a night with him! It was awesome
How do you get there? Why doesn't he have a dog?
Where is it?
I love that this film does justice to the quiet lookout experience with the sound design - no music or anything, just the sounds of his life.
This guy is definitely free from COVID-19
Actually he got it twice while he was up there😐
@@4rnorthwest how did you know mate.
I watch this whenever I'm super stressed and it totally relaxes me. Thank you to those who produced it
I watch this video every four or so months, wishing that one day I’ll be able to do something like this.
My parents spent the summer of 1968 at Thoma Lookout. They had some great stories. My mom was the first female to occupy the lookout.
I remember watching this and now a game called "Firewatch" is doing this essentially. I am excited.
He’s a stone cold sun chaser with coffee upon his lips
Meets the morning dew with steam rolling from the tip
Of a worn out tin mug that’s seen many morns
He’s a early riser, heat finder whose clothes are battered and torn
He lives upon a mountain where birds wake him from his rest
And northernmost winds brush coldly upon his chest
He sings a solemn song to remember that he is blessed
To live a life of solitude up on the mountains crest.
Did you write this yourself or is it from something? I like it a lot
@@maxmarohn581 yes this is one I wrote. Thank you!
@@colinhennessy7609 It´s absolutley lovely!
I am a solitary guy and wouldn't mind being up there alone for the watch. I am also a licenced ham radio operator and I cannot think of any way I would be up there without my radio.
If you like this video, treat yourself to the incredible book Fire Season: Field Notes From A Wilderness Lookout.
Honestly, this is my dream job.
seriously considering applying to a job like this, they're everywhere in Alberta, Canada. I think it'd be an excellent way to challenge myself, and my self-motivation.
Aaron Duff Any luck?
Any luck?
Any luck?
Any luck?
Any luck?
Fantastic! I lived in Montana for three years when I was young, it was a wonderful time. And there is nothing quite like a simple, minimalist lifestyle to bring you closer to nature and a belief in a spiritual existence.
Fire lookout man I be!!!!!!!!! MT Bonaparte LO. Year #2 coming up in 2020!
There will always be fire lookouts. In places where will fires are only a mild concern I can see them being replaced. But when you get major wild fires every year, you can't beat the practicality of real human fire lookouts
This is a job I’ve dreamed of having my entire life but with now so few Lookout stations remaining I feel my chances of ever getting to do it are slim to none
Cool film. Seems like a very grounded guy living a grounded life.
Love that job
image having this be your job but you get internet and can play firewatch
a photographers paradise.
Firewatch->Great Big Story->this video
Yeah same with me! It was a nice game!!
God damn, what a peacefull seeming life..... Paradise for a recluse like me.
Solitude is definitely my kind of life.
The only down side is that you can’t have 1 love one with you all times . I love being alone but i would love to enjoy nature with someone.
I think u can bring some1 to hang out like a night or two that’s good
Nothing as good as spending time with ur loved one after a long time of not seeing each other
I'm so jealous
You lucky, blessed n privileged man, to wake up to, harmonize, feel, and be witness to, what this world/people ALWAYS NEEDED ... MOTHER NATURE. thank u
I want this life.
And now we all have the solitary life - albeit without the amazing views and fresh air!
Making a pro con list of applying to one of these stations. So far pros are out weighing the cons.
This is the ultimate asmr
Montana life is the life for me living down there in the mountains!
the fact that people get paid to do this and I'm here all like 'may i take your order, please?' .... so fucking jealous
My father worked as a fire watch in the summers for Forestry in the 50’s in Washington State. This lookout was a palace compared to his watch. He said was essentially a phone booth on top of a tower. Just big enough for a good chair, a bucket for “business”, couple gallons of water and a sack lunch. He didn’t even have a radio. They used old sound powered phones that were WW2 Surplus.
I want this job so bad
Great video. Thanks for uploading.
What an amazing short film, it captures the serenity and grandeur of the place with great cinematography and silence. I read Edward Abbey's "The Journey Home" and thought to learn more about fire lookouts.
I visited Diamond Butte lookout several years ago. The tenant said a huge hailstorm came through the day before and shattered his car's windshield. Mostly peaceful environment, but at times could be terrifying.
who would dislike this video
What a great documentary! I am a volunteer lookout in Southern California.
A great piece of film making. Editing, audio and photography are top notch!
That was Lovely. It's March 30, 2020. I needed that. Thanks.
What a spectacular location and job. Sure would like to spend a few seasons doing that. Great footage. Thx very much.
Great film, thanks for sharing! :)

Brian: "Hey!...Hey, wait! I'm just making a movie, I don't wanna STAY here!"
this work has placed me in heaven
This officially is my dream job
Every lookout is special in its own way, no two the same. Ive been to a few.. Some are fun to get to. Some are hard.
This job a like being a lighthouse keeper
I'm dead set on being a fire watchman summer of 2017. To late in the season now and I have the state park I'm at now, but I think I can quilt for a gs3 level lookout position. Come late November I'll be applying for all abilitys I qualify for.
Dalton Uber well did you end up doing it ?
great
Year round be my dream.
depression flew away for16;34 watching this video
And returns back after that
Me too! It's such a great game.
This makes me feel whole..
Yiis me too
You wouldn't even have to pay me to do this. I have been a wildland firefighter for 9 years now so this would be a nice change of pace haha.
OMG! I totally want to do this when I'm in my 30s!
And, are you in your 30s yet?
Meeting the lady's parents: Son, what do you do for a living?"
"I watch trees".
...........
Firewatch
This kinda reminds me of Oblivion the movie
I would love to do this job!
What do you used as equipment throughout the year, do a documentary on that!
I feel like these types of towers will never fully vanish because while their original function might start to vanish and become less necessary with more technology and such, they are perfect to be renovated and put more into things like hospitality and rented out. You couldn't ask for a better view of wilderness.
07:25 awesome
i would need an internet to do this job. also a dog and maybe a bike.
I would Love To have That Job !!!
How do you het a job like this?
Three commercials in a row, UA-cam? Really?
Use those nights to learn about astronomy.

Where did you get 60k in 4months from?
He's very good job but where's his vehicle. And did he go to eat or take showers when he lived his home in mountain
Just applied for a job like this. My fingers are crossed.
Did you get it?
?
???
How did it go??
Did you do it?
im just curiouse where does one sign up to become a lookout and if so what training is required
MR DEADSHOT depends where you are but you’re gonna want to apply on Usajobs . These jobs are hard to get and you usually won’t get paid well ,won’t get paid at all or not be selected. It’s hard work and usually you will need wild land firefighting experience or knowledge.
He's actually living at The Wall watching for White Walkers.
jeez talk about the best camping spot in the world.
I wonder if you could bring a friend with, of course, they would have to provide for their own provisions off the state's budget, but I wonder.
Bravo.
What is that topographic sextant thing called? That thing is awesome!

Does anyone ever read the posts that are already on threads like this? There's like 108,000+ posts on this one already? Do you honestly think you're the first person that wants to do this job or has asked "How do I get a job like this? or "Are there any Fre Towers left standing?"
It's not just this threads it's every thread on UA-cam wth 25 or more comments.. Click on them to view but, please don't think you have to reply to EVERY post on the threads you're reading..
The writer still gets credit for all the views, not just for people replying to the threads.
I just got on at one of Washington's last manned fire towers. Not many left sadly!
There’s a lot in Oregon still! 🤣
So what'll happen when all the lookouts get too old and beat up and they have to be torn down and removed? Will the Forest Service build new ones to replace them?
I want this to be my career, any chance these will still be around In the 2020’s 30’s 40’s and 50’s ?
Wait where's the toliet?
I want to do this so bad xD
Okay, I just found my dream job.
The big great story brought me here
Has anyone tried nighttime firespotting using a thermal imager?
I like your back pack, when can I purchase one??
How do we get into this work? Any idea what wages are?
leave it open just in case
As a former lookout on Oregon lookouts, I found this to be realistic. .
You enjoyed it?
Where do the go to the bathroom and bathe?
I wonder if any bears pay him a visit?
How do I sign up for this?
Is he Norwegian? Hes name sounds really norwegian. Anyone know?
I WANT TO DO THIS
If only it had wifi, a soda machine.
Piss off kid
What does someone need to do to become a fire watch employee
Or lookout
Still searching qualifications myself, here’s a link to a site with some info www.firelookout.org/lookout-jobs.html
Why isn't there any support by choppers which can bring Water, Food, solar panels and building Stuff?
because thats exepensive as fuck?
Some lookouts do utilize this method. But if it is any wilderness area only non-motorized methods are allowed to operate. So no, helicopters or vehicles.
