i swear that shot of Ellen Burstyn walking down the street in her red dress (6:35) will always be one of the most haunting and depressing things for me...that woman was so desperate for her shot at recognition and getting out of her humdrum life that drugs destroyed her. :/
In one of the earlier versions of this video a few years ago, the music in the background of that ellen butstyn clip was the part which is at around 07:23 in this video(2010-JLaw)..... that part of the music made that ellen burstyn scene even more epic..... i wish i could've saved that version somewhere.....

CAMILLE, THE GRADUATE, LADY FOR A DAY, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM, ELIZABETH and TÀR are among the greatest steals of Oscar History and greatest performances of all time. On a side note: this is one of the best videos i have ever seen on UA-cam, or anywhere else for that matter. The music, the editing, the emotion.. I got goosebumps all over. Absolutely brilliant, a masterpiece.
I think all of the performances mentioned above (by you) are not even close to Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard (1950) and Bette Davis in All About Eve (1950). Their lost in 1950 Best Actress race is still one of the biggest shame of the Academy.
I'm so glad Celia Johnson in Brief Encounter is mentioned. What a performance! Talk about restrained, nuanced acting making a film so poignant and heartbreaking. Wished she made many more movies, but she preferred the British stage. A performance for the ages. So happy she is not forgotten. See her also with Alec Guiness in The Captain's Paradise, along with Yvonne DeCarlo, from 1951. Great cast... and it's a comedy no less! I think it's really good and still holds up. Seeing Celia Johnson in this was a surprise since I had only known her from Brief Encounter. She is really funny, as is the rest of the cast.
Rosamund Pike for Gone Girl was the clear winner that year. Julianne Moore's Oscar felt more like a consolation prize because she has given far better performances (Boogie Nights, Far From Heaven, The Hours). The same thing can be said about Dame Judi Dench and Jessica Chastain. I'm still waiting for Glenn Close, Saoirse Ronan and Amy Adams to win an Oscar because they 100% deserve it😢
