The early 80's I was in my early 20's and there were so many funk bands on the radio and so much fantastic funk/soul music being played. WTF Happened? The artists of today sure aren't what they used to be. I couldn't tell who's who today. All i want to hear is 70's, 80's, and early 90's funk/R&B/Soul music 24-7, and it's all i listen to. Screw the rap crap today
Another reason why I have rid myself of modern day Radio. My daughter bought me one of those Google Nest Mini device where you can play any songs. I stay listening towards my favorite Generation songs the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s Music. And my favorite Smooth Jazz Music.
That FUNKY BASS player's skill set is in full command quite masterfully and certainly has a dominating musical effect through out the entire song: The beat in conjunction is absolutely SOULful and with the surrounding cast you get nothing more than TRUE talent in perfect harmony. Unfortunately this is missing in most of today's so called music. Thus entertainment at its best is really all in your choice of THROW BACK sounds.
i seriously agree here. this is what music sounds and feels in its most soulful and powerful incarnation. just magical, that bassline is thick and swaggering. i really enjoy the interplay of the rhythm guitarist and the keyboard wizard. Firing on all cylinders with this track.
I had the pleasure of seeing Starleana and Kirt perform live in a club in New Orleans ~1986. The signed photos afterwards. If Starleana looks fine to you fellas on video, you should have seen her close up - Incredible eyecandy, georgeous!
It takes me an hour to listen to this song, because I'm constantly going back for more of Steve Washington's thick bass. According to the album sleeve, he also played drums on this. Funky guy! His former band, Slave, was kick ass too. This is like a gritty take on their hit "Just A Touch Of Love".
I think the Bass player is Buddy Hankerson. He played with Slave, Young and Company, and Aurra. UA-cam is name and look at some of his vids. Very good funk bassist.
In 1981 "The Miller Players" won a dance contest off this song at Screamin' Wheels roller rink in Gary, Indiana !!! Will always love this song...!! Yeeeah !!
I have no ideal who has new music out nowadays. I have all old school music downloaded on my phone and I watch youtube at work. Some how I feel like i'm the big winner.
1981... I was in the 8th grade Big Gina "Moms" had 1979 Monte Carlo Landau...Brandy Wine Red with white interior and white 1/4 vinyl top. Playing this with her arm out the window...the day you realize your Mom is cool...lol
Starlena, the female lead singer, met and married JT Taylor (lead singer) of Kool & the Gang shortly after the release of this song. They've been married probably 20 yrs now and they have a teenage son. Starleana uploaded a couple videos on UA-cam showing the son playing the acoustic guitar I believe.
oh yes bring back memories I love this song thanks DJkrushinphx I remember when this first came out. this was back in the day when everybody was cool nobody mean mugg'n noone just have'n fun and just kick n it. man he is kill'n that baseline.
This jam still sound as good today as it did back in 1979. Slave/Aurra/Steve Arrington was vastly underrated. I love those guys! Too bad Drac and Mark Adams had to die too soon.
Let's see if I remember this correctly; Aurra spun out of the group Change and then their lead singer ended up in Slave where she anchored 2 of their greatest albums. If I'm wrong let me know.
When I was at The Club w/dance floor, and I saw what was going on at 1:34 and then again at 2:51 of the video; the beautiful women dancing to the super-smooth music, it was irresistible. And what made it difficult to sit through "Are You Single" is those beautiful women would come and pull me on to the dance floor!
This song was originally recorded on Slave's album as a bonus hit, right before Slave broke up, thereby creating the other band Aurra ... which helped Steve Arrington to go solo as an artist. And that's a guaranteed BET.
Kool & The Gang have two greatest hits compilation, the first one was of course before JT's time & showcased their funk roots but lacked a top-notch crooner who could carry the group vocally. The second one was when Robert "Kool" Bell apparently felt that it was time for the group to recruit a front-man to help them reach a more musically diverse audience. Personally, I believe both compilations will help true fans appreciate their musical journey.

Me too! And Soul Train reruns!
Every generation feels the same. Your kids will say the same thing. Music changes, thank God we can reach back! Happy New Year!

That hellish situation formerly known as "junior high" had finally ended and the joys of high school had begun! This song helped usher in that era!
