That for him the stats weren't as important as those who inspired teammates to play for shirt, intangible leadership quality, and how Gerrard was perfect example of this and how he'd understand people preferring Gerrard or maldini. I think on two occasions Mourinho talked about playing Stevie G, Lampard and Makelele as a triangle in the midfield. Playing 4-2-2 was part of England’s problem. Mourinho knows Lampard best and had studied Gerrard closely. He would have known how to play them together with Makelele

I still miss gerrard, he wasn’t just a great player… He’s our Legend and Saviour, when I was a young Liverpool fan and our team was struggling I always looked towards Gerrard when he got the ball. He was an absolute warrior and an in replaceable captain. held up the whole of Liverpool sometimes single-handedly. If he was at any other top club I do believe he would be what Jude Bellingham is becoming for Real Madrid. A balon dor winner that saved our club from disaster more times than I can count ❤👊🏼
