Yeah, Brad. You don't always have to try and dissect the meaning of the lyrics. Does the damn thing make you want to move, cry, scream, or FEEL. Let it flow and vibe.
Vedder's lyrics are about a boy who finds out his father is actually his stepfather, and that his real father is dead. He later revealed that the song was "a work of fiction based on reality," and the chorus of "I'm still alive" was what he considered his curse, as he struggled to deal with the strained relationship with his stepfather and the fact that his real father was dead. In an episode of VH1's Storytellers, Vedder explained that the interpretation of the song had changed, as fans would react to the chorus by jumping around and celebrating - they heard "I'm still alive" as a positive thing, an affirmation of life. Said Vedder: "When they changed the meaning of those words, they lifted the curse."
Thank you for your great interpretation of the song I couldn't have said it any better myself been listening to this song with other first Reactions from other people reacting to alive and I hang my head down where some of these people just don't get it perhaps they should listen to the song with lyrics that's half of the reaction right there your other half is the music
Brad, that was a great way to describe Vedder's vocals! "I feel like it just falls out of his mouth." When he's singing low, that describes it perfectly.
I saw an interview with Eddie explaining that “ I’m still alive” was something that he wasn’t necessarily happy about. That was the jist of the song. But the fans changed it for him. They didn’t know the meaning, danced in the aisles, celebrating being alive, and changed the meaning for Eddie.
Yeah what's true in the lyrics is that his real father was someone he knew as a friend of the family. His mom told him the truth after his real dad died. Can't imagine what he must have felt like.
Eddie's not the dad in the first verse. The chorus where he sings, "I'm still alive," is him working through what his mom just told him. I think he's trying to see the positives by acknowledging that despite learning this harsh bit of news, at least he's still alive and can grow from this. At least that's what I get from the song.
I read an interview with Eddie when Ten came out, The song is actually part of a trilogy of songs on the album. Alive is about a mother having sex with her son because he resembles his father. The next song in it is Once, which is the guy kind of losing it, and the last is Oceans, where he dies I believe.
This song took on another meaning for me when Eddie became the last surviving member of what was considered the "big four" of his generation. I know there was, and are, other great singers from this time but it is still a sad reminder of how much talent we have lost far too soon. Stay safe Eddie and RIP Kurt, Chris and Layne.

Brad, you gotta relax and not take it so seriously! Lean back and let your defenses down. But it’s really just about soaking up some of that emotion and chilling. This is like jamband grunge. Just groove to it and breathe. 😎

Alive was written as the first part of a trilogy. As mentioned in earlier comments, the song was inspired by true events in Eddie's life. However, the part about the mom and son being In an incestuous relationship is entirely fictional. The second song in the trilogy (also fictional) sees the son now grown and on a murder spree. The final tune takes place in a prison cell as he awaits execution. Pretty gnarly stuff.
The second verse and the 2nd and 3rd song were inspired by a story Eddie read in a San Diego newspaper where a kid was raped by his mother because of how much he looked like his father, and because of the trauma that he went through, he started going on a murdering spree, targeting prostitutes... until he is finally caught and put on death row awaiting his execution.

I'm SO glad that I got to see them in their prime! I went to see the Chili Peppers with Smashing Pumpkins in New Orleans back when Blood Sugar Sex Magic & Gish had just dropped. We got to the auditorium and learned that a third band was opening the show... an unheard of little band called Pearl Jam. Words just can't describe how good they were that night! I saw them a few more times during that period, and they were always great, but THAT night was just special. They were young and hungry, and they just blew the roof of the place! I can't say that PJ "stole the show" because all three bands were on top of their game at that point in time, but they were definitely the band that we went home raving to all of our friends about! A few short months later they were one of the biggest bands in the world, but I'll never forget that night in '91when they were third on the bill and giving it their all. We knew we had all just witnessed something special, and it was simply magical.
This might sound weird but his voice reminds me of a massage. How the therapist makes an effort to always keep one hand or one point of contact on you at all times. He keeps his vocal cords activated and seamlessly moves from one note to the next
Pearl Jam is life. When you are a baby, you are nourished by your parents and raised with their wisdom as your intelligence. As you get older, you become a young person/teenager and it occurs to you that maybe you came up with it all yourself. Later, when you have kids of your own...you look back at your parents with new eyes and a more empathetic understanding. That's what "Alive" is...and what the album "Ten" is in general. It happened so long ago in your evolution that you MIGHT be able to take it for granted, but time will humble you and make your remember that older/wiser people shaped your life and helped you to see. Pearl Jam is life.
He grew up thinking his step dad was his dad, by the time he was told who his real dad was. He had already passed away. He had only met him briefly as a child, and his dad was introduced as a friend of the family. Basically this song was written in anguish after realising his dad was dead, and he was still alive, and he had never had the opportunity to get to know him. He felt a certain guilt for still being alive, almost like he was screaming it to his dad, to God. He had to go through the anguish and anger and eventually acceptance that he had been lied to about something so important. The song eventually changed for him because of his fans singing it back at his concerts, and it went from him feeling suicidal to celebrating still being alive. He is one of the few 90s frontmen who didn’t succumb to drug and alcohol addiction. He was always a special one.
When Eddie was young and growing up, he never knew his Mother remarried and he thought the "New Man" was his birth Father. At age thirteen he had a talk with his Mother and she explained the situation and informed him that his real Father was dying from some illness. I don't think he ever met his real Dad before the guy died. For the song title- I kind of take it like all the pain and trauma he had been through, he is saying "I'm Still Alive,"
LMAO! You know, the movie Ted made some fun about how a lot of 90s bands sounded alike, even though they each DID have their unique sound. The vocalists did all have a lot in common, though. I remember not really liking it at the time, but it's grown on me over the years. This is the music MY generation made. I just wasn't really into it at the time. I'm glad I've gained an appreciation for it over the years.
This is Eddie's story, finding out that the family friend is actually his dad, he then leaves home and heads to Cali, a few years later when the opportunity to "interview" for singer, he writes this song in 1 night and is the song he performs for them... The rest is history.
I love Lex's reactions. I react to the music first then the lyrics. If the music captures me that's enough. Love her answer to "I don't know what its about"..."not important."...every time I hear this song I close my eyes for the outro solo and raise my fists in the air like the old pearl jam alive stick man logo and just get lost in the music.
A mom told her son his father was dead but he was actually still alive. True story. It's what this song is still about. That's why the lyric "I'm still alive".
Lex gets it again. Religion aside, raising our heads and leaning back to the music that moves us is a feeling of comfort and safety. Of surrender and the confidence of protection of those around us while we feel what moves us. Exposing the throat and belly is the ultimate show of vulnerability and comfort that those around us "have our back".
Mookie Blaylock was also Pearl Jam’s original band name. He was #10 for the Sonics, their hometown team and Mook was their favorite. So funny to have that unique touch to this perfect album.
One of the best bands to see live. I have a couple of songs of them on my UA-cam account I filmed at a music festival in 2015 they were headlining. Amazing performance!
I was 17 when this came out. Grunge (in particular Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden) make up the soundtrack of my teenage years. It's awesome that 30 years on a younger generation is still appreciating and discussing it.
this is at the heart of my style . i love playing this solo . to me , this is kind of a signature solo of mine . like "pink floyd or eagles" class lead guitars .
It's funny how you can have a song you've considered a favorite for decades and still not feel like you fully understand it. Pearl Jam songs in general always feel like that to me no matter how many times I read interpretations and band members' testimonials. And it will still be a favorite several decades into the future.
This song starts a story that continues through "Once" and "Footsteps" called Mamasan. In the first verse, a young man is told by his mother that who he thought was his father was not actually his father, and that his real father had died when he was 13. In the second verse, it's revealed that the mother has developed a romantic relationship with her son, since he reminds his mother of his father. The young man is left screwed up -- feeling cheated out of a relationship with his dad, resenting his mom, and wondering if he should've been the one to die instead. The first verse is somewhat autobiographical. Eddie Vedder really did discover as a young man that his step-dad was not his father, and that his real father had died when he was a teen, having never been a part of his life. The rest, however, is just a story.
Eddie has said that the first verse is about how the person that he grew up thinking was his dad was not really his dad. His real dad was a family friend that he knew, but never had a real relationship with and he didn't find out who his real dad was until after his real dad had died.
Best song, the whole cd is bad to the bone. I remember sitting in a friend's S-10 and he had one 8 inch sub and played this song. I couldn't breathe at all the bass was off the charts. Ahhhhh, the days of good sound systems that we built back in the day were off the hook
Hey yall, I never listened to the guitar from Peal Jam until lately! And when I watched this video I heard HENDRIX!! all throughout Stone Gossard's solo for the first after all these years! WOW!!!!
When the members were forming this band, they we looking for a singer. Chad Smith (of Red Hit Chili Peppers) told them about a guy he knows in San Diego can sing really well. Name of Eddie Vedder. So they sent Vedder three songs they had made, and asked him to write lyrics, record them, and send them back. This was one of them. Needless to say, he got the job.🙂
Love lex's facial expressions during instrumental (and eddie's voice harsh moments) parts. That was SOOO similar to my subcounscious expressions during good music😁👌👏👏
It is cool to see you kids do this for rock music. I’m always interested in hearing what kids think of music of my era, 60’s -80’s. This song came out in a time of anger for some youths of the early 90’s. It was called grunge. Eddie Vedder attitude and voice is epic. I subscribed to your channel too.
My friend pretty much lived this song; except he met his dad right before he died. His dad wasn't a bad person, his mom was just super religious and his dad was not. His mom was an alcoholic to an extreme and just hid the truth. It literally pushed him over the edge and he had a psychotic breakdown. They say there is a fine line between insanity and genius; and my friend had an IQ of 162. Our high-school had everyone tested for IQ. We got the highest scores, but were not the best students, because we gave up on learning the same thing over. My IQ is only 152 in comparison. Two points can make a huge difference, and dude had ten on me. They drugged him up, and he hasn't been the same since. The drugs that were supposed to help him only hurt him. He quit taking them and lived with me, had a job doing well, and then they basically kidnapped him when his mom found out he wasn't taking his meds (police came and ARRESTED him, and threw him in a mental institution, for no reason. They forced the meds back on him. He was in his early twenties, but his mom worked for the government), and he has been messed up ever since. He looks through you, instead of being able to look you in the eyes, and is now truly insane because of the meds they have him on. He was never a danger to himself or others. The most passive guy you could meet. Now he is just a shell of his former self. We were friends since the third grade. I am not allowed to have contact with him, because I am listed as a liability to his mental health by the courts. He had all kjnds of money he never tapped inot, because he wanted to save it for his future. They stole it all.
Eddie said on stage that the song I’m still alive was about him. His mother told him that the man he grew up thinking was his father, was not his father. And that his actual father was dead. The “I’m still alive” was his reflection of his situation. Like ok you just told me my real dad is dead…but I’m still alive…how am I supposed to process this??? He then said that hearing fans belt out the chorus in a celebratory way “lifted the curse” and it became a positive song for him instead of a heavy burden
It is "I am hurt, I'm still alive". And the lyrics are quit explicit enough to know what this is about. I can somewhat relate as I had a father who was clearly not being able to be a father in every sense and how that effects all the aspect of your life.
This is the first of the Mamasan trilogy of songs the other 2 being once and footsteps, basically a story a bout a dysfunctional relationship between mother and son

I've always thought that Eddie's voice is the best instrument in the band. That's saying a lot because Mike does some incredible guitar solos.
This song is absolutely amazing live….
Once off the same album is a great song. Perfect way to open 10.
You two souls are beautiful and your inner-light shines bright

Should check "Do the Evolution" from them.. Awesome song and epic music video.
One of my favorite guitar solos ever.
Marvelous summation by Lex. Accept that you are still here, alive, living. Also, the cleansing baptism of music.
I think just like our taste buds or clothing style changes as we grow so to does the frequencies of the music we listen to.
Ted~“You and me, we got no place to go-hoo.” 😂 🐻
Brilliant song by a brilliant band and one of the greatest guitar solos to exist.
When I was in High school, 88-92, I would get clean in the shower listening to Led, Kashmir. Turned up to 11. Everyday!!!!
Lex, that is how everyone else in the world sings Pearl Jam. Amazing job Hahah
Grunge started with Pearl Jam! A new wave of rock and roll!
I was 15 when grunge came out. These songs were easy to relate to as a teenager. Gives an idea what gen x was going through in life.
This song is one act of a 3-part trilogy about one character- the Mamasan Trilogy. The other two songs in the trilogy are 'Once' and 'Footsteps'.
Now I can't see, I just stare. - Good poetry gives you a whole head/heart full of meaning with very few words.
Mike McCready is one of the most underrated guitarists of the 90's.
Pearl jam and nirvana's MTV UNPLUGGED are 2 of the greatest gigs ever. 🏴✌🫂
Eddie has said that the first verse is about how the person that he grew up thinking was his dad was not really his dad. His real dad was a family friend that he knew, but never had a real relationship with and he didn't find out who his real dad was until after his real dad had died.
I love the dichotomy of reactions between you two. Realization and Feeling.
God I miss the Grunge days, it was this little short encapsulated moment of sheer quality music.
One of the iconic grunge songs
Everytime i recommend to listen to pearl jam songs from their performance on mtv unplugged. Best live performance ever, quality talking.
"Everybody likes waterfalls" lmao...well said!!
“But I’m glad we talked”
Sure makes a lot more sense here than ‘but I’m playing guitar’
Lex: "Some stuff just makes you, like, 'MMMM!'"
Brad: "I don't think I've ever done that in my life."
Really? I'm shocked.
Pearl Jam is always nice to hear
My favorite pearl jam song!
I enjoyed 80s music but I think bands like this ushered in a new era of rock for the 90s.
Just came across your channel! Been going down the rabbit hole on your videos. I love that you do different genres and years. Absolutley amazing
Great song👍 now hit Jeremy, Rearview Mirror, Dissident,Porch,Oceans. Bangers!!
OH MAN THIS SONG TAKES ME BACK!
I still have my orginal CD from '91. Amazing CD from start to finish
BTW, Lex, your grunge aesthetic here is also top notch. And purification: YASS WOMAN.

Lex has that Stevie Wonder head bob going!!!
I'm a lifelong musician yet the two of you give me access to deeper musical insight, Thanks.
I love how Lex doesnt really care about lyrics! You can tell by her eyes when Brad asked who's the daddy and she's like whaaat?
This is the first of the Mamasan trilogy of songs the other 2 being once and footsteps, basically a story a bout a dysfunctional relationship between mother and son
"Everyone likes waterfalls" is not the quote I thought I'd walk away with from this episode but yeah it's pretty true
