  • Just out of prison after serving 6 years and earning a law degree, Martin "Kaz" Kazinski (Ron Leibman) tries to get a job with his idol Sam Bennett's law firm. He stays and plays drums with friends at a music club. Sam (Patrick O'Neal) recommends him for a seemingly trivial mugging case which may make or break his chances with the firm. Also stars Erik Kilpatrick, Nicholas Pryor and Sharon Cintron. The preview for following week episode is "A Little Shuck And A Whole Lotta Jive."
There is alot of misinformation online about episode names and airdates. Actual TV listings indicate the pilot was aired as the first season (unnamed) episode, not in April. The pilot opening credits and music are slightly different from the rest of the series. Also, the club owner Irving would be replaced with Malloy for the season. Special thanks for researching the actual airdates in old newspaper listings by a member of CHFB.

Fred Karlin seems to be into a jazzy score for dramas while other composers were more "mainstream," like Jerrold Immel (Dallas, Knots Landing) or Mike Post (Rockford Files, Hill Street Blues, Hunter). His scores for other genres seem to be sorta similar as opposed to other more mainstream composers who managed to live through it all.

Maybe that's why he wasn't as popular and more of a niche composer? Perhaps "jazzy" or jazz-style would be a better description? I'm not sure his music sounds like "jazz" as opposed to his approach. His horror, sci-fi and feature film music isn't "jazz" but seems to have the same style. Plus alot of his music was limited to the 1970s. Composers who lived over several decades adjusted their music to different styles over those decades. Fans of certain composers think they were unique when they were actually following a fashion trend.
