I recently bought this model as well. I am also upgrading it to the cohesion 3D boards to run light burn. The price for the upgrades is minimal but the quality of the wiring and work is not so good. Some of my wires were shoved into the pin connector on top of the original wires. Some of these white wires that were added as the upgrade literally fell out. There is a liberal amount of hot glue everywhere holding everything in. The water temp sensor is just taped to rubber tube. The other one is just hanging over the power supply. It’s worth it to get you going faster but the workmanship is shoddy.
Got the same thing from EBay before Christmas and got it less than 1 week for 301. Awesome machine. Needed some mirror alignment but. Dry happy abt the upgrade
how did you connect the 2 temperature sensors. Just got this one and working on setup. Does the water one just go in the bucket? And I have no idea where the power temp sensor goes. How did you do yours?
I got mine just about a month ago and it is literally the exact same one. I was impressed with how little I had to mess with anything to actually get going compared to some of the things I had heard in the past. Im planning on doing the air assist mod right away. And based on how well that goes, I may even upgrade the carriage design with linear rails for smoother movement. The cheap wheels that the carriage uses now kind of concerns me.
Looks like we ordered a very similar setup. Mine has a different panel, but same color and mirrors also came in pretty much aligned. Didn't fiddle around at all, although mine had some kind of adhesive goop over the adjustment screws and the third mirror clip. Been working on it for the last few days and it's been excellent. Added one of the adjustable cloud Ray laserheads and it let me go faster and use less power for whatever reason, but I'm happy with it.
Hello, Why did you add one of the adjustable cloud Ray laserheads, to put the air assistant on it? Which model of laserheads did you buy? I just bought one of these machines and I want to cut certain small parts and I would like to add the air assistant. How did it work for you? Thanks for the info.
Thanks you so much for the video, I was debating on which version I should buy, because there is so much information available for modding the older versions. This video helped me make up my mind and I ordered mine today.
One thing to note with this version of the K40 is that the tube is shorter (and therefore probably contains less gas) than the standard model. This means that you need to be especially conservative with power on this model. The digital control panel is NOT a percent of the power the tube can handle. You really need to add an analog ammeter to it to know how much power is actually being fed in. On my machine, 28% is 20mA, the maximum safe power for the 720mm long tube. Apparently it varies a lot machine to machine though. Regardless, run it at 100% for long and it will definitely die prematurely. And with the shorter tube I'd limit your current to a bit less than that even.
I got the same machine.. Mine came the mirrors were align, yes.. But the frame was not.. My 2nd mirror kept hitting the side wall.. So, had to realign everything.. The wires going go the laser were just wrapped and caulked or taped.. I had to Solder them.. When I have to put a new tube in later, I'll install connectors.. The ground wires inside the machine were not grounding to the frame.. I had to take them off and grind down that area for them to connect. In the meantime while I was figuring things out.. I messaged those that I bought it from.. Did all the tests they asked.. They sent me a new laser tube.. lol.. While it was on its way I figured out the ground and the sucky wiring.. But I was still working on the frame. I had to 3D print a part and get a little diode laser that I could fit in the tip of the CO2 laser, so I could align the frames. Got it all going.. I learned a lot.. So, it was worth the troubles.. But still sucked. Now it is a running machine.. Had to design my own air assist, since all others really sucked.. But now I am happy.. Just got my water flow detector.. I got to install it soon..
Noticed you've scaled up. Who did you buy the 60 from? Did you have to make any mods? If you had to do it again would you would have went straight to the 60?
Hi, I just got this exact machine a couple of days ago. Added the and air assist and I cut down the vent so I can get more cutting area. I took out the material clamp because everyone said it was a waste of time. My machine came with a loose black cable with a pin on one end. It is connected to the temperature meter. looks like a temperature meter for inside the cabin. It looks like it was dislodge during shipping. Can someone help me with where this should be located. I also connected a ground wire to the red knob on the back and tied it into an existing earth ground outside of my garage. Can someone let me know if this is a safe way to ground the machine. I am going to check the laser alignment but I need to know the number to set it on the digital readout. (0.0.0)? I am not going to fire this thing up until I know it's safe. I also bought gallons of RV winterize coolant so my equipment don't freeze up and crack the laser tube and also cools it at the same time. Please let me know if this is also safe and won't destroy the laser
well i have bought the same machine as you....i have come across a guy that says that this machine does not have the 40w laser output. It says that the tube should be 70 cm long and in this machine it is 60 cm long....is this true?
Nice upload, im pretty sure if you look under that temp gauge you will find a jumper, pull it out and it will be in F Marry Christmas to you and your loved ones.
@Thumper J I do have a k40 like this along with the Analog version (With the dial) if you are planning on getting the digital one, I would suggest you spend the 15$-20$ on Amazon and get one of those PC water cooling temp gauge and replacing it, the one that comes with the K40 is only battery power without a backlight and the sensor is taped to the outside wall of the tube, pretty much useless, If you are planning on doing any kind of mod to the k40 such as changing the controller board and such, Just get the Analog version, they are much easier to mod with less useless junk to deal with.
I have been thinking about buying a K40 and I understand that you should use distilled water, but now that winter is coming, I was thinking about running lines outside to the water bucket to keep it cold. Can I use antifreeze instead of water so it doesn't freeze up? Thanks!
Thank. Just purchased one. I wondered if this new one would work with a k40. I have 2 other lasers as well. the bigger Chinese versions. I owned the original k40. Sold it many years ago. I just wanted to see how they have improved.
well i have bought the same machine as you....i have come across a guy that says that this machine does not have the 40w laser output. It says that the tube should be 70 cm long and in this machine it is 60 cm long....is this true?
Where did you get your 60W? I'm looking to buy something similar, but shipping from China is prohibitively expensive ($2000!) and all the units available here in Canada are twice the cost of even that ($6000+).
Thanks for making a video on this new version. Could you tell me where the two temperature sensors connect to? And will the digital displays for them always be on because of the batteries? Would be nice if they were wired in. I've been thinking about getting K40 for a while. When I saw this one with the upgrades, particularly the built in fan, I had to do it. I hope my mirrors are already aligned too. Fingers crossed.
The temp displays are battery powered, the machine comes with the two batteries. Basically same ones you would put in a watch. The red dot is wired to the power supply along with the LED strip in the back. and yes, they will remain on as long as the batteries are in, even if the machine is off. I've had mine for about 3 weeks, they're still on. Batteries seem to last a little while. The temp display is also very accurate when it comes to providing temperatures.
@@kwoodkustoms Thanks. Did you temp displays come connected at the probe end. The water one on mine came taped to the water line at the firing end of the laser tube, but the power one isn't connect at the probe end. Where is yours connected? To the PSU?
One question > did you have to sort out any problems with the earth wire ? (Ground wire) as I've just got the so-called updated 40watt machine only I spotted a problem with the earth wire ( there was "two rubber washer's" placed between the blue powder coated body preventing the wire from doing what it was there for ) basically the machine wasn't grounded as you say in the US but a bit of sandpaper and removal of the washer's sorted it - so if there is anyone thinking about getting a K40 check the wiring because I also had two wire's twisted together and wrapped in insulation tape ( that's another addition to modifications) And how they can be sold on Amazon being a deathtrap as they can be I'll never know, oh! My one didn't have a ammeter it is digital so I've had to buy one but Doe's have a built in fan "not the pathetic misfitting thing the older models had that everyone used duck tape to try and solve its faults. Anyway brilliant little video. From the UK.
Sorry if I missed it: How do the widths compare? I have heard the upgraded versions can’t hold tubes as long as the older models. My understanding is that the older ones can hold up to 720 mm, but this might have something shorter than 700 mm.
That is correct. The newer model is more petite and has a shorter tube, but the work area in the machine is the same; 12”x8”. I have not really noticed that this has effected the performance very much.
Hello, Could you give us the measurements of the laser head of the machine? It is that I just bought one and I would like to think about buying the head with support for air intake and perhaps a better quality of mirrors and lenses. thanks for the info.

In k40 Whisperer, youll see the dots next to the up, down, left, and right arrows. Just click on the dots and it will do a frame view for you. This feature is not available in other k40 softwares that ive tried, such as laser draw 3, corel draw, etc.
@@kwoodkustoms Thank you, I know about these, you have to click each and every one... I thought there is one function which does the whole frame/contour for you. Cheers.
This machine does not come with an air assist. Me personally, I don't see it necessary unless you are actually cutting, and cutting with a k40 is not very good. I only use it for engraving and I cut with my 60w. But if you still want to, you'll have to install one.
Hey so I also want to engrave similar phone cases. But I was wondering if the bed you are using is low enough so that it´s in focus. Also, do you recommend air-assist when engraving them or can it be done later down the road. Thanks in Advance
I would not recommend an air assist unless you are planning to actually cut material. With engraving, it isn't necessary. But if you want to cut material I would get a 50w or a 60w, not a k40. Not good for cutting and your machine wont last. Lastly, I don't take the focus very serious with the k40, only with bigger machines.
