I remember surfing this place alone in November of 1998. A big storm came through and I was driving in a torrential downpour to get there in a leaky old 84 Toyota Corolla. I pulled up just as the rain backed off and there was a lonely chest high wave reeling down the point. I surfed it all by myself until a few other guys caught on and paddled out. Great vibe and just trading off wave for wave for hours. One of the happiest days of my surfing life 🥰
I remember that. My favourite memory was pulling up at end of that same storm in November. When the sea calms down and you get these super clean sets. I decided to chance it even though I only had an hour before I had to go get the missus when she got off work. I Parked up the civic, grabbed the mal and old boy "Richie, aka Son of A Bitchie" (my golden lab German Shepherd mongrel) . Stashed the keys in between some kelp and some rocks and Ritchie waited on the shore chasing gulls' and i just hit it. Mate you wouldn't believe it. So stoked. But fortunate at how lucky I am to be there. There were a few c**ts out but ya gotta expect that. I was only out for about 25 mins but best surf i've had in a long time. Went in an Richie was spewing barking at me like what's taking ya so long, though i bet he loved it being that free on the beach chasing gulls. He has more freedom than me these days aye the c**t. Anyway, don't mean to hijack ya comment, i get it... bloody great that memory of yours. Love this spot!
Mate I was lucky enough to go surfing here for high school sport (Melville High - Kempsey). 1993 - 1994 Got a few big storm swells in that time too - so good!
1998 i left Sweden for 6 month, Bali Aussie-perth-south coast and up to Brisbane in our camper van.. Australia is so incredble beautiful i almost cry thinking of it... In my next life i want to be born on a beach not a snowy mountain country.. i`ll have a chat with god about that when time comes.. Aussies, enjoy your country, start use it, travel more......
@@mikesearson6909 Haha my wife and I did just that! We went from Aussie beaches to Scandinavian Winters for nearly ten years! So grateful for the adventures, but the grass is no greener, just different on the other side. That said I am so glad to be back home and I will likely never leave the warm sunny waters of Aussie land again now.
I’m a pommie and I learnt how to surf down the road at big hill. 25 years later and Im still surfing. I remember how beautiful this area was. Not many people but lots of big fish.

I was the first person to surf this joint in the early 1940's on the worlds first 3 fin i made myself out of WW1 spitfire wing i flew back from the war. Ya not wring about all the sharks there too, i punched 4 of them in the summer of '42. I got one wave from right round the corner all the way to the sand then up the creek right back to my camp site. Stepped off and then put me thongs on, walked straight to the pub and punched out every bloke that didnt see my wave. Some bloke called Simon asked me about the fin setup, I gave him the board and said it goes shit, I reckon 4 fins will go better.

I actually flew a prototype MK69 Spitfire in a secret program I'm not meant to talk about in WW1, we didn't release it till 1936, same year I dated Jean Harlow. You know your history, I like you buddy, I'll let you buy me a beer one day.
Surfed crescent many times (so beautiful) and the back road spots. Saw the cockraoches (original wiggles) at the crescent head club. Met my wife, a Kempsey girl and now live in Perth. Gr8 for kiteboarding. Gotta love your life. 🤟👌👍
Man, I miss those days. I remember in the 70s and 80s when surfing wasn't a mainstream thing and not everyone and their dog was "a surfer." So many great days with core locals, respect for one another, and a comparatively more relaxed vibe. Seems as though the commoditisation of surf culture and the internet/social media exposure has led to a rapid saturation of the sport to the extent that I now have a very hard time trying to motivate myself to paddle out when it's crowded. In my mind, it doesn't even feel like real surfing. It's mostly wasting time hassling and jockeying for position to be able to actually surf a wave (the reason I even paddled out). Feels like a contest mentality or like sitting in traffic when wankers cut up the inside and try to pass you from the far left lane. As much as I LOVE surfing, it's become a bit more work these days to find a relaxed and peaceful session. But anyway.... 😂

Why are people paddling back to the point not walking? I had alot of fun surfing here back in 2011, I had my van at the end of that bridge and spent a week surfing here.
This footage was on a Saturday morning just after a lockdown so probably more than usual but plenty of surfing solitude to be had on the east coast if you know we’re to look.
We were in lockdown for 6 weeks at Broken Head. Daily crowds of 50, 60+ in the water. I know you can find spots, but it is manic. Forgot to say, great video though👍

Contrast is a powerful thing. Many people who grow up on beaches end up moving to the mountains. All about perspective

All sounds totally legit apart from one crack in your tale... the spitty wing wasn't surfable until WW2
