Ah Conrail, one of the greatest railroads to grace American Rails...
the one that saved the american rails too
it was federal owned by are government !
Well, Good bye to our old friend :(
For the Erie it wasnt
Sorry. Disgrace American rails. 2 great railroads forced to combine into one monstrosity.
As someone from the Northeast, Conrail was Our Railroad. It was based here, served us well and was the true inheritor of the fabled Pennsy's history. From the red class lights on the EMD locomotives in this video to the signal bridges and position light signals and even the color of ballast used, Conrail kept the Pennsy alive. Conrail was a friendly and busy railroad and is sorely missed in this era of Precision Scheduled Railroading downsizing and motive power/ signal conformity and boredom. Long Live Big Blue. We miss you.
Conrail went right by RailfanDepot HQ... we too miss Big Blue!!
Live on CONRAIL MAIN LINE for 10 years. Miss Big Blue. Sd40-2s FOREVER. ! ! ! 😎
At 6:52 The engineer flipped off the camera crew
Actually the conductor was the one who flipped off the camera, the engineer gave the camera crew a little horn salute lol. Other than that it's pretty funny seeing that.
@@rodney.t9082 oh. At the time I wrote this comment I must have forgot the engineer sits in the other seat.
@@Blixt1000 Haha yeah it's all good man, i also though the same thing years ago. It always seems to be the conductors that are unhappy and i don't know why lol
Rodney T they’re unhappy because they aren’t engineers :)
he actually waves, you need to watch the actual video
Note: Conrail still exists, but most of it acts as a service provider for NS and CSX. I've seen 2 Conrail engines down here in Charleston already.
Yep. Lots of action in New Jersey and Detroit as part of the "Shared Assets" Conrail.
@@Railfandepot i always see Con rail work trucks all of the times the guys and woman work very very hard all around the clock every day good weather and bad weather and on weekends to
Chesapeake & Seaboard Productions what numbers?
@@barrylonyai1530 I've seen ex Conrail truck trailors. I'm not sure how common they are but I've seen at least one.
I remember always seeing Conrail locomotives while driving past Elizabeth Seaport on the NJ Turnpike.
We used to have conrail here in nyc
Nothing more conrail than bright blue EMD’s with blasting rs3ls
❤️🥺 Seems like that's the way it is lately, here today and going tomorrow..
Will continue to look ahead, NOT down and NOT back..
Keep up the great work, wonderful videos,
Makes me remember my brother on the Santa Fe for 17 years..
Alot of those 'Blues" use to be reading railroad engines!!!
From green to blue! Thanks for watching. -DeAnn
There will never be another Conrail...
We definitely miss Big Blue! -DeAnn
oh man conrail, brings back memories of being a kid and watching the blue going down the tracks in Anderson and Alexandria Indiana. in Alexandria had tracks right behind the house. ft wayne to anderson. always got to see ol blue usually pulling cars or car parts.
Yep, I vaguely recall the Pennsylvania Railroad in action, but Conrail - that was my jam!
@@Railfandepot I was born too late to see PRR, im a 82 model so yeah. i arrived in time to see a lot of track abandoned around Anderson. lot of the old Pensy line is gone now. i have tiny memory of the old rail spur that cut off from the north line that went into abc rail in north anderson that cut across broadway just south of ames st.
@@Dratchev241 I live in Southern PA and not too far from where I live is the remains of a section of ex Pennsylvania/Penn Central/Conrail track from the 1890s. It's owned and run by Norfolk Southern today and serves as a cutoff for freight traffic from Morrisville to Trenton NJ. The PRR used to use it to move main line freight traffic from Harrisburg to New York City without having to go through Philadelphia.
@@nickt.2238 nice. NS has the old conrail track north of me and CSX has the old big 4 track that goes to Indianapolis.
The Pennsy signal in Haysville was taken down in September of 2019, along with all other intermediate signals on this section of the Fort Wayne Line.
NS 5350 Did you have Pittsburgh Line Blues on DVD?
I just came across this video ... Subscribed!!! 👍
i love conrail
Agreed! Thanks for watching! -DeAnn
Great video clip 💯
Thank you very much! I appreciate the positive comment - and you watching the video. 😀 -DeAnn
@@Railfandepot You bet! Thank you for uploading quality content for all of us to enjoy. - Cuco (Koo-koe) 😃
I like so much conrail trains
I remember this trains from the 1980's in Lebanon County PA
Oh yes, Conrail would have been all over that area! -DeAnn
Amazing footage!!
Thanks, it is a super DVD!!
Miss the Conrail blue
Me too! Where I live (and grew up) and it was everywhere. And now...CSX Blue/Yellow/Grey. It's not my favorite. But...it's still a train! 😀👍 Thank you for watching! -DeAnn
*Conrail was my passion in the US railroad world.*
Big Blue was a fantastic railroad to follow... it went too fast!
@@Railfandepot - Yes. Its end came too fast much prior to I have the chance of visiting the USA. I guess there are few remaining rail stock still bearing the big blue livery.
@@Flyermac Yes, CSX and NS repainted the Conrail rolling stock very quickly. Norfolk Southern does have a diesel painted in heritage Conrail colors.
@@Railfandepot i never seen a NS Heritage unit i didnt know they existed lol
i am bricked up right now
I miss Conrail
As an ‘Ex Con’, I thoroughly enjoyed this video…..thank you for sharing it.
Yes I think that Conroe is a real winner yes. I have a 1/87 A.CHAL gauge Conroe several of them like GP -40s and such like that thank you.
Scott Pool -conrail
This railroader misses you CONRAIL! 😖😖😭
We do too! Even though it was a simple "dip-blue", it was a great paint scheme on a great railroad. If things had been much different, Conrail is what Penn Central could have been. -DeAnn
Nice channel. Think I'll subscribe
Thanks!! More videos coming very soon!
What a great video
Thanks. Conrail is missed around here that is for sure!!
I really like your videos I just wish they were longer.
Get the DVD 😉
Great video keep up good work
Thank you... we plan on keeping it up! More videos soon! :-)
hi great video my uncle worked for Con rail back in the late 1970s and 1980s early mid 1990s he Retired he worked in north jersey and staten island long island and new york and Brooklyn .what ever happened to the blue cabooses Con rail had.
I imagine the Conrail switching area (North and South Jersey Shared Assets) still have some cabooses, but most are no doubt scrap now.
@@Railfandepot not true they always got vandalized very badly and set on fire and people would strip the metal off off them and kids would brake the windows and destroy the whole insides of them and spray painted the inside and outsides of them they just let them rot and waste and just go to a trashed grave and scrap them of what was left of them it is very very upsetting to see them disappear ! my girl friend and myself had some very very good and intimate times in the cabooses and dates it is sad you are so use to seeing the caboose being the last car on he rail line going by by ! they started using high tech sensors on the very last rail cars now this is the future my uncle is looking down right now and we miss him very very much .
@@barrylonyai1530 I am sure your uncle would miss the caboose on the end of the train too!
@@Railfandepot we miss it very much he had his basement train lay out and those were the olden golden old days gone by we went to big big train shows indoors and out doors and we loved every minute of it on weekends and the summers and long holidays kids today do not care about trains like my age group did today people just worry and do not even enjoy commuter trains and very very cash strapped Amtrak !
I've seen a few conrail cabooses before but the ones I've seen are white and all boarded up. You can still see where the lettering of Conrail was though. I believe the cabooses get used as pushing platforms now. Unless those are gone now too. :(
I believe 5059 was involved in the Chase Marryland collision in 198-. Correct me if I am wrong.
I didn't know, so I looked it up. The locomotive was from this series (5000 to 5059), but I am not sure it was 5059. Thanks for watching! -DeAnn
nice video
Thanks! I want to do some more Conrail.
I remember conrail I miss those engines
Agreed. Big Blue was my favorite.
Awesome Video. I miss these days. On another note, Its pronounced Kearny (Car ~ Knee). Exit 15W, NJ Turnpike. Sadly I'm from Kearny 😜
Thanks for watching, and for the pronunciation guide! I do appreciate it. -DeAnn
@@Railfandepot Quite welcome. All good. Just messin'. Happy New Year
@@THEATREofPAIN270 I always try to file away correct pronunciations... I finally learned how to say Monongahela River! :-) -DeAnn
@@Railfandepot lol. I could never get that one either. 👍
will we never see conrail ever again? D:
Well, remember a small slice of Conrail still exists as a terminal road in the Philly area! Not the same, but it's something! -Tim
Hey at least they have a Heritige unit it’s not “all gone”
That's true...and NS had a nice looking Conrail unit! Thanks for watching. -DeAnn
@@Railfandepot np!
Poor Conrail :*(
I liked sp cnw and rio grande
All fallen flags now...they join so many others! Thanks for watching. -DeAnn
would of been cool if they kept sp conrail and Chessie System alive if they still had them tell this day
Oh yeah... I really liked Big Blue. It was what the NYC and PRR *should* have been.
Can you also talk about the ConRail U23B locomotive's?
That may be a tough nut to crack, I will need to look and see if we have any U23B in Conrail paint on film. They inherited those, right?... if so, so we may have some in pre-Conrail paint. I'll keep my eyes open.
According to a quick Google search conrail got their u23b from Penn central / Lehigh valley.
@@animenut69 Thanks... I thought it was the LV. I *think* we have some footage of U units (not sure what model) in LV paint. I will look! Thanks!!
Why is it going away? She will be missed R I P conrail you will be missed
That railroad would grace the American rails
We miss its paint schemes, but CSX and NS seem to be doing beautiful jobs on the former PRR/CR network.
True but sad
Its still exists as a switching conpany
@@RailPreserver2K Yep, in New Jersey and Detroit.
I remember Conrail on the NEC in New Brunswick nj
Conrail should make a comeback, they took over Penn central because this was a poor merger and it only lasted 10 years 1968-1978 Conrail took over PC and lasted until 1999. It’s a shame merged railroad didn’t succeed at least some of them.
Conrail was a huge success. So there was a lot of value in it...and that's why is was sold. I too miss Big blue. -DeAnn
@@Railfandepot Conrail was going to take over CSX because they did something really bad back in 2007
Put the whole video up...
Alas, the producer will not let us put the entire video up. But, you can get it at the link below. -DeAnn

Conrail is not really a "fallen flag". It was created by government in 1976 (to operate the failed, bankrupt - though essential - Penn Central), and was never meant to be an ongoing entity in perpetuity like a typical business. It was operated by the govt in hope it would someday be profitable, enough so that it could go back to private hands. In just 20 years, that's what happened, as both CSX and NS both bid for a now-very profitable Conrail. As a compromise, Conrail was split between the two roads in the late 1990s. A success story born from an epic failure.
I consider it a fallen flag in the sense that as a common carrier, mainline railroad - it no longer exists. Yes, it was owned by the government and it fulfilled its mission - but it was still a railroad. And, actually, it is *still* a railroad. A tiny part of Conrail still exists as a co-owned (CSX/NS) switching road in the congested Philly area. Thank you for watching! -DeAnn
How many trains a day did this line see? I’m guessing 100 plus easy
That is a good question. When Conrail had it, I don't know if it was 100 a day, but when the Pennsy had it? Hmmm! :-)
It was around 30-60 a day
A used ta live in Bethlehem Pennsylvania n A always see conrail trains running through Allentown/Bethlehem/Easton Pennsylvania every day after A graduated high in 1991 A put n application in the Bethlehem n Allentown unemployment office ta work for the railroad the Allentown Pennsylvania railyard wasn't far from where A lived in Bethlehem Pennsylvania only problem was A never heard from the railroad not a call r a interview that was ma dream job A now live in the South n am 49 now but ma dream is ta own n operate a steam train engine n have ma own steam train passenger train service but that's just a dream A know A will not get ta live n do ma dream job A would have loved it n love ta do ma dream job n A would have done ma dream job till ma last breath A wouldn't retire from ma dream job being a steam train engineer would be a dream come true for me 🤠🤠🤠😊😊😊
Daniel, Conrail was HUGE in your area of PA. That area was practically painted BIG BLUE. :-) Before that it was Lehigh Valley and others. We have some of that too. We'll see if can get some of that up for you. Thanks for watching. -DeAnn

Is conrail still operating now ?
Sorry for the delay in answering. As a mainline railroad, Contrail is no more...but, it still exists as a switching operation for owners NS and CSX in certain "Shared Assets" areas.
