    • @scubasteve7946

I think what they mean, is in that situation, the trailer could have easily pulled the pickup right off the road and flipped it also. Which is why I prefer to always have a rollbar in the pickup, also.
Not saying this was the case here, but sometimes guys put a 2" ball into a 2-5/16" coupler which will separate. I don't think he did that here, but possibly the coupler was bent internally or out of adjustment or something that just let it be just loose enough to slide up and off?

The manufacturer had bought all or made all couplers to 2 5/16 hitche standard and had installed a simple (permanent) cast insert to make their lighter car haulers 2” ball compatible (trailer stamped 2"). Luckily this one that failed fractured - broke and fell out as I was hooking up. It looks like Ben’s triple ball hitch is in 2” mode.

nice custom job, ben, good to see ur still with us, had very similar action packed adventure , only trailer stayed hitched, 180* on two lane interstate bridge, '70 el camino w/ skyhawk on towbar. took 6in. off front bumper b4 rear bumper gave towbar access to complete the 180. skyhawk received worst impact from center bridge rail, had to bolt spare on inside-out ,zero offset, tools, spares, scattered across both lanes, thankfully we only took up inside lane as semi right behind us had room to slither by flinging wrenches his tires picked up on way by. I'm sure ben can attest to quickness of the adventure and no time to get excited until its over n damage is done. always thankful for days we get to share the miraculous adventures n never ask how or why, just that we get to....

Just a thought on the heating problem. I had a small block Chevy 302 that just would not stay cool. I finally pulled it out and disassembled it. After measuring cylinder wall thickness with an echo device I found what we called, "Core Shift". When the block was originally machined it was not set in the machine correctly leaving two cylinders with thin walls. Boring it oversize had just made the problem worse. Back in the day it was common knowledge that only 1 out of 3 283 ci blocks could be bored .125 over. Good luck and stay safe.

Glad your safe Ben! ….paul, I wouldn’t be surprised if your overheating is coming from your intake placement. Heat gets trapped against the firewall, and your sucking hot air off the firewall you could cut and plumb the intake through a hole in the firewall so the intake is in the cab… if you got the room for the maf you can flip the intake manifold even so you have more room and less piping. Just a thought. Now that the intake tube is metal, after wheeling, pop the hood and touch the intake tube to see how heat soaked it is.

I'm sure it had trailer brakes but I'm wondering if it would be beneficial to have a big panic button that a driver can hit that would immediately lock up the trailer brakes and if that would make a difference???
In my head, it would seem that if the trailer breaks got locked up everything went straighten up in a jiffy.
Also, this is a great reason to put much heavier duty safety chains on trailers.
Those chains are often so small and so weak that they always break. Make sure you get some hardened, heavy duty, large link chains and replace those cheap ones.

Off-road people are about the only ones that look at a bad break or bad wreck as a chance to build something better. I sure am glad Ben is okay. That must have been a wicked wreck.
Don't bitch about bad luck, you guys are living an amazing life and have great family around you to do it.

Thankful that you are unscathed Ben. You know we all drive down the road, pulling trailers and not - sometimes bad stuff happens. Glad that it was just mechanical damages.

I see some Miller welders in the background now. I remember you used to have the Hobart. How about an updated tool and shop tour 🙏. What do you have, like, want.
Keep up the great work. Thanks for sharing and teaching!!

Referencing the mention of putting grease on the fuel tank grommet: Maybe a little helpful info - Whenever you want to lubricate rubber, don't use grease. It's a chemistry thing. "like dissolves like". So if it's grommets, tire beads, anything rubber, use soap. Grease will, over time, cause more trouble by eating away at the rubber. Hope this helps someone out who is unaware.

Hey guys about your gas line in the tank. You have to get the kind of gas line that is submersible. Regular gas line is only treated on the inside not on the outside. I hope this helps.

Glad Ben is OK. Really lucky the truck didn’t flip. I hid a bell under my brother’s truck. Drove him nuts for about 2 months. 🤣

I've rolled two trucks. You get to see if the roll cage works as designed. Good thing you guys know how to fix stuff. BFG's were the best tires I ever had, and that was 30 years ago.

Poor Ben, it broke my heart seeing his Jeep all twisted up like that, but it’ll give us another build to watch. Bigger, better, badder!
