- In this video I upgrade my front rotors and pads on my CTS VSport. The brakes are the same on most CTS, CT6, ATS, as well as Chevy Camaro SS (non 1LE) and Corvette Stingray. I also cover basic brake maintenance knowledge and how to choose a good pad and rotor.
The procedure highlights the steps to changing the pads and rotors on a 4 piston Brembo caliper and applies to many makes and models.

Whatever side you're working on turn the wheel to that side. It's amazing how much easier it is that way to get the caliper off and to easily torque them! This works with any vehicle.
Daniel, another great video. One critique, better way to get bolts off is to turn the wheels so you can access the bolts and have more leverage. Almost gave up, but the light bulb came on. Much better and easier experience. Turn the wheels!!! Keep broadening our knowledge of 2nd fastest car from Cadillac.

I was going to make a video for my 2014 new (to me) ATS, with the Brembo upgrade, but this video is so good there isn't a need to make another! I really like the side comments and tidbits of additional info you provide - awesome! I've chosen to replace the pads with the OEM Brembo ones - as I don't have overly heavy braking needs and I love that there's no dust. They weren't cheap: $180 - including the sales tax and delivery. I watched your jack points video and purchased the Potauto pinch-weld jack-pad puck. Finally I feel confident putting a floor jack under a pinch-weld - especially on my ATS - as the fit is so close and I wouldn't want to damage anything. The puck is a must have.

Thanks for another video. 2nd bedding procedure, give the car to your wife to take the kids to school. The only way I was able to get the front brakes to groan (I could never hear it before) was to bed the rear brakes and get some heat into them. And the most fun of having a CTS is just figuring out what brake parts are correct. In 2014 the sigma V was still in production which just adds to the confusion.

I just found out my base model ats with a NA 4 cylinder has brembos on it. They have the cadillac script on them, so I think they are factory installed. Just thought it was strange for a base model.Even stranger, when I ordered new pads and rotors, with out asking, they send the correct parts.
impact screwdriver makes removing rotor retaining screws easier. I have done jobs where they disintegrate.

Geat informative videos Daniel. Slightly off the subject but I have a '15 Cadillac XTS V sport with Brembo callipers too. I have two questions first, are the pads greased from the OEM? Secondly on the rear regarding the calliper pins, one has a grommet on it and the other doesn't, with the calliper mounted which calliper pin goes in the top position? TIA
Hi there, thanks. Yes pads should have been greased from the factory but it often "burns off" over time. As for the grommet, I'm having a hard time remembering one. Sometimes this is one of those things, where you take advantage of having two, and see how the other one was done. Hope this helps.
Hello: I have an ATS-V and I have seen all your videos. In this video you painted the calipers...how did you paint the letter V on the calipers? or it's there a company that sell the stencil for it to be painted on?
Thanks for watching! This video you commented on the calipers were already painted but I went through the whole process in another video.
I had decals made and they are applied over the dried paint. Most people go with decals. They hold up pretty well. I highly recommend getting your calipers powder coated. Look up Powder Garage on FB. He does a lot of Cadillac.
Looking to upgrade to powerstop Z23 brake kit for my 2017 Cadillac CT6 3.0 TT, but I don’t know which kit to order, with or without weight dampers? Can you shed some light on this?
Also do you know a source where I can get the same OEM Calipers for my car in red?

Not available - paint or powder coat will be necessary for your calipers.
Do you know if the ats performance parts are interchangeable with the 2015 cts? Everywhere I look it seem like I can only find ats parts but I believe the run on the same 2.0t platform
Many parts are but some parts get changed to fit the different car. Sometimes that’s something that you have to find out with trial and error. But the internet is big and has lots of resources!
Thanks! Unfortunately i failed, couldn’t replace rotor because bolt stripped from the dealer and couldn’t figure how to depress the pistons to get the new thickness pads to fit. At least put back together and seems to work. 2014 model so had full opening
failed again in second attempt. Those caliper bolts seem impossible to remove. Have electric impact wrench, breaker bar, tried hammering. Seems nearly impossible to apply enough torque to loosen. Ridiculous really
Wow. Wonder if someone put wrong loctite on them. Also are you ABSOLUTELY sure you were turning them the right way. Sorry to ask but that was me 20 years ago. No joke
@@loopbayou can use a drill and a bit and drill out that screw. Trust me it works great on removing those stubborn screws. Just be careful on going in to deep, just keep an eye every second or so. It doesn’t take long to remove those screws there tiny. Also you can use a mini torch preferably the yellow one tank. Heating that screw up always works too. 😊
I have a 2014 CTS awd sedan. I have the J55 brakes. The front rotors are not the 13.6 rotors like I thought they were. Are the J56 calipers the 13.6 rotors? and Will they bolt right up in place of the J55 calipers?

Hey thanks for watching! They do squeak a lot when I come to a stop and they definitely dust enough to darken my wheels.
Check out my latest track video. Yes they held up great even at 100 degrees, fade was minimal. But after that hot track day no they squeak A LOT. I’m looking forward to going back to a quiet and clean steer pad when my more trackable car arrives next month! To be revealed!
This is Duneless from the forum. How is the z26 warrior from powerstop? And how do I know if I have weights or not? I'm doing front and rear kit. The kids say weighted or non weighted.
Hey Duneless! Answered they weighted question on other comment. I hear the only difference between Z23 and Z26 pads is the metal backing on the Z26 for heat resistance or something.

Replaced front brakes ats model. Pushed both sets of pistons in and I didn't remove the brake cap on the reservoir. Will that cause the brakes to not engage and disengage once the brakes are completely on? Brake is already hard as if brakes are already engaged. Could be the calipers correct?
Did you start the car yet? That pressure should relieve.
@@JetFuelOnly it didn't do that which was weird so I had the customer order calipers because I went back in to do the job over just to be on the safe side and it was the same things going on with the calipers. I will go back and try it with the cap off which shouldn't stop the calipers from working.
Do you know of any stainless steel brake lines that fit the CTS Vsport?
You can get CTS-V ones from Renick Performance. They are one of few that aren’t universal - they are made to fit.
What are weight dampers and do I need them for the front pads?
You will see them as little ears sticking out of the caliper on the pads. Only 2014 had them. the safest bet is get no weights. They aren’t important
Would it be possible to install those calipers on the rear?
No. For this car the upgrade path for the rear would be ATS-V calipers and rotors or CTS-V calipers and rotors.
What kind of break fluid do you use in your cts v
Because I track the car Motul RBF600. But if you don’t take your car on a road course any DOT4 fluid works. Check out my other video on bleeding brakes.
Do you need to replace rotors when changing brake pads
Not always. Technically the rotors need to be measured for thickness. You can tell if they are we wearing because there will be a lip around the edge. Stock rotors are so cheap I think you should swap them out honestly.
Guy I work with who ran on a race team said that stop power is made by Bremeo so just get them instead

The v sport is 6 pot where as the ats and Camaro are 4 pot calipers. I think.
No the VSPORT is 4 but the CTS-V and ATS-V is 6

Probably is. If the caliper looks similar it is. If it's the two piece design like I show in the other brake change video then use that tutorial

Weights were to kill some low speed noise but from what I’m getting is GM dropped that issue. Others have put non weighted pads in and no problems.
How do you know if they are weighted? I need to order from powerstop but it asks me if I have weighted or not weighted.
Most 2014 has weights. Maybe a few 2015. Look at the opening on the caliper, you will see weights sticking out if you have them. The newer calipers don’t have as wide of openings to accommodate weights. You can generally go no-weights no matter what and be fine.

I would not hammer a ratchet, especially one from a company that no longer has a lifetime warranty (Craftsman) you can just use a box end wrench and beat on it instead, better yet get some slugging wrenches or get the car up high enough to use a proper breaker bar.

Square opening is good for weighted or non weighted pads!

You’re right, sorry based on the fact I pulled these calipers off to paint meant that step was covered in the other video.

Put new rotors on my 3.6. They make the most annoying noise while driving.. ch ch ch ch ch ch until you hit the brakes.
Make sure the pads are properly positioned and the retainer is in correctly. Otherwise, pads may just need to be worn in a bit.
@JetFuelOnly how long does it take to wear the pads in? Everything is in correctly. The combo works great, way more bite, smooth braking. Just make that annoying ass sound all the time..
@lucasjohnson1467 not sure… that is if that is the problem. Also, go back and are sure you didn’t bend the dust shield. It may be just touching the rotors.
@JetFuelOnly it's not that. The rotors have comma shaped grooves, and I think it's when the pads pass over, you can hear it..
