First time I heard AL was on this broadcast As a trumpet player in a small combo I became an instant fan and began collecting his records.Three years later my daughter Debbie was born.She grew up to the sound of his music.Twenty years later while on vacation in New Orleans she met and later married the bass player in the band.An accomplished pianist Al Hirt hired her also and she joined the band.She now plays the calliope on the river boat '' Natches'' Hirt was the greatest trumpted player in my large collection of records and the nicest man I ever met.He told me Harry James was his idol and Rafeal Mandez the best teacher and player. thanks for sharing.

Pee Wee Spitelera was Pete Fountain's student & protégé. Pee Wee played in the Lawrence Welk "Junior Band" for almost 2 years in 1957 thru 1959. He was on the air every week playing Baritone Sax and Clarinet. He played the same model mouthpiece as Pete Fountain and sounded almost exactly like Pete. By the way, towards the end of Battle Hymn on this video - Al plays part of the song Fiddle Faddle written by Leroy Anderson and often played by the Boston Pops. And the trombone player is NOT Bob Havens - in later years Al had a great player named Ricky Nelson - but I don't know who this is on the video.

Truly one of the greatest trumpet virtuoso's to ever play the trumpet. I have been listening to him for 50+ years and never tire of hearing him.

Wow! the 1961 RCA album Al (He's the King) Hirt and his band has a superb version of I Love Paris, plus lots of great Dixieland!
