A friend of mine showed me this combo when the drone was released. Mirran Spy is another untap enabler. I like the golem with welding jar. Alter of the brood is good too. I was using Ornathopter and impact tremors, but I like this build better. Thanks for sharing. Might have to throw this together again.
I like Pact of Negation in this deck for the non budget version. Its basically force of will, because if you ever had to pay for it, something has gone horribly awry. Its the combo deck Bff but nobody ever talks about it. It plays better than dispel because it lets you go off a turn earlier and that could mean the difference between life and death. Plus it also neutralizes snapcaster mage, when snap bolt can really mess things up.
Ive been using a pure blue version of this deck. You can use things like Elusive Spellfist to one punch them into oblivion and Golem Factory where you would just create infinite 3/3 golems. Unless they have mass removal, which you can counter, they are dead. Mono blue means consistency due to no fixing needed and faster searching via things like anticipate or other 1 mana top deck searches, or include bounce to delay your opponent until the combo comes online. I will also note that my standard version of this deck was hilarious and fun when the Spellfist was legal.
Probably worth running Mirran Spy over Battered Golem. The toughness is useful, and not being an artifact itself is very relevant in the face of Kolaghan's Command.
This was my pauper deck... It can also work with Zephyr Scribe + Elusive Spellfist, a little harder to achieve but still functionable with preordain and ponder.
I have the serum visions already. I put everything in the cart and its about twenty dollars. THESE ARE PAUPER PRICES! ITS INSANE. Can't wait to play this.
I've been playing a version of this deck for awhile now except I run 4 eldrazi temple which in some instances allow for a turn 3 kill turn 1: temple and altar, turn 2 red source and nettle drone, turn 3 blue source knack and jar and go to town. my deck varies with finishers as well. you can storm off with grapeshot.
I won a game at bfz pre-release with about 15 Nettle Drone pings. It was so awesome. I have to play this deck because it reminds me of that day. Also I have nearly all cards needed. Fnm here I come :D
I like this, was thinking about entering modern for a while and as an Izzet player this intrigues me. But still, it seems really fragile. Come to think about it, I'd love some live playtesting with the final versions of deck techs, probably in a seperate video, to get a better impression of the deck.
Faithless Looting could be sweet as a budget alternative to Serum Visions as you can discard pieces you don't need like extra welding jars and draw two new cards, plus you can flash it back.
i made something like this when bfz hit standard. but i was using that eldrazi that reduced colorless costs along with clever impersonator to get my 4 cost golem that bounces a creaure when he enters play (from khans block) to go infinite. your combo is much easier. but I didn't have access to helix in standart at the time
Ancient Stirrings seems like a good potential addition: it hits the Altar, devoid eldrazi, 0 mana artefacts, etc. everything except the 1 mana blue instants. Seems fine. Edit: Yes, it's green, but it's an amazing piece of tech for 1 green mana.
the pauper version will be Grixis instead of UR, just change these: Molten Nursery for Reckless Fireweaver Altar of the Brood for Disciple of the Vault Tormod's Crypt for any 0 cmc artifact Shivan Reef for Evolving Wilds Fix the mana(cause now there's 3 colors), and that's all.
I built this deck but i use ornithopters, apostles blessing (to get removal out of the way), and temple of epiphany. If yiu decide you put trample in there yiur kozilek can deal infinite damage as well. Reckless fireweaver can make this a turn 3 as well
I love your deck techs. How ever my friends like to play 4-6 player free for all. Could you do a deck tech on how to up grade your decks from 1v1 one to a free for all?
Poor Sleight of Hand :P I actually started building this when someone on Wizards put a list up. Maybe I'll finish it off and use your build. Helps Serum Visions have dropped. Though maybe I'll use my copy of Sleight of Hand to replace one.
I have a version of this deck and it was great casual fun. Modern decks wreck it because your combo pieces have to sit on the board for a turn. Though, there's a little less interaction now than when I played it, so who knows?
I always wondered why there wasn't more love for Tormod's Crypt. I got the card from the Khan's Raging Hordes or whatever deck and saw a 0 drop that absolutely destroys zombie/recursion/dredge decks in their tracks and it's only $0.20 and it's an uncommon. I guess maybe there's better options and that's the only reason I could grasp it's price being so low.
Did you ever consider Reckless Fireweaver as a damage dealer? It can come down after drone to leave you two mana up for counterspells, or can be an early blocker. I don't think it should necessarily replace Molten Nursery, but maybe as a two of in the main
I'm wondering if this could be turned into a Pauper deck. Only Molten Nursery and Altar of the Brood might need thought and some searching to find replacements for. Looks like a great deck though.
I have a suggestion, a all colorless artifact construct deck. I've been thinking about it since I got a Karn, Scion of Urza, but I have no idea how to do that.
Going to tiptoe into Modern...and I'm thinking of putting this deck together. Thankfully,, I already have a couple of Serum Visions from the Conspiracy reprint, as well as the Crypts and Shivan Reefs, and most of the BfZ Commons. Very cool, the overall cost to me is going to be about $13, lol. If I can win even a single game with it, I'll consider it a success, considering the price tag on some of those decks... As a Standard player, I also have some Spirebluff Canals. I think I'm going to slot those over the Swiftwater Cliffs. Question: Where is the Sideboard? I have no idea how to SB for Modern.
Yup. Thats T1 DS Cit, Opal, Thopter, Impact Tremors. T2 Land, 3 drop. T3 Helix FTW. Simian Spirit Guide can push it to T2 but it turns the deck into a glass cannon because it takes out Dispel.
I can't help but think the lack of haste means your creatures just die every time... Maybe Lightning Greaves? And if you have the money to afford a tricolor manabase, you can run the best modern legal cantrip in existence - Ancient Stirrings - to find every combo piece except the bounce instant.
Sure it would increase the cost of the deck by like $10, but what about Temples of Epiphany instead of the life lands? Scry sounds mostly better than gaining a bit of life unless aggro is big in your meta (it probably is). Then there's the possibility of Grapeshot instead of Molten Nursery saving you one mana on the winning turn for protection. Going infinite either way, but Grapeshot is safe from enchantment removal.
Might be cheaper but also less Modern viable due to the amount of removal you can find in that format. Also, a very edge case but you cast a colorless spell with molten nursery and even if it's countered it still deals damage. Another edge case would be that creature being enchanted with spirit link.
I just noticed banishing knack and retraction helix the other day and I was confused. I didn't know magic reprinted identical cards with different names. Are there any other occasions of this?
Quite a few, actually. Searing Spear to Lightning Strike, Arenson's Aura to Teferi's Care, Blue Elemental Blast to Hydroblast, Evolving Wilds to Terramophic Expanse and (in most cases) Cultivate to Kodama's Reach are just some examples of "functional reprints".
so you can activate the drones own ability plus the new helix ability with one single tap? I thought that in this case you would have to choose which ability you want to activate :o
Wouldn't another good combo piece, while adding another color of mana, be Jeskai Ascendancy? That's how the old standard version of this deck used to run, so would it still work here?
So I'm very sad that a deck I brewed from scratch is now a net flavor but hey, at least I get some verifaction that its not junk. I do have a couple notes for you. You missed Mirran Spy as Nettle Drone backup, it's straight better than the golem. Ornithopter and Memnite can sub for the Jar and Crypt to provide early blocks. With 0 cost critters instead of artifacts you can use Impact Tremors instead of...dookie I forgot the 3 drop's name. Lastly, I haven't found the perfect answer but fyi Infect (GU) kills this deck consistantly.
If I recall correctly this was on an article on wizards official site awhile back. Lotta fun, glad you could bring it to more people.
ALTAR MILLS ONE CARD, NOT TWO! STILL WRECKS EVERYONE! SHUT UP! I’M ACTUALLY THE WORST!
TheManaSource You can only repay us for this serious mistake by making another WORST CARDS EVER PRINTED IN THE HISTORY OF MAGIC EVER (ever)
Only thing that makes up for this is worst cards ever.
TheManaSource That's okay Wedge, least it's not as bad as when The Professor gets the dates wrong xD
Or the 5 million mistakes in all his Pokemon videos. Bless him for having a sense of humor about it in that Commander video, though.
DAMMIT!
I built this once, and it was a really fun deck.
At least, when it worked.
A friend of mine showed me this combo when the drone was released. Mirran Spy is another untap enabler. I like the golem with welding jar. Alter of the brood is good too. I was using Ornathopter and impact tremors, but I like this build better. Thanks for sharing. Might have to throw this together again.
My buddy has a version of this with retract and tons of 0 drop artifacts, kinda like the monk/puresteel deck. Great video Wedge.
I am LOVING all these videos focused on Blue/Red decks. It makes me happy to be an Izzet player.
I will also note that my standard version of this deck was hilarious and fun when the Spellfist was legal.
i got clint cearley to modify one of my nettle drones to have a top hat, monocle, and suit. it looks SWEET.
Probably worth running Mirran Spy over Battered Golem. The toughness is useful, and not being an artifact itself is very relevant in the face of Kolaghan's Command.
You could also play grapeshot......
Super budget storm haha
Cameron Herrera That sounds fantastic
Cameron Herrera what would you substitute for grape shots addition? Four Banishing Knack, give you the option of playing either?
Laird Amadeus Kael W. Pyralis Altar or the enchantment, because it does what those do.
I have a red white and blue version using grapeshot
Wedge, this deck looks awesome. I was such a fan of RB Eldrazi Ping, so seeing this reminds me of my past love. Cheers!
Zephyr Scribe (Dragons of Tarkir) works as Nettle Drone copy as well, it untaps when you play a noncreature spell, which Tormod's Crypt qualifies as
This was my pauper deck... It can also work with Zephyr Scribe + Elusive Spellfist, a little harder to achieve but still functionable with preordain and ponder.
You should call this deck "Heavy Nettle"
So good!
Stinging Nettle
Caleb Schultz *slow clap*
OH MY GOD THIS IS BEAUTIFUL
The Mana Curve Fun fact: this is very bad against Faeries.
Love it! Love out of left-field weird modern decks that don,t break the bank.
I have a brew that might interest you
And this had to pop up in my feed two days before a modern magic origins box tournament.
I have the serum visions already. I put everything in the cart and its about twenty dollars. THESE ARE PAUPER PRICES! ITS INSANE. Can't wait to play this.
This is much cheaper than the $100 equipment deck that I was planning on building (from one of your videos I believe). I like it.
Gives me flashbacks to the Jeskai combo in Standard. Astral Cornocopia was a good pick for that deck.
I won a game at bfz pre-release with about 15 Nettle Drone pings. It was so awesome.
I have to play this deck because it reminds me of that day. Also I have nearly all cards needed. Fnm here I come :D
I can't wait to test this out!
MtgGoldfish! This sounds like a great "against the odds"...
Reckless Fireweaver can be used in place of or in conjunction with Molten Nursery :)
I chose to use Grapeshot instead because it's harder to counter.
Cool deck idea I might try out in modern, since the current meta is lacking a fun deck that interests me. Thanks for posting it. :)
I like this, was thinking about entering modern for a while and as an Izzet player this intrigues me. But still, it seems really fragile. Come to think about it, I'd love some live playtesting with the final versions of deck techs, probably in a seperate video, to get a better impression of the deck.
You forgot to mention Sulfur Falls when you talked about the land upgrades. It enters untaped so easily in this deck, it's crazy.
With the release of Dominaria, Diligent Excavator could possibly be an additional combo piece.
Faithless Looting could be sweet as a budget alternative to Serum Visions as you can discard pieces you don't need like extra welding jars and draw two new cards, plus you can flash it back.
i made something like this when bfz hit standard. but i was using that eldrazi that reduced colorless costs along with clever impersonator to get my 4 cost golem that bounces a creaure when he enters play (from khans block) to go infinite. your combo is much easier. but I didn't have access to helix in standart at the time
Since when can I buy into Modern this cheaply? This deck is dirty and I love it!
Planeswalker Project
You always could you just can't expect your deck to go far.
I have a red white and blue version using grapeshot
Ancient Stirrings seems like a good potential addition: it hits the Altar, devoid eldrazi, 0 mana artefacts, etc. everything except the 1 mana blue instants. Seems fine.
Edit: Yes, it's green, but it's an amazing piece of tech for 1 green mana.
Spirebluff Canal sounds like a good addition that doesnt cost a whole lot right now.
Looks fun, trying to find some gameplay of this kind of deck to see it in action.
With a bit of tweeking, this could be Pauper legal!
What tweaks would need to be made? Ya know, for a friend.
It already exists, guys. I am building it XD
the pauper version will be Grixis instead of UR, just change these:
Molten Nursery for Reckless Fireweaver
Altar of the Brood for Disciple of the Vault
Tormod's Crypt for any 0 cmc artifact
Shivan Reef for Evolving Wilds
Fix the mana(cause now there's 3 colors), and that's all.
Thanks much
Finally a non creature combo for pauper
I built this deck but i use ornithopters, apostles blessing (to get removal out of the way), and temple of epiphany. If yiu decide you put trample in there yiur kozilek can deal infinite damage as well. Reckless fireweaver can make this a turn 3 as well
spring leaf drum and maybe foundry inspector might be a good fit too.
altar is in almost every single edh deck i own because of how much it just works with anything that plays a decent numbet of permanents
For another upgrade, you could replace dispel with pact of negation to save a mana

I played a deck like this in standard back then with jeskai ascendency =)
You can use efficient construction for infinit Thopters
wow, you have made a modern deck out of my pauper deck... that wins a turn later
I'm thinking I try a version of this in pauper...
This deck is hilarious. I think I'll bring this jank to modern fnm this week.
Since the deck is fast, spirebluff canal and shivan reef are really great as budget lands.
Mirran Spy in the place of the Battered Golem, and also, Trinket Mages also helps a lot to tutor up the artifacts.
Oh I am so going to MTGO this man
I'm wondering if this could be turned into a Pauper deck. Only Molten Nursery and Altar of the Brood might need thought and some searching to find replacements for. Looks like a great deck though.
Hey wedge you should make a deck tech over a modern infect deck. It would be really cool.
I don't care about budget or not.
i have this deck, but split molten nursery in half for reckless fireweaver, and run mirran spy instead of battered golem.
Postmortem Lunge would probably be a good sideboard card against removal heavy decks!
Looks hilarious, I love it 😁 it looks like a perfect starter combo deck for the format. I'll stick to living end, but goddam is that purty.
I have a suggestion, a all colorless artifact construct deck. I've been thinking about it since I got a Karn, Scion of Urza, but I have no idea how to do that.
For the mana base, maybe it's also good temple of epiphany
I use it
love this deck great job
Going to tiptoe into Modern...and I'm thinking of putting this deck together. Question: Where is the Sideboard? I have no idea how to SB for Modern.
adding in Darksteel Citadel and a couple mox opals in place of a couple welding jars couldn't hurt.
coolnobodycares Citadel won't work because it's a land.
Bobbynibbles. Citadel won't bounce but it will enable Opal. With the nuts you can go off turn 3 with Opal. T2 if you shoehorn in Simian Spirit Guides.
Ralph Tiff
turn 1 if you get citadel MOX and a 0/1 mana artifact.
Yup. Thats T1 DS Cit, Opal, Thopter, Impact Tremors. T2 Land, 3 drop. T3 Helix FTW. Simian Spirit Guide can push it to T2 but it turns the deck into a glass cannon because it takes out Dispel.
screw the budget right!? RIGHT!?
i love this channel so much
+TheManaSource why do you use welding jar over other 0 mamba artifacts?
I can't help but think the lack of haste means your creatures just die every time...
Maybe Lightning Greaves? And if you have the money to afford a tricolor manabase, you can run the best modern legal cantrip in existence - Ancient Stirrings - to find every combo piece except the bounce instant.
Also fun in pauper, but less consistant.
How about another Worst Cards?
nah ;)
Agreed. There must be more out there and we need to know what they are!
yeah with thousands of cards out there, there must be even more terrible cards.
Dude same.
you can do this w/ spider silk net, too
Heyyy, I've got some of these. Might be able to pic this up for half the price.
Awesome deck!
I have a similar pauper deck. :3
"Where do people find these card?" Hehehe. Good shit.
I think engineered explosives would be a good 0 mana spell, since it can be used wipe opponents creatures etc
Seen this combo from another UA-cam but I took it and made a pauper deck with this
I've seen this combo running in Pauper more or less effective.
Not a huge fan, but comboing off with common/uncommon seems sweet in Modern.
Would you recomend playing Aetherflux Reservoir in the sideboard against Burn??
What about everflowing chalice instead of welding jar, at least can generate some colorles mana
Other cards basically just like the golem/drone: Midnight Guard, Captain of the Mists, and Sunstrike Legionaire
Wedge! You should stream play of these decks!
hey, just came across this video and was wondering if their are any cool updates from more recent sets you can add to this deck
reckless fireweaver could be good with this combo to i think, for more consitancy with ur bouceing and dmg
I might turn this into a pauper deck
You can play this in pauper... made this deck about 3 months ago
Could you do budget madness instanat/sorcery?
Also, I would think ornithopter works would work better than welding jar
What about that new 2 mana 0/3 that does damage every time an artifact hits the battlefield?
Might be cheaper but also less Modern viable due to the amount of removal you can find in that format. Also, a very edge case but you cast a colorless spell with molten nursery and even if it's countered it still deals damage. Another edge case would be that creature being enchanted with spirit link.

Couldn't you pull of the combo a turn faster with reckless fireweaver ? Turn 2 weaver, turn 3 helix and combo off
Joe Faley you need something to untap when the artifact hits the bosrd
I have a red white and blue version and it goes off at turn 3 but possible turn 2
I have most of these cards already. Well, deck building I go.
so you can activate the drones own ability plus the new helix ability with one single tap? I thought that in this case you would have to choose which ability you want to activate :o
would this work with ornithopers aswell? so you have a sort of defence line
Wouldn't another good combo piece, while adding another color of mana, be Jeskai Ascendancy? That's how the old standard version of this deck used to run, so would it still work here?
this an awesome Deck!
Ib4 "This deck needs Simian Spirit Guide"?
Yuchen Zhou Kinda, but protection works better. I started with pure rush and lost consistantly to removal.
ITS BEAUTIFUL WEDGE
now can we have another worst cards ever?
So I'm very sad that a deck I brewed from scratch is now a net flavor but hey, at least I get some verifaction that its not junk. I do have a couple notes for you.
