    Pro Tip - instead of spray paint, use PlastiDip. You can spray on a ton of coats in like an hour with very little dry time. Holds up great.

    Another one of the biggest advantages to the variable speed "max" trolling motor is at lower speeds it pulses the motor to get the lesser speed where the standard 5 speed motor uses resistors to slow down the motor.
    The pulsing motor at less than full speed draws less battery juice hence giving you a longer run time with your battery while the 5 speed motor is still drawing the same power at even its lower speeds and the extra energy not needed is just basically thrown away as heat by the resistors.
    Lead acid batteries for longevity should not be drawn down below about 50% of their rated capacity before you start causing damage to the battery which will show as lessened capacity going forward.
    Lipo 4 batteries can be discharged down to 100% of its capacity without shortening its run times.
    But as you drain the Lipo 4 down that far you do shorten the amount of charging cycles before it craps out but again even doing so every day the battery will last long past its warranty period which for many can be as long as 10 years.
    Most it seems to recommend on a regular basis to not draw down a lipo4 but about 80% for great performance and cell/battery longevity.
    Also remember you cannot charge a Lipo battery below 32 degrees F.
    So to use the batteries without causing damage a 100 amp hour Lipo battery will replace the capacity of 2 100 amp hour wet cell lead acid batteries, well worth the additional cost.
    These days there are decently performing brands of Lipo 4 100AH batteries that can be bought in the mid $200 ranges.

      That's incredible info, thank you! Yah I drew my lead acid one down to 0% A LOT, I think that's why I started noticing myself dying earlier and earlier each trip. I'm still running the battery in this video and going strong!

    With your new trolling motor what speed do you use! I’m thinking about going lithium too but don’t want to go 100+ cause of cost. I have a 50 lb thrust motor but don’t think I’ll be using full speed unless I have too.

    • @humbugvideos
      @humbugvideos  10 місяців тому +2

      Full speed is around 3-4 mph depending on the amount of gear packed for the day. Typically while trolling I run from 1.1-1.8 and can go all day no issues. Just get an 80 or 100 AH and you’ll never look back!

    I have your set up, only with an older 45 lb Minn Kota Traxxis. I have limited knowledge on electrical systems, but thought a 40 amp breaker would be more than I would need. I am just about ready to install it. What make you decide on a 50? Should I return mine to Amazon and buy the 50? Thanks...

    • @humbugvideos
      @humbugvideos  11 місяців тому +1

      A friend of mine told me to run the 50, and he's pretty knowledgeable with electrical boat parts so I took his word for it. As of now that's the only reason why I picked it lol

    • @NevadaScrubJay
      @NevadaScrubJay 11 місяців тому

      Thanks for that prompt reply. Again, I enjoy you videos and enthusiasm. I found an interesting Minn Kota table which I will paste at the end. I have a 45 lbs Traxxis (more efficient mtr) and have been concerned about the apparent light gauge of the Sun Dolphin 8' transom to bow wiring. I found that the manufacturer says it is 10 gauge and that is sufficient for as much as a 45 lb motor at a distance up to 10 feet. Everywhere else that I look indicate an minimum of 8 gauge at 10 feet and 6 gauge over longer distances. But, this would be for full-out/draw over time. Note the thickness of the wires coming off your motor vs the boat wires.
      You and I troll mostly at 1 to 2 mph with far less than a full draw for most of the day. Going back to the barn might be full draw at 3 to 3.5 mph for maybe a half hour. So, it looks to be close, but OK. This is just an FYI. minnkota.johnsonoutdoors.com/us/support/trolling-motor-installation-guides/trolling-motor-wiring-and-battery-guide
      Your videos would be even more interesting if you always mentioned the lake you were on and info on best launch and retrieval spots on that body of water. Bruce
