Great video! Having worked in the municipal water treatment industry, I understand how incredibly important and necessary water it is to our society. It's not a renewable resource and the steps our communities must take, every day, to maintain our clean water is also critical. With increased frequency, we hear of municipalities reporting on unsafe drinking water and boiled water warnings. I use the Berkey in my home.
My preferred filter for a group is Survivor Filter Pro X Electric Water Filter for a short term emergency water filter. Excellent for me alone, but very useful in preparing water for a group. Two containers and a power source are only other need. Survivor Filter Pro is the manual pump, which uses same filter elements as the Pro X filter. The Survivor Filter Pro X can be a good long term option with proper replacement elements.
I know you touched base with the life straw personal straw I was kind of surprised you didn't touch base on the life straw mission which is such a power house and in my opinion semi affordable. Excellent video! Thanks for putting it out. I spent a good bit of time over the last three years looking at this issue. And could have saved most of that time by just watching your video. In addition, you identify several filter resources that I had not encountered. A couple of additional thoughts. 1. The Berkey filters and their close competitors are certainly very popular and very convenient. However, at the time when I was researching them, some reviewers had expressed concerns that no independent certifying agencies had run a complete certification battery of tests. 2. I have not experienced it, but there are folks who have had sawyer mini's clog up. In general, I really appreciate your thoughtful, systematic, and comprehensive approach to preparation. Thank you!
If you have to pre clean water that would quickly clog a filter, alum (Potassium Aluminum Sulfate) makes a good flocculant. ~ 1 1/2 tsp to 3 gal of moderately turbid water should coagulate and settle out the particulates much quicker than gravity alone. And I would not be surprised if you have some in your kitchen.
Thank you for all the research you put into this video! One brand not mentioned which seems very reputable is LifeStraw. Just wondering if your family has added it to your arsenal & your thoughts if any? 😊 Thanks again.

Yes...lye is a salt and as such not removed by the filter. Distillation will remove salts. Only problem is that it is a fairly energy intensive process. Hey Hiddn Puzl...as Kylene said, if you put clean water in a clean vessel, there isn't much to go wrong. The trick is going to be getting the cola bottles sanitized, particularly the lid...that seems to be the place that is hardest to clean. It is best if you can then store them in a cool, dark location. They fit fairly nicely inside an apple box from the grocery store. That also helps keep the light out. I do feel strongly that water coming out of storage should be put through a good filter/purifier. This "freshens" water that might sometimes become stale. It also helps to address any taste or odor issues, and gives me extra confidence that the water is safe. If you don't already have one, a good filter/purifier should be high on your list of acquisitions. This allows you to purify more water when your stored water is gone. Sounds like you are doing great things...keep it up! And Thanks for Being Part of the Solution!!
I realize that this video is 2 years old, but are you aware of the lawsuits against Berkey? Apparently their filters only remove a small fraction of the contaminates. Maybe a new video on Berkey would be good.

Hey Ryan...I just looked at the specifications and it does indicate that it is certified under NSF 53. I have a call into Berkey to clarify and ensure that this is the case. I will let you know as soon as I hear back from them. Great question...answer coming. Thanks for being part of the solution!
Hey Ryan...turns out that Berkey filters are not NSF 53 certified. As she explained to me, they surpass all the standards for NSF 53, but have chosen not to certify under that standard, partly because it is unnecessary, partly because they have independent test data that clearly exceeds all NSF standards, and I would guess partly because because that world is highly contentious and political (my sense from discussion I had with Katie). Here is Katie's reply to me: Hello, Great question!! NSF certifications are not required but rather optional. In our opinion, NSF certifications are limited in their application with respect to our gravity fed purification elements. NSF Standard 42 (aesthetic effects) and Standard 53 (health effects) would specifically apply to our purification elements. NSF Standard 42 covers systems “designed to reduce specific aesthetic or non-health-related contaminants (such as chlorine, taste and odor, and particulates) that may be present in public or private drinking water.” This would appear to be an unnecessary certification as not only do the elements easily handle public drinking water, but also untreated raw water, exceeding what the standard would certify for. NSF Standard 53 addresses “systems designed to reduce specific health-related contaminants, such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, lead, VOC’s, MTBE that may be present in public or private drinking water.” The organisms mentioned are rather large in size. Our purification elements have been tested to remove not only a whole host of VOC’s but more importantly viruses, much smaller organisms. Again, this exceeds what the standard would certify for. The tests we have conducted are much more rigorous than those required by NSF for the certifications required. Our purifiers have been rigorously tested by third-party independent accredited labs far surpassing the above standards 42 and 53. For example, our systems have been tested for the removal of hundreds of contaminants including heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, pathogenic bacteria and viruses. These test results are published and available to all our consumers on our website as well as published in our printed literature. In addition, there has also been other highly publicized and notable testing of our purifiers against other so-called similar water filtration systems which clearly back up our third-party testing. Below is our page with the testing. The links for these specific tests will be at the top of the page. We have used a couple of different 3rd party testers! www.berkeyfilters.com/pages/filtration-specifications I am glad to have the opportunity to assist you and I hope this information is helpful. Berkey does it's own testing rather than be independently tested and certified. It claims independent testing is not cost effective--a weak argument for a wildly popular and expensive filter system. Would you buy a car that does its own safety tests? Probably not.
I think it can't be sold in California. I have a propur. I broke a filter and the ceramic filer was filled with activated charcoal. I was very impressed. I hear Becky filers have gone down in quality
I'll make my own diy water filter rather than go with one of the overpriced commercial ones. Besides, all the popular filters are just that--filters and not water purifiers because any virus will pass through all of them. Fortunately here in the U.S., we don't have a lot of viruses in our water. So if push comes to shove the river down the block might be ok.
Dang heck yeah. Preepers get their stockpile and the producer gets rich to enjoy this life. Lol. Bout like Christmas. Just a big commercial stalking. Most preppers sound just like this commercial. So as an outsider. I can observe that your commercials have worked. Wow. You ever considered marketing? Fear is an amazing thing to have for bait. Really hope this kinda stuff helps. But I see a stockpile being a target. If shit hits the fan. I will not be hunkering down in my house. It’s go time. I dare you to carry all that. Lol
Hi, I don’t know if you’ll see this as it is two years later, but in all seriousness, I see both the security AND the risks of remaining at home. BUT if one considers it “go time” where exactly do you go where you would have access to what you need for survival, and you’d still need to take a lot with you, wouldn’t you?? We live in a crazy world that keeps getting more unsafe and many of us do feel like “something” is going to happen soon. So extra food and water on hand, ways to filter water, ways to prepare simple foods etc, having some power back up. Yes, these concerns make us all spend extra money to be at least somewhat prepared, but I think that’s better than people who are living oblivious to the fact that something could happen and don’t keep any extra food, water or supplies. I think that is way worse. But in all honesty, where would someone bug out to? 😱
