the most effective part of the drive is when the oar is perpendicular to the boat. The 2k video looks like you are hitting the catch and just riding the stroke out to the finish and not accelerating through the middle of the stroke. The latest video on the paddle looks more linear and your blade prep has improved. Here is a tip "don't start what you can't finish" meaning if you hammer the catch you are not be able to sustain that pressure to the finish, the dynamics of the arc are that your blade is least effective at the catch so it makes no sense to over-power the water and rip a big hole. You are right, the stroke starts at the finish, the tap down, the handle moving forward, the body pivot, rolling up the slide and squaring, seat blade timing and the entry. You look pretty relaxed on the paddle segment and a tip to prepare the blade sooner is feel and listen for the the blade "clunk" square in the gate and try to row with even less tension on your inside arm, let your outside arm control the blade on the recovery. Reach the catch with relaxed shoulders, catch sharply with speed, watch the stern/speed coach, and load the stroke to the middle of the drive holding and squeezing to the finish with outside arm pressure.
Glad to provide feedback and thank you for blogging your daily journey to becoming a champion. Cheers!

Thanks a lot Kenneth! Spot on. Its always a battle to find the difference between looking for load to make it feel like I'm working and getting the load right with the right grip!

Hi Cameron, I think it’s great that you can analyse your stroke and be able to know what to change. It really shows your dedication and knowledge which is very admirable. In my coastal rowing, we are changing up our race strategy by doing longer, more powerful strokes which is what you touched on. I went out with the adult crews and was put into stroke (surprisingly) and we did drills to lengthen our stroke. It’s safe to say the crews were very impressed in how a junior can have technique and stamina matched to the adults. I felt very proud!

It looks elegant and effortless from here Cam :) Do the coaches measure, see and log the length and power of your stroke on the water, as we do on the C2 with the ERG app? What tech do the coaches have on each athlete in the boat, during, or after an on water row/session? Was thinking how much waterproof tech is in the boat and on you, for you and for your coaches, for optimising performance whilst on water? I'm asking as a cyclist who uses all the sensors to measure everything when I ride

    • @CameronBuchan
      @CameronBuchan  4 роки тому +1

We have telemetry that goes on our boats that gives us lengths etc at an individual level! We don't use it all the time, more towards racing season!

The change that I most noticed: the depth of the blade just after catch. The oar shaft isn’t as deep as before, l would imagine that this wouldn’t push the boat over (possible stroke, bow conflict to set the boat) and more of the energy you put into the stroke is directed to sending the boat forward. Pretty brave to offer up advice from the peanut gallery, and to self critique publicly, however, the gains in your rowing are clear.

I'm definitely seeing improvements too, alot of room for improvement though! I see it as a chance for me to assess honestly on what I'm doing, if I'm off with my feedback generally the comments will tell! Finding it a great way to hold myself accountable!

The catch on your low rate rowing looks well improved over your catch in the 8 in the past. The 2k piece looks too "yanked" the catch is being done with the upper body and as you lost your hips you have to yank it abruptly to accelerate that bit more at the finish. a bit more patience round the front to connect and apply only the legs will let you have the hips available for the middle and end part of the drive. My 2 cents on the matter

ye really enjoyed the video!!!! really helps working on my own technique, would be good (like u said) to see maybe some analysis done on others as well (maybe a bit more novice like) to have something more similar to relate to :-)

Topic for the Next Rowing techique: stopping at the end of the stroke. I think the CommonWealth countries like GB, SA do this a lot. I would like to know your opinion on this. Great video, keep improving💪💪

I found that I was rating too high for my current ability. My return was rushed therefore not settled for the catch, thus it has a knock on effect to the drive. I tried doing some priming pieces. Settling in at a rate I found comfortable and had the right technique and slowly increased the stroke rate in stages.

Great discussion of what you are trying to do in the pair. Looks like a consensus is forming in the comments, there's plenty going on at the catch but maybe not so much later on in the stroke.
I understand that you want to lengthen the power phase, seems like a good idea. You could just give yourself more outboard, but that might be counterproductive. I'm guessing that the reason things didn't feel 100% in the 2k piece and you weren't fully able to execute the plan could be that you are overloaded in that early part of the power phase.
If you don't have the adaptation at the moment, you could adjust the equipment. I think I might have mentioned before, probably don't shorten the oar as that might make things quite frantic. But as a tall athlete, you might have to accept that your longer limbs create an increase in gearing overall compared to a shorter person. You could give yourself a higher handle speed in the part of the power phase before the 90, reduce the amount of time you spend in that first part, and give yourself something to hang on to in the second half, by lengthening your inboard (by a lot eg. 4cm) and moving your wing enough towards the stern that your finish is comfortable with the longer inboard.
That could help you to achieve your longer power phase. Would take a few sessions to adapt, but might be interesting to see what happens to your catch when the load is reduced and whether that makes it easier to maintain acceleration later on in the stroke.
Unfortunately you might need to look at the motion of the boat in detail to see whether or not there is an improvement. Do you log acceleration on your gopro alongside the video track? I would be getting hold of that for the 2k piece you did, and starting with that as the baseline.

Amazing input as always! I'd love to adjust the rigging to see what we could change. Unfortunately, we barely ever touch the rigging to set it to an individual. I'll have a chat with the coaches about trying but I have never seen it done!

@@CameronBuchan Most likely you can see some improvement. The best coaches have an uncanny ability to look and make improvement recommendations. But video, plus instrumented oar data can let you see what happens and possible make changes.
With my first pair partner, I rowed starboard bow. As we progressed, I moved my rigger one notch to the bow, decreased the outboard by .5 cm, and used one less clam than my partner. I am in my 70's and a lightweight, my partner was a medalist for the US LM8+ at world cup years ago, and we eventually did a 800 meter piece at 1:42 and shorter pieces in the 1:3x region.

@@davidharralson8470 it's not so much the coaches won't know how to adjust, they definitely do. Just doing it individually is something that isn't really done! Maybe it's time!
