It's a clever idea that you need to wait for tiles until you can decide where the niche should be according to the size of the tiles. However keeping in tradition with the grand scale of the chateau, the niche shouldn't be just big enough to fit the bottles but also a lot of space above the bottles. Looks more intentional than just stuffed/boxed in. This also gives the opportunity to switch for another size bottles later if needed. Don't box yourself in (pun intended).
DESIGN TIP FOR THE NICHE! Put it on either of the side walls that way you don’t have the beautiful taps with shampoo bottles right next to it. Putting it on the side walls hides it a bit! fantastic job to all of you!!!😊
By the time Philipp blurred his own face I was in absolute hysterics. Loved Anna's eye shifting when he asked what the trade would be. She's so funny... they make a great team.
No doubt, this is the most humorus video to date!! I grinned and laughed out loud at the conversations (translated) between the three fellow workers! The swiss cheese panel was halarious, as well as "please blur my face" from Vincent. Well done, construction wise guys! Happy that Anna checked doctors regarding lead paint.

Philipp, out of all your well-documented skills, I admire your patience and humility most. Having to work side by side with contractors whose skills are not as good as your own must be a real challenge. However, you are able to do this, and still maintain such amazing humility. You are a true treasure.
I love how you get some beautiful and quiet cinematic shots from just a construction site. Also the music is always on point! I would love to watch a film directed by this man
Regarding the niche, designing the location according to the tiles is a simply elegant solution to the problem. Also, be sure to take into account how high some shampoo bottles can be and as to the width, how many products you are likely to use. Anna might want to take an inventory of the product you both regularly use in the shower and govern the width and height accordingly. Just a thought!
20 years ago, my husband and I renovated our newly purchased 100-hundred-year-old bungalow (not that old in comparison to your chateau but quite old for New Zealand). Anyway, I naively did a lot of sanding of the old paint without a much protective gear - perhaps a dust mask only. Upon completing our renovation, we moved in and expanded our family with our 2nd kiddo. Sadly, he was born with special needs which proceeded with many investigations to try and find out why and how - although it turns out he has a rare genetic syndrome, he did have high levels of lead in his blood, and although he was born after our renovation took place it has been thought that I likely had lead poisoning prior to getting pregnant. So yeah, long story short, caution when removing old paint is an absolute must! On a positive note, I really enjoyed this episode - thanks for the many laughs. xo
Good news on the lead test results! Also sometimes old glue, sheetrock and flooring can have asbestos, so good to get the old materials tested for that if you can.
I love seeing Philip, Benoit and now Vincent all working together. While the chateau is now almost completely renovated, I hope we still get to see them work together when it comes to renovating the outbuildings.
First, I am so glad you're okay Anna. Second, the blurring of the faces when Philip and Benoit made mistakes are so so funny and Vincent's also. It is purely entertaining.
I feel for you, Anna! In my not-so-old home (90 years) I always assume the worst and test for lead before disturbing paint. Also you want to use a knife to cut through the paint to expose all the layers that have been painted over time, so you can test all the layers. Good luck! It's such a pain removing lead paint - sealing off the area, covering yourself adequately, not being able to use any tools that will generate dust. But you're in winter, which should help - I've often found myself removing lead in the height of summer, which is no fun when wearing respirators and plastic suits!
Have you considered putting niche on side wall that divides shower and toilet so that the shampoo, soap, etc don't play such a prominent design feature?
I agree. I was just going to write that the niche should be placed so you don’t see it when looking straight into the shower at the back wall. It should be placed in a side wall so the bottles don’t detract from the tiling.
Exactly! Such a great point!!! Unless there is no space between the shower/toilet room walls... I think they're putting the niche where the old door once was... hence a space. @@Mimi-y9o4f
Make the niche tall enough for shampoo and conditioner bottles. It will also need to be wide enough to accommodate those two bottles. But, ideally, it needs to be wide enough to hold at least 4 bottles as men typically use different hair products than women and you will also need room for shower gel/ soap. Or you can make two niches and make them on each side of the water lines creating balance and proportion.
Yes, I agree! My husband was helping our 85 year old gentleman friend make bathroom renovation decisions. They ademently disagreed with me on the width size of the niche in the master bathroom.......they now agree I was right! They listened to me when they got to the guest bath.
Put the niche up high enough so that water from the showerhead doesnt sit in it (maybe SLIGHTLY slope the shelf?) otherwise you will get mould. Definitely make it as big as you can, looks more elegant. Even better if you can run it the wholde width of the shower....
Good medicine all round! Benoit, and Vincent, just perfect foils for Phillip, and Anna the calm voice of sanity and reason! This programme just keeps getting better with every new episode! Thank you.

Uninsulated Plasterboard installed on an External facing wall will cause damp. The Plasterboard will sweat as the internal room temperature is higher than the cold wall it faces onto. It was so nice to hear Philip’s laugh. I was laughing out loud with the banter and blurring out. Such a great video this week. I’m glad you are ok Anna, and Benoit too.
Glad you're okay, Anna! Lead paint is always nerve-wracking. In the US (at least where we live), if you don't disturb the paint (sanding, cutting, etc.), you can just paint over it. Otherwise we require remediation, similar to asbestos. But as our home is over 100 years old, anytime we drill into the wall, we always have to be super careful and clean up immediately. The best was when the house next door to us power washed all the old paint off, it went everywhere on our property amd contained lead. Sigh...
Glad you are okay Anna!💝💝 I would suggest to put the location niche on the wall sharing the shower and toilet room so you can see the beautiful tile/tile design you will do instead of product bottles. I would do one taller niche with 2 shelves one for Anna and her products and one for Phillip and his products. Be sure to remember to tilt the grade the bottom tile so the water runs out of the niche.
Je suis à nouveau très impressionnée par tout ce travail. Je ne suis pas capable d’ en faire autant, c’ est sûr, alors… Un grand bravo à vous 😊👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💐
ROFL y’all play so well off of each other like it was planned 😂. When I was redoing my bathroom I found shelves that could be put up with the tiles. They were all matching etc. no need to cut into the wall. Dunno if that would be an option…
What do you get in return for the niche, Philipp? Perhaps you've heard the little rhyme: "Happy wife, Happy life?" Yeah, THAT'S what you get. I'm sure you're aware that lead is most dangerous for children, so the kids should get tested, too. As someone who is almost superhuman, I'm sure Philipp is immune to its effects. And don't forget to bag up your scrapings & vacuum dust & dispose of it in a hazmat dump. I suspect virtually all of the paint that was in the chateau when you bought it contains lead. Painting over does seal it in, but as soon as you sand down to the old layers, there it is. Stay safe! Exciting to see the bathroom take shape!
Niche are not old fashion. Multi million dollar homes in California and Florida have niches in their homes and Anna is smart to put one in the shower. Fabulous idea to put one in.
Glad for you Anna, how about the rest of the family ? Maybe Benoît and Vincent should also get checked with all the work they do with you and elsewhere. Nice video 😂😂😂
The lead level required to cause problems in children is far far below what is considered a problem for adults. The max amount a child should have is 3.5 mcg/dL. If Anna has 33...well that is not desirable, but for the kids if they have anything approaching that it is an emergency because that is 10 times the level considered safe for children (though any doctor will tell you there is no safe level of lead for children). I'm a medical writer specializing in pediatrics.
Anna I hope you're okay! I'm glad you knew enough to test it before it had a chance to make everyone sick. I had a solid belly-laugh at the plasterboard fiasco! ah, I commented early in the video. glad to see Anna's blood work doesn't show lead poisoning ~
It's Distemper (paint), normally the white is just chalk, but it can be lead as it makes the white color pop more. It has been used a lot in the past, especially where it should be a little cheaper since it mostly consists of organic materials. It can be scrubbed off with a wet brush and hard work.
The color of that plasterboard in the master bathroom actually looks really pretty in there! Very calming and spa-like. As for the niche in the shower, you can put in rounded corner shelves when you tile; I have them in both showers in my bathrooms. They are molded to match the tile.
Von Schlüter gibt es fertige Nischen zum Einbau in die Dusche. Die Serie nennt sich Kerdi. Ist vielleicht sicherer als selbst was zurecht zu schneiden und am Ende ist es nicht wasserdicht.
Is it possible to put the niche on one of the sides so it’s not on the back wall? I put mine on the side and it means you don’t immediately focus on the niche when you enter the room. Just wondering 😊
Sorry to disagree, but 'crumbliness' is not a reliable indicator (or really any indicator) of lead in the paint. In ANY renovation of an old (or older) house, it is safest to assume that there is lead in the paint at least somewhere, and test everywhere you plan to disturb the paint. Similarly, it's safest to assume there will be asbestos at least somewhere (walls, roof and pipe insulation,, etc).
@@HowToRenovateAChateau Lead and asbestos are no joke. I have worked for 15 years in a renovation construction company and in our country there is a law that if the building was built before 1994, test samples must be taken before dismantling the material, e.g. for asbestos. If no samples are taken, the material must be removed by a professional asbestos removal company. In addition, for example, our company always uses HEPA air cleaners at renovation sites. Although the materials to be dismantled do not contain dangerous substances in the working space. This significantly reduces floating dust particles and facilitates post-cleaning and keeps tools and clothes clean.
I was going to suggest the use of greenboard in the whole bathroom, but I'm an American & I don't know your building codes.... Philip, take comfort in knowing you're not the only youtube channel that has made this error. At least you caught it before the plaster was applied, I can't say that for the others.🤭
I greatly admire your grandiose humility. Your humility would make a monk brush. Carry on and get thee to a monastery ASAP - they could use your shining example.
I have a question for Benoit or Vincent, or any French person that deals with a lot of wood and staining and such. What is the French version of wood conditioner for soft woods like pine and what not, you know the pre treatment before staining so that the stain doesn't look splotchy? I live in France and I have a few raw pine pieces I want to stain, but for the life of me I can't find an equivalent to like a Minwax wood conditioner here in France. I seen a lot of different pre-treatments to make wood "harder", to prevent insects from getting in the wood, wood oils and waxes, but nothing that's like a wood conditioner, I've compared ingredients, I'm so lost, lol, do French people not care about the stain being even or not, lol, I'm so confused?, are us North Americans just like perfectionists or something?
No, Phillip, lead poisoning has nothing to do with it. Benoit’s comments and laughter said it all. 😂🤣😂 I’m sure Vincent just shakes his head. Ana, you really shouldn’t leave Phillip unsupervised.
Honestly, you shouldn't be surprised about the lead. Working in any building like that you should always assume the worst and take all the necessary precautions.
Very happy to see others managing without a plaster board lifter - nothing like balancing a board on your head while your arms burn supporting another area with a broom while praying the board doesn't flex too much and snap. Bravo!
Vincent's advice about the shower niche is very good! I would add that you want to center the niche on a tile. I guess you won't be able to cut in the niche until you have the shower pan and floor tile in and have picked out the wall tile. If the wall between the toilet and shower were a little wider, you could put the niche there, which has the advantage that you don't see the soap and stuff as easily. Are you using the Schluter system for the shower and bathroom floor? (I thought the drain you unpacked and squirreled away looked like a Schluter drain.) If so, they sell a pre-formed shower niche that might make things easier for you. That said, it seems to be designed for use with their so-called Kerdi-board. My wife and I tiled our bathroom last March. The shower niche kept me up at night. That should make a good video.
Lead paint or lead-based paint is paint containing lead. Lead is added to paint to accelerate drying, increase durability, maintain a fresh appearance, and resist moisture that causes corrosion. It is one of the main health and environmental hazards associated with paint. Lead paint has been generally phased out of use due to the toxic nature of lead. Alternatives such as water-based, lead-free traffic paint are readily available. In some countries, lead continues to be added to paint intended for domestic use, whereas countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom have regulations prohibiting its use. However, lead paint may still be found in older properties painted prior to the introduction of such regulations. Although lead has been banned from household paints in the United States since 1978, it may still be found in road marking paint. Lead paint is hazardous. It can cause nervous system damage, stunted growth, kidney damage, and delayed development. It is associated with high violent crime rates. It is dangerous to children because it tastes sweet, therefore encouraging children to put lead chips and toys with lead dust in their mouths. Lead paint can cause reproductive problems, including a decrease in sperm concentration in men. Lead is also considered a likely carcinogen. High levels of exposure can be lethal. As of 30 December 2021, these are the places with confirmed lead paint laws according to the WHO Global Health Observatory Database: While France is included, to learn whether your country is also included, please go to Wikipedia: Lead Paint

I am very relieved that you’re okay, Anna
Square Space, you couldn't have a better spokesperson ... or a more humble one. ;)
So glad for you dear Anna. Keep taking care while creating your magical art. 💖
That was a very nice and funny episode. Keep making mistakes! 😉
Sigh...
Wildly entertaining as always, plus making progress with the rooms…it s all going to be fabulous like everything else you’ve achieved
Glad you are okay Anna!💝💝
I would suggest to put the location niche on the wall sharing the shower and toilet room so you can see the beautiful tile/tile design you will do instead of product bottles. I would do one taller niche with 2 shelves one for Anna and her products and one for Phillip and his products.
Be sure to remember to tilt the grade the bottom tile so the water runs out of the niche.
What about a shelf insread of a niche? Could you vacuum the ceiling with a hepa filter?
Je suis à nouveau très impressionnée par tout ce travail. Je ne suis pas capable d’ en faire autant, c’ est sûr, alors…
Un grand bravo à vous 😊👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💐
I'm glad you are fine, Anna! 😊
Can't wait to see it finished, it will be beautiful! You are so funny Phillip!
ROFL y’all play so well off of each other like it was planned 😂.
When I was redoing my bathroom I found shelves that could be put up with the tiles. They were all matching etc. no need to cut into the wall. Dunno if that would be an option…
What was going through Anna's head for those 22 seconds?! 😀
Belle Anna, contente que ta santé ne soit pas à risque. C'est une excellente nouvelle 😅. Toujours enthousiasmant de vous suivre ❤
Glad you are ok Anna!
She was doing the whole ceiling so if she is fine they also are
The lead level required to cause problems in children is far far below what is considered a problem for adults.
Great video, I smiled all the way through 😀 Thank you ❤
Have you ever seen the old American comedy team, 'The three Stooges'?
Very much enjoyed all the giggles. Also, niche height depends on how tall the bottles you use for your showers?
Love it! You all never fail to put a smile on my face! So much more than a renovation vlog.
Omg! It’s the Three Stooges installing plasterboard!
Glad to know you are okay...lead is certainly a worry in old buildings.
“World-famous influencer in the wastepipe sector” 😂😂😂😂😂
Philip you crack me up- good stuff.
The color of that plasterboard in the master bathroom actually looks really pretty in there! Very calming and spa-like. As for the niche in the shower, you can put in rounded corner shelves when you tile; I have them in both showers in my bathrooms. They are molded to match the tile.
Is it possible to put the niche on one of the sides so it’s not on the back wall? I put mine on the side and it means you don’t immediately focus on the niche when you enter the room. Just wondering 😊
I simply love the connection between you all 😂❤
Vincent looks bemused by you two gentlemen
💕Instead of a niche WHY DON’T YOU buy a triple shampoo conditioner & shower gel dispenser💕
By the way: have you tested the water?
In the past lead pipes were used for ware supply as well.
They used to be lead, all of them. We changed them all.
Great progress!!! 🥰❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦
You're right!
I've been witness to so many bad things in this video....can you blur me out....LOL..😂😂
Bravo!
Every shower needs a niche for putting the soap/gel/shampoo. What else do you do?
You always manage to get me in a mood so I continuously chuckle…..so refreshing…thank you ever so much….I am still smiling!!!! 👍🥰
Very entertaining. Keep up the great work 😂
Niches are over rated. They hold water, they get mildew and eventually leak. You are better off too put in a nice rack system that is for showers.
LMFAO Vincent is like the older sibling having to come and save the 2 trouble makers hahahaha This video was so funny for some reason~ particularly Phillip, Benoir and Vincent taking turns asking to be blurred out, Phillip comitting a very Phillip move (drilling 3 holes) and Benoir laughing under his breath then Benoir almost dying cuz he cut a wire a;lsdkf LMFAO. I'm glad everyone is safe including Anna!
Niche needs to go where the shower doesn’t hit it the most.
