Hiking is no joke especially if you are a beginner tryin to take a long difficult path . Three years ago a young mom and her daughter stumbled upon me and my wife while hiking eaton canyon here in SoCal . Poor mom was crying literally and telling her daughter if they die it was a nice adventure . Right when she said that they practically bumped into us . We were hiking to a place called bridge to nowhere around 10-11 miles or 7 hour hike . This was around 2:30pm . They were out of food water , and not sure how they survived the cold temps at night . We had to go back , and stay the night with them as they had no strength left to hike all the way back through . I’m glad medical staff was able to help out once we got back . Till this day they mom and daughter keep in touch with us .

@@BenMcmillen On the snow shoe trip, I lost the trail and the sun set before I could find my way back. I spent a cold night in the woods, and found my way out in the morning using my map and compass. On Cherry Point the trail was poorly marked and really overgrown. I followed some cairns that took me the wrong way. I got out the map and compass, and found my way back to the trail and finished the hike in the dark.

Two men, calm and happy to be hiking, plus they have all the right equipment, are off on an over 15 mile hike in October! The sun sets by about 6:00. If you want to see the hikers who walked into their camp at night, Push the video ahead to about the 14:52 time stamp. The hikers appear right after the men see the two deer, and right after Ben McMillen ( with his cute little boy boy in the background) talks about what is going to happen next. The two lost hikers are desperately searching for their way in the dark without a flashlight. Crazy! The two women do not know of the dangers of the wilderness. If they had not found Ben and his buddy, Preston probably would have panicked in the dark night without a tent, no food, no blankets. Ben and Preston saved their lives! Good job, Ben and Preston. Always have a partner out in the woods. Never split up. Stay together, always and you'll be safe. Keep up the good work!

Those ladies were so lucky to have stumbled upon your camp. Especially with how ill-equipped they were. I do a lot of day hikes, no backpacking camping type stuff just yet, except when I go deer hunting. But even on day hikes I take a minimum of survival gear. Water or way of collecting water, food for at least the day, flashlight/headtorch, at least an emergency space blanket or even a wool blanket, and something to start fire with like matches, knife and firesteel. Fire is a big moral booster out in cole and dark especially if you have no shelter or warm clothing with you. Also I always let someone know where I'm going and when I'll be back, so they where to look for me if I go missing.

What good fortune the ladies stumbled into your campsite! And Preston, you make jokes about your hiking but I think you did well. And you didn’t let a flooded tent or all the aches & pains of a first backpacking trip stop you from going backpacking. If you want to compare yourself to someone, compare yourself now to the man you were before. I don’t hike much. I get lost in large bathrooms. When the group I camp with decides to go for a hike I stay in camp or the trailhead with everyone’s dogs. I get some reading in and the dogs sleep or take another dog’s toy. And we make sure the after hike adult beverages are ready. (Truth is, the dogs are more likely to try consume someone’s brew. I’ve told them taking walks around the campground and peeing on a tree might get them a puppy treat and a bowl of water. Ice cold beer, sorry, no.)

also love the raw-ness of the footage, you guys are in the thick of it, huffing and hanging in there. Looking forward to more videos. Glad to stumble upon your channel. :) new sub!
edit: also, love how patient and happy you are in the beginning to have a (looks-like) maybe 4 year old crawling around and bouncing off your back. as a mother of a wild-spirit toddler boy, i can say sometimes it's hard to have that smile while you are a personal jungle gym. thanks for that:)

I bet they used the zpacks tent! It would have been really cramped for both you guys in the zpacks!
I’ve never been lost on trail but me and a friend miss timed a backcountry trip in Yellowstone heart lake. It got dark on us. We had our headlamps and we were making sure to stay on trail because there were thermal features in the area! We finally found a ranger cabin with a ranger there on duty. He had us sit for about 45 minutes or so in the cabin. Then he said we could stay in our tents at the cabin for the night. We did so than continued our multi day hike!
