Man. I just started painting about a month ago. You make putting the shade where you want it to go look so easy! Great video thanks for the advice!
I gotta say, I stumbled upon these videos about a week ago. Phenomenal work! I recently got into customizing 6in scale Marvel Legends figures and these shading tutorial is fantastic. May apply this on a future piece. Thanks for your time that you have put into these videos.
A brilliant video tutorial once again thanks Kris. You've got a great voice too that's very easy to listen to and a sort of relaxing way of talking too.
Funny that while listening to this, I had a thought that you some-what sounded like Pen Jilette of Pen & Teller. Then at end of video ... WTF! You like him too!
Your video continually help me expand my knowledge about painting and improve my skills. They are absolutely invaluable to me as someone who's getting into 40K for the 1st time
I am new to Hordes and I LOVE painting them. I am sooo glad I watched this video! Thank you!
Wow! I didn't realise that you could do so much with just shades/washes!
Wow, that was a real eye-opener! I'm guilty of "slapping it all over" ... but can now see that with more control, time & effort, those shades do really work!
Excellent vid and thanks for that, we all appreciate you showing us amateurs these steps to improve our models! ... Paint ON!!!
I would love a video on painting with metallics. Especially things like chain-mail and large helmets. Golds would also be really helpful!
It would be nice if you showed the completed model at the end of the video!

I think that's one of the purposes of the GW technical "paint" Lhamian Medium. It's not just for thinning paints, it can be used for reducing the glossy effect sometimes created by washes or "Inks. "
That font you used for the paint at the very beginning IS TOTALLY THE FONT FROM STAR WARS SHADOWS OF THE EMPIRE!!! I.LOVE.THAT.COMIC!!!
That was really useful thanks, ill certainly be keeping my eyes open for more of these.
This is great!
I haven't actually really tried these techniques using the GW washes. I think that I will after watching this! It comes out looking fantastic.
Great job Kris!
Thanks for this. I used it to shade my red Mandolorian Firespray and it came out great
Great video. I was learning how to wash and now I know how. Thanks for your help.
Enjoying your Quick Tip series
Kris, you are a good person.
I've been watching your turt and I always wanted to know what you are using for your pallete. It looks like a clear plastic film, but I can't seen to locate it. Also, I just completed a Star Wars At-St and my wash of blue gray was horrible. I had to strip the model and repaint. I used glaze meduim with a little paint. It turned my model white. ?????? Thanks again for the vids. I do enjoy learning from them.
Oh man, that was a brilliant tip! Thanks for sharing. I love the idea of using the druchi violet shade to create the gradual shade effect. Would you be able to provide which shades are complimentary to base colors?
What is the advantage to using specifically mixed shades like these as opposed to just thinning a darker color? Is it just convenience and predictability?
Josh Foreman I also would like to know this answer. Is it easy to customize shades and duplicate results using a medium and whatever paint you have on hand?
Also, I'd like to know the "outer limits" of where to go with contrasting colors using these washes. The violet looked great on the red. Is there a way to use a color wheel for this? Would a related secondary always look ok on a primary? Related tertiary on secondary, etc? Or, is it something one must just feel out to learn?
Thanks for the great videos!
Excellent video. Thanks!
Thanks a lot for these great videos.
I would love it if you could show how to do frosted effects! I just cannot get it realistic looking.
Thanks for the tip. Great video.
Would really appreciate something about blending. Thanks Kris :)
What is a quick and easy way to cover medium/large flat surfaces without an airbrush, while keeping the layer smooth?
A great way to get rid of those lines of demarkation on the latter part (his "eardrum") is to thin the inks with glazing medium. Granted, this will take more time, but if you have a hairdryer, it will even out.
love to see how to use spray paint correctly.
Hey Kris! I have alot of trouble with doing realistic camoflauge patterns could ya help a guy out? Thanks for all the great videos!
Maybe you could do a vid on metal that's been scratched to reveal the clean silver below the colour like the edging or speed kult orks armour :)
What you are using is an ink not paint? Thanks great video
Process-wise, what do you do about the unpainted underside?
Do you have some Hobbit miniatures? Would be nice to see some tricks and tips how to paint them. cheers
Comgrats.very useful video, i have a little problem with citadel wash.. when i apply the wash material at the spot then the wash is not drying.. and it stay like wet- glow.. what i m doing wrong;

Great Tip. Thanks
Excellent, thank you :)
What type of base is the one you are painting on? I've been trying to figure out this brand, but I can't nail it down.
Warmachine
totally helpful.
am I the only one who thinks quick tip week is to get people to try the vault and to have content while they edit the apocalypticon videos?
The round bit on the side of the skull is called the temporal fenestra. I'm sure you we anxious to know... :P
is it always better to prime everything black?
whats the difference between bought washes vs thinning down paint washes ?
iHelloway some bought washes are ink based. Also they are made to a specific tone so you don't have to mix.
i love using washes and shades, but it really annoys me how it kinda leaves a glossy texture when it drys ;\
Kris how do you make armour have that glowing look like the dark eldar?
Dry brushing or blending 2 colors. Like on a mymeara dire avenger
Hello Where can you by this paint? For it looks like a good paint for my figures.
It is citadel paint, you can buy it at a Games Workshop or their site
What would you use for bloodletters?
Carroburg crimson. Soak that thing in it so the colour becomes super dark. Then, drybrush with kindleflame on all the warts 'n stuff, then wash it with the bloodletter glaze.
Hi, what brush are you using in this tutorial?
I would never use a wash on a large oval surface like that. Just use paint and darken it to create the gradients. The wash will wash away previous layers and cause headaches.
tips on speed/batch painting
he has sucha epic voice, like almost the same sorta sounding as Optimus prime lol :P
Whats that medium?
Thank you, from the cheap seats!
Do GW sell a wash for space marines?

what is this cool and interesting miniature?
Kris sounds like a Sensei.
Her Teri could you make a video of putting together and painting a Bushido model?
Those guys are fiddly and metal....could do with some tips!
The lightness or darkness of a color is called its value. You can find the values of a color by making its tints and shades. Tints are light values that are made by mixing a color with white. For example, pink is a tint of red, and light blue is a tint of blue. So you cannot tint a color with a darker color, when are people going to learn this? I mean if you're going to "teach" people something, teach them with the right terminology. But good video though.
